Relay For Life 2012 Rocks New
Tampa with $115,000 Raised On May 18th & May 19th New Tampa Relay For Life held their annual fundraising event at Wharton High School. It was an exciting evening as New Tampa showed their community support and exceeded their goal raising over $115,000 with 49 Teams and 620 Participants. Pride Elementary was the Top Fundraising Team with over $9,300 raised. Opening ceremony began at 6 pm as Sharon Gates, Event Chair, stated,
"While each of us has a unique reason for being here, we all have something very much in common – We want to make a difference in the fight against cancer”.Bill Holster, Team Development Chair, said, “New Tampa, because of your support of Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society is able to saves lives by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back." After the Opening Ceremony the Cancer survivors walked the first lap with caregivers following in the second lap. All the teams joined in on the third lap symbolizing, "We support you and we are behind you." The survivors and caregivers
were then celebrated with a dinner provided by Olive Garden and dessert from Baker's Gallery. The track was lined with luminarias as the ceremony began.“Our track is illuminated by luminarias. They represent people, and each has a name and a story to tell. They are our mothers, our fathers, our sisters, our brothers, our sons, our daughters, our friends, and our loved ones. As they glow through the night, they represent our shared vision for a cancer-free future.” It was a fun filled night with Carmen Malouf, Activities Chair, leading the entertainment which included Brittany Brown, Danielle Johnson, The Roger Barnes Band and DJ Glen Rand. There were Pilates, Zumba, theme laps and games
throughout the night. At the closing ceremony the following morning, Sharon Gates, Event Chair stated, "What a wonderful night. We celebrated our survivors & caregivers, We honored and remembered our loved ones with an amazing luminaria ceremony; and we will forever claim our theme of "Journey To The Cure – Don’t Stop Believing." New Tampa Teen Represents Florida at National “Geo-Bee”
Maya Patel, an 8th grader had the proud honor of representing Tampa, and the state of Florida at the National Geographic Bee held in Washington D.C. on May 22nd. The National Geographic Bee is a nationwide contest in which over 4 million students participate. The students have to be well-versed in a variety of subjects in addition to being experts on maps. For example, students were asked “In January 2012, experts announced that a new island had formed as a result of underwater volcanic activity. This new island is located in the Red Sea west of what country that borders Saudi Arabia?” The correct answer, in case you didn’t know, is Yemen. Maya’s journey to Washington started several months ago, when her school administered the school bee in November 2011. Every student in 6th, 7th and 8th grade took part in it, which comes out to over 1,100 students. After several rounds of elimination, Maya became the school champion. Next, she took a written test, which had 70 questions, and she competed against the school bee winner of every school in Florida that chose to participate. From around 900 schools that took part, only 100 are invited to Jacksonville to compete in the state bee. In Jacksonville, after several hours of intense questioning, Maya was crowned the State bee winner. At this time, she received a trophy, a $100 Gift certificate and many other prizes. She also won a free all expense trip to Washington
D.C. for her and her teacher, as well as two plane tickets for her parents. Six weeks later, it was time to go to Washington D.C. Maya has spent many years studying for this contest and dreaming of coming to the Nationals. There were 54 students invited to the National. After the first round of questioning, Maya had only missed one, so she had an 8 out of 9. Then she moved to next round, which was even more difficult. The rounds continued until they had the top 10 students, Maya finished at 13. She was a bit sad about that, but certainly still very thrilled to be representing Liberty Middle School at our nation’s capital. The rest of the trip was very exciting, a lot of siteseeing and the highlight was a chance to meet Alex
Trebek, who was the moderator for the final rounds, which were shown on National TV. The experience was enhanced by the fact that she was escorted to Washington DC by one of her favorite teachers, Ms. Questell. Her other favorite, Mr. Meshbesher was not able to attend. What a way to end her 3 years at Liberty! v

