BROWN BURYING GROUND

Another early burial ground, which today is abandoned, was located on Exchange Road (at corner of Prospect Road), in Sect. 2, Lot 40, on the east side of the road. On Aug. 6, 1837, Collins Brown deeded to the School Directors of School District #6, in consideration of $1.00, a rectangular parcel of land, "beginning at the southwest corner of William Johnson's land (he was in Hartland Twp.) and south 10 rods, east 8 rods •.. containing onehalf acre of land. The above named ground has been deeded for the use of the inhabitants of the said District for a publ ic burying ground." This deed was witnessed by B. Barnum.

L i tt le is known about who was buri ed in this cemetery. Some who remember it, have said that perhaps there were 25 burials there, but no one knows for sure, and there are no records. The only record of this cemetery was found in an old Township Trustee book by Richard "Dick" Smith, when he was Trustee a few years ago (1970's).

On Nov. 7, 1905, the Trustees "decided to move headstones from burial graves in this burying ground, on the then Bigelow Farm." This was signed by P. L. Smith, Clerk; H. Griffin, W. W. Martin and S. B. Palmer, Trustees.

The only other item which might shed some light on this was an entry on Dec. 4, 1905, when they paid four items for cemetery expenses, viz.: "$1.70, $6.20, and $48.52 to various people and finally $179.40 to J. Kinnes Bigelow. The amount of this last item might suggest that Bigelow moved the stones to Fitchville, and it was his farm.

Older residents have said that at one time, stones were piled up around the small townsh i p bui ldi ng at the cemetery, but these stones were never reset in the Fitchville Cemetery. Dick Smith did exhaustive researching of the cemetery records and also of the stones in the cemetery, and he could find nothing to indicate additional stones had been added anywhere.

Sometime in 1905, the State passed a law which would not allow just the headstones to be moved, and we now believe that these stones which had already been moved to Fitchville Cemetery were just abandoned. It is possible that some of these stones were used in building a wall in the basement of the house owned by Herman Ritchey, just across the road from the cemetery. Some stones with inscriptions on them have been seen in the basement of this house. At least two stones there might not be from this cemetery.

Adoph Schneiter later owned the Brown Burying Ground property and turned the corner with the cemetery into farm land.

CRABBS CEMETERY

Crabbs Cemetery was located in Lot 1, Sect. 4, TWp. 2, Range 21, Fitchville Twp, on the property of Abraham Crabbs (1896 map). A descendant, Sterling Crabbs, in a letter to Paula Porter Griffin, dated Oct. 9, 1981, stated: "I said I had never heard of a schoolhouse on the Crabbs

Farm, but Dad said he was 16 years old when they came there and a family cemetery was there - or the remnants of 12 or 15 markers. There are pear trees there now." [no stones found today]

FORKS OF THE ROAD CEMETERY

The Forks of the Road Cemetery was located in the northeast quarter of Sect. 4, Twp. 2, Range 21, Fitchville Twp., in the north point of US 250 and Fitchville River Road. The stones were removed to Fitchville Cemetery.

Paula Porter Griffin, in her book "Carved Out of the Wilderness: The History of Fitchville Township, Huron County, Ohio 1817-1987," p. 112, says: "Before the present cemetery was set apart for use, a number of burials were made in a little enclosure behind the log school house which stood on the point of land between the Wooster-Norwalk and Fitchville River roads on the site where later Union White erected the first store in Cl inton. Abram Mead's first wife, Deborah, who died July 23, 1823, was the first burial there. She and her daughter, Mary, both died in 1823, and in November of the same year, Rundle Palmer's son, Marcus, who was lost and perished in the woods, was buried there. When the village had started to grow, the remains interred here were removed to the larger cemetery then established. [now site of Fitchville Market]

PICKARD CEMETERY

Pickard Cemetery is located in Lot 9, Sect. 2, TWp. -2, Range 21, Fitchville Twp., on the south side of Fayette Road, just west of Exchange Road on the A.E. Ganz farm. Many of the stones were taken from the river, are reddish in color, almost rusty looking, and crudely lettered with the name and date. This transcription was made July 20, 1967 by the late Paula Porter Griffin, Fitchville, Ohio.

WARD CEMETERY

The Ward Cemetery is located in the NE 1/4, Sect. 3, Twp. 2, Range 21, Fitchville Twp., on the Archie Case farm, on the west side of Rt. 250, three miles north of Fitchville. This transcription was made by lona Knight Robbins in 1965. The location of the burials is not known, because all markers have been relocated in two long rows of concrete.

FITCHVILLE CEMETERY

Fitchville Cemetery is located on the east side of US 250 at the north edge of Fitchville in the NE 1/4 Sect. 4, TWp. 2, Range 21, Fitchville Twp. The stones were copied by the late Paula Porter Griffin, her husband Kenneth Griffin, nephew and niece Chad and Shelly Porter, and Tom NeeL There are six major sections, with the first burial being Alva Palmer, a War of 1812 veteran, who died 27 May 1827. Gravestones were copied by lot number, and lots run south to north in a row, then reverse order north to south, south to north, etc. Mrs. Griffin incorporated several addition sources to make this record as complete as possible, including: "Early Fitchville Cemetery Records," by Charles D. Miles, 1884; Fitchville Cemetery Record Book 1947-1974 by Fred Goldsmi th; Cemetery Lot & Interment Records - 3 volumes; Soldiers Grave Registration Cards, WPA; and some death records, obituaries, and even interviews with relatives of the deceased. This transcription was made about 1981, and more recent burials are therefore not included. Lot owners are included after the Lot number.
