“We came across the Miller’s House by chance, We were biking along Thicket Road

one day and noticed what appeared to be a run-

down and uninhabited looking old house; there

was no ‘for sale’ sign at the time, so we thought

little more of it. However, several months later,

we spotted an advertisement for an open day at

the house in a property magazine. We decided

to attend and were taken aback by the sheer

size and character of the house; we saw that

it had the potential to be restored to provide a

wonderful family home, and we finally purchased

the property in August 1993.”

insight “Tragically, the property suffered a fire in 1994 and extensive reconstruction was needed to restore many of the original features,” explain the Darnells. “However, it

also gave us the opportunity to incorporate our own ideas. The

ground floor living accommodation now comprises three reception

rooms plus an orangery and a large conservatory, as well as a

breakfast kitchen with an adjoining utility room. The kitchen leads

out into a courtyard, which for us is one of the nicest parts of the

garden, where we enjoy afternoon tea and bask in the sun. The

garden has also been the venue for many barbecues and rounders’

matches, while in 2008, we hosted our daughter’s wedding

reception in a large marquee on the lawn.”

“The village of Houghton has good amenities and an excellent primary school, while transport is provided

to all senior schools including the private school Kimbolton,”

continue the Darnells. “Houghton is a good base for walking and

biking, including to the neighbouring towns of Huntingdon and

St Ives; Huntingdon station has commuter services into London

Kings Cross. The village also has easy access to Cambridge and

Peterborough. Houghton is an active community with a tennis club

and a cricket club, while highlights of the year include the summer

Feast Week and the free Christmas Lights night when there are

carols, a fair, food and a visit from Santa.”

“Houghton has the added attraction of the National Trust’s Houghton Mill, which is a lovely water mill spanning the River Ouse. One

of the millers, Potto Brown, is commemorated by a statue on the village square; he was well regarded as a philanthropist, who amongst other things

established schools in Houghton and Wyton, St Ives and elsewhere. Potto Brown lived in the Miller’s House, so this house has some significance in the

history of the village. We will miss every part of the house – it has been a truly amazing family home,” conclude the Darnell family.