Local Business Owner Attends Business Forward Council
at the White Houseby Patricia Cardona
I feel so lucky that I was one of the attendees at Business Council and Business Forward Florida Nature Coast Business Leaders' Briefing at the White House. As a small business owner, it was a great, unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience! This gave me the opportunity to network with several business owners from Tampa, as well as White House officials. Included
in such an insightful group was the City of Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, the President of the Pasco Hernando Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Rocio Paulsen and the President elect Elena McCullough. During the briefing at the Eisenhower Executive office building I learned very interesting things about the new health care laws, health insurance, taxes and much more. For example, I learned that If you have up to 25 employees, pay average annual wages below $50,000, and provide health insurance, you may qualify for a small business tax credit of up to 35% (up to 25% for non-profits) to offset the cost of your insurance. This will bring down
the cost of providing insurance. Also I learned that the new health care law forces insurance companies to play by the rules, prohibiting them from dropping your coverage if you get sick, billing you into bankruptcy because of an annual or lifetime limit or discriminating against anyone with a pre-existing condition. SelectUSA was also a theme of discussion at the briefing. It is a government-wide initiative to encourage, facilitate, and accelerate business investment in the United States by both domestic and foreign firms to create jobs, spur economic growth, and promote American competitiveness. Also discussed was the ‘Startup America’ program which is the White House initiative to celebrate, inspire, and accelerate high-growth entrepreneurship throughout the nation. Some of the Administration participants at the briefing were:· Steve Olson, Executive Director, Select USA, U.S. Department of Commerce- · Sol Ross, Director of Business Outreach, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services- · Portia Wu, Special Assistant to the President and Workforce Policy, White House Domestic Policy Council- · Ali Zaidi, Policy Advisor, White House
Domestic Policy Council- · Chris Vein, Deputy Chief Technology Officer of Government Innovation, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy- · Jon Carson, Director, White House Office of Public Engagement- In a nutshell it was a great experience were we all had the opportunity to participate in an open dialogue with government officials. During the event we had the opportunity to share proposals and ideas, I think it is amazing that the current administration is focusing on helping small business owners grow through new mechanisms and incentives, and takes the time to listen to us. At the core of Business Forward's activities are a series of roundtables and briefings taking place around the country and in Washington, DC. In the first half of 2012, more than 2000 local business leaders from 500 cities have traveled to the White House to brief the President's economic advisers. Business Forward also supports programming in 45 cities across more than 30 states. Girl Scouts of West Central Florida Girl Scout Gold Awards
Reception Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) celebrated the 45 Girl Scouts who received their Girl Scout Gold Awards – the highest award in Girl Scouting – at a reception held in their honor on June 9th at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa.
Cub Scouts from Pack 801, which meets at Hunter’s Green Elementary School during the school year, are enjoying a fun and activity-filled summer, including launching rockets, tubing down the Rainbow River, and geocaching – an outdoor “treasure
hunt” where our Scouts will search for a hidden geocache using GPS technology. Grade-specific dens are also planning fun activities that will help the boys earn Scout achievements too. For example, Webelos Scouts will visit the Crystal Springs Nature Preserve in Zephyrhills to complete a
conservation project that will help them earn their World Conservation Badge. Webelos are boys entering fourth and fifth grade in the fall who are transitioning from Cub Scouts (elementary-aged Scouts) to Boy Scouts (middle and high school ages). While at Crystal Springs, the boys will pull invasive plants from the Hillsborough River under the supervision of the nature preserve staff. They will also learn about our local water system, wildlife, and ecosystems. Learn more about Cub Scout Pack 801 on its website at http://TampaPack801.com or contact John Forman at [email protected] or 813-758-4398. v

This year’s Girl Scout Gold Award recipients completed projects focused on a variety of community issues that will have a lasting impact, including bringing awareness to the plight in Northern Uganda, creating memory books for foster kids, raising awareness about pet obesity and texting while driving, developing reading programs for younger children, and planting 5,000 salt marsh plugs, just to name a few. v

SUMMER CAMP AT THE NEW TAMPA YMCA
Summer camps at the Y focus on nurturing the potential of children and helping them grow in spirit, mind and body. We encourage fun and friendship and provide the opportunity for young people to build self-esteem, develop interpersonal skills and make
lasting memories. Y Summer camp also provides kids with the things they need to succeed in school by providing engaging, hands-on, education based activities that help kids avoid summer learning loss. Spots are still available for weeks with fun themes like Mad Science, Wacky Olympics and Under the Sea, as well as field trips to a Rays game and Lowry Park Zoo. Full and half day camps are available for kids
ages 5 to 17. Sign up today at www.tampaymca.org or come in and sign up at the New Tampa YMCA.
SWIM-A-THON SUCCESS Did you know that Hillsborough County is the nation's leader in drownings of children ages 1-4? Members and staff at the New Tampa Y want to change this statistic. They hosted a swim-a-thon on Thursday, May 24th. Despite inclement weather cutting the swim time short, 26 people swam laps and raised over $3,600 to help provide scholarships so children in our community will have access to swim lessons. You can sign up your child TODAY at www.tampaymca.org or call 813-866-9622. Classes are available during the day and evening for all ages.
