FROM THE BENCHUnderage Alcohol

Consumptionis Illegal

By Judge Bill Steuk,Huron Municipal court

High school graduations are occurring within the next few weeks. Many of our local youths will be celebrating by hav-ing graduation parties. This is a good time to remind them that they must be responsible for their actions. This includes keeping alcohol out of their ex-periences. Consuming alcohol while underage is illegal, and violators could face a mis-demeanor of the first degree criminal charge. More-over, anyone purchasing alcohol as a minor, sharing in its cost, or using a false identification for a purchase can be chargd—also with a misdemeanor of the first degree violation.

It is illegal for adults to purchase for or provide alcohol to minors. This includes parents who might consider hosting a graduation party. Parents should be aware that individuals cannot give alcohol to another person’s child who is under the age of twenty-one (21) even in their own home and even with the other parent’s per-mission. The law further prohibits a person to know-ingly permit minors, other than their own children, to consume alcohol in their home. Violators also can face a first degree misdemeanor criminal charge. Please be safe and obey the law.

Articles appearing in this column are intended to pro-vide broad, general information about the law. Before applying this information to a specific legal problem, readers are urged to seek advice from an attorney.

Dr. Lata Stefano is offering free dental services for people of all ages on Friday, June 3, 2011, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lata Stefano, DDS, Inc. at 1617 W. Bogart Rd., Suite 1, Sandusky, Ohio. Dr. Stefano will be offering free cleanings, dental examinations, x-rays and fluoride treatments on June 3. Call 419.626.2205 for more information. Appointments are not accepted, walk-ins only are first come, first served.

This is Dr. Stefano’s third free dental event, in which she treats patients of all ages in need of dental services. The event promises to meet a great demand in the community, bringing improved dental hygiene to those in need.

“People are still in need of good preventative dental work, even in trying economic times, which is why we are so excited to offer this free day of dentistry to the public. It’s a way to give back to the community and help those who need it most,” said Lata Stefano, DDS, of Lata Stefano, DDS, Inc. in Sandusky, Ohio.

With costs higher than ever, the population of under-in-sured Americans continues to grow. Over 100 million Ameri-cans lack dental insurance and over 29 percent of adults have untreated cavities. Without events like like Dentistry from our Hearts, dental care simply is not an option for many of the uninsured.

“Absolutely love my new home. Everything about my experience with The Sanctuary at Plum Brook was, and still is, amazing. Af-ter going through some of the model homes, my wife and I were so excited to call it home. We still had to sell our house at that point, but the great team at The Sanctuary at Plum Brook got us hooked up with an awesome local realtor who was able to sell our house and get us moved into our new home in no time. They walked us through every step of the way and made sure we un-derstood what was going on at all times. We love our neighbors, love our community, and love the decision we made to move to The Sanctuary at Plum Brook.” ~ Golf Lover ‘55 - Feb. 3, 2011

The key to the company’s success was repeating a formula that worked time and time again in dozens of markets across the country: build the attached homes, four to a building, using quality materials and offering upscale amenities but few options. But as times changed, Epcon’s owners knew it was time to change, too. Epcon worked with noted industry researcher Margaret Wylde of ProMutura Group, who asked customers what kind of homes they wanted—from size, to features, to price ranges. As the trend of outdoor living space began to gain favor, demand for livable spaces outside of the home’s four walls soared. “We provided patios, but people began to tell us that they really would love to have private outdoor space for everyday living,” Ed Bacome, president of Epson said. “As important as that is, we’re in Ohio, and you’ve got the four seasons. Could we really create space that is special during all 12 months of the year?” Epcon and its designers started from scratch.

They imagined a new style of home with courtyards that not only were an enjoyable place to be in nice weath-er but could be positioned to bring the outdoors inside no matter the season. The result for Epcon’s Classic Courtyard Collec-tion, which has been warmly received by custom-ers. The line of eight condos realizes the compa-ny’s new vision by making the patios visible from large windows in the great room, kitchen, dining area and owner’s suite. The outside living space is integrated into the company’s four single-story, attached homes, which range from 1,137 - 1,806 square feet. The courtyards are a feature of all four of Epcon’s single family models, sized from 1,516 - 2,628 sq. feet.

One area high school sophomore has been selected to attend the Ohio West Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar. He/she will join more than 200 young leaders representing as many high schools from throughout northwestern Ohio. The seminar will be held June 9-12 in Ada, Ohio at Ohio Northern University.

Selected to attend HOBY is: Jake Justus,

Huron High School. Students are chosen based upon demonstrated leadership and potential for continued leadership growth.

HOBY Leadership Seminars bring to-gether a select group of high school sopho-mores with groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, education, and other professions to discuss present and future issues. The goal is to provide the

youth with a stimulating forum for learn-ing about critical issues while broadening their understanding of their leadership potential and quest for self-development.

Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership was established in 1958 by the popular actor, Hugh O’Brian, following a visit to Africa, where he was inspired by a meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer.

“One of the things Schweitzer said to me was that the most important thing in edu-cation was to teach young people to think for themselves,” O’Brian said. “From that inspiration, and with the support of oth-ers who believe in youth and the American dream, I started HOBY to seek out, recog-nize, and develop outstanding leadership potential among our nation’s youth.”
