Fluorochemical Industry Conversion from C8 to C6 Chemistry
• Many water and oil repellent products used
for long term protection of textiles are
based on C8 telomers.
• In manufacturing a trace amount of PFOA
can be generated as an unintended
byproduct in C8-based repellent materials.
• PFOA is an abbreviation for
Perfluorooctanoic Acid.
• C8-telomer is a chemical compound that
contains 8 carbon atoms and 17 fluorine
atoms.

PFOA Stewardship Program 2010/15
Launch of the EPA 2010/15 PFOA Stewardship Program in early 2006, to
reduce human and environmental exposure:
1st step: Achieve no later than 2010 a 95% reduction, measured from a year 2000 baseline, of PFOA, PFOA precursers and higher homologues in emissions and products.
2nd step: Elimination of PFOA, PFOA precursers and related higher homologue chemicals from emissions and products no later than 2015.
DuPont amongst seven other global major fluoropolymer and fluorotelomer producer voluntarily agreed to participate in this program.

CorporateGBOTCPS-2016 32
Reduction in Formaldehyde release
Future Challenges
• Formaldehyde classified as carcinogen class 2
• Formaldehyde is expected to be added to the SVHC
list
• SVHC also triggers the ban of the substance by brand
and retailers
Advantages in Pyrovatex CP-LF
• Very effective, inventive FR product also based on P/N
chemistry
• ~ 80% reduction in formaldehyde smell during the
application
hardly no emission of formaldehyde into the working
• Possibility of combination with other finishing agents
• Target is to come out with total formaldehyde free flame
