Proud Member of the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce

There is a small section of Tampa called, New Tampa.

And within this small section is Hunter's Green. Even though it is not a huge community, there is a lot going on with huge hearts giving to their community and to their neighbors. On the cover you saw how much candy the Hunter's Green elementary school children collected for the troops. They should get it by Christmas. Inside you will find information about Halo Academy's Jingle Bell 5k fun run; held in Hunter's Green, how the Rotary Club helped at Joshua House, what the New Tampa Women's Club is doing to help local families during Christmas, and so many more people, all helping others. Not just during the holidays, but year round. And

though it is not in Hunter's Green, this next mentioned article effects us all. Read the article on page 15 about Stars for Troops. Make a difference to those who protect our neighborhood, city, country. For the little Hunter's Green residents we have the coloring contest. Inside is a full page that children can color (best to use markers) and mail in. We will pick one winner who will win a $25 gift card to Toys R Us on December 20th. In January, we will display some of the runners up as well. The happiest of holidays to all and Merry Christmas! Cindi MatterPublisher

Wrapping Up the Perfect GiftWhat do you get for the person who has everything? That is always such a hard question during the HG

holiday season. You may think to yourself...my loved one has golf clubs, they have a tennis racket, etc. etc. But, do they have the perfect place to enjoy those past-times? Why not this year, give the gift of membership! Hunter’s Green Country Club is the perfect place for you and your family to enjoy all the things you love most and especially time together as a family! What a great gift to give each other – a place to gather together, enjoy the activities you like the most, make new friends and capture memories to last a lifetime. Call us today at 813.973.1000 regarding our different levels of membership – there truly is something for everyone. So, now you have one more gift to check off your list...the perfect gift...the gift of membership!

1. How's your lie? From deep grass, sometimes all you can do is try to wedge the ball anywhere on the green. If you're in the fairway, you have options. A wedge might still be best, but often you don't need all that loft. Whenever you can, play a running shot, down to a fairway-metal chip. And if the ground is dry and smooth, putt it. 2. How much green do you have? On chips and pitches, land the ball on the green, because the bounce will be more predictable. If you have a lot of green to work with, take a less-lofted club and run it. The low shot is safer because you use a shorter swing, but make

sure you don't inadvertently bring trouble into play -- like deep rough or water over the green.

3. How will the ball bounce? Look at two factors: the firmness of the green and any slopes. If the green is hard, a big bounce might make a wedge play like an 8-iron. The opposite might be true on a spongy green. Same thinking applies to landing the ball on an upslope or a downslope, where it can either die or take off. Try to picture that first bounce, and figure it into your club selection.

Look forward to seeing you at the club!

Tennis Tip by Allegra CamposTips for a better serve:1. If your serve does not carry wide of the doubles sideline on the deuce side after hitting the singles sideline, you are not getting enough side spin. Hit the ball at the 3 o'clock mark and then turn your forearm sharply through the hit. Now you should be able to move your opponent way off the court.

2. Many players serve well until the score becomes critical and then they fall apart. They get so jittery that their usual reliable serve loses all directional control. To prevent this from happening to you, clear your mind. Stop thinking of the point, but focus all the attention only on centering the desired serve.

NEw TAMPA JUNIOR wOMAN'S CLUB

The Special Santa program was created to give families support during the holidays by providing gifts and food for eligible children living in the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs (GFWC) New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club (NTJWC) service area. “Our goal is to provide each child with one complete school outfit, underpants, socks, shoes, three toys and Christmas dinner for the entire family” said Patricia Murphy, Head Elf for the Special Santa Project. “In the past we have adopted 40-50 children from Mort Elementary School to make their Christmas wishes come true. However, this year we were only able to adopt 22 children due to a decline in our membership.” As of today, the New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club has received 603 applications for assistance from children at Mort Elementary,

Muller Elementary and the University Area Community Center . “I know I can’t help all of them but I may be able to make this Christmas a little better for a few of them and I have a lot of wonderful friends here that have agreed to participate in the Toy Collection, so I’m really excited” said Murphy. In an effort to meet the needs of the additional applicants Juniors will be hosting collection boxes throughout the Tampa Palms, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel area for new unused toys for children aged 1 to 18. “We are looking primarily for toys for big kids because those are the ones that don’t qualify for Toys for Tots. Most of the requests are for basketballs, dodge balls, scooters, those little MP3 players and gift cards but we will accept any new unwrapped toys because

there is always another child being added to my list” said Murphy, “In a perfect world I’d like to be able to offer parents one toy for each child in their qualifying household but I know money is tight for all of us this year and that’s why I’m hoping the community will come together and help support my little project.” If you are a local business owner and would like to host a toy collection box at your business for employees or customers please contact Patricia Murphy, Project Manager for the GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club.Patricia MurphyGFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club [email protected] www.GFWCNewTampaJuniors.org Phone: 813-991-6152

U.S. law requires that American flags be destroyed and replaced when they are not a fitting emblem for display. Does the American flag at your home need to be replaced? HPH Hospice team offices will accept worn American flags from the public throughout the year. The flags will be delivered to the Marine Corps League Auxiliary Unit #137, Spring Hill , FL. Auxiliary members remove the stars for their Stars for Troops program. The remaining material and scraps are folded in a military fold and properly disposed of through a prayer and burning ceremony. The Marine Corps League Auxiliary Unit #137 started the Stars for Troops program in 2009 in conjunction with Gifts from Home and Lea’s Prayers & Postage as a way to send a token of respect and remembrance to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan . HPH Hospice introduced a new component to its We Honor Veterans pinning ceremonies. In addition to a certificate and a pin, each veteran patient receives a star from a worn American flag with a message that reads “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in Florida . I can no longer fly. The sun and wind have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten.”

SOS! Project "SAVE OUR SHINS!" The Wharton Track and Field program, led by the 2011 Track Coach of the Year, Wes Newton, has had a successful history of excellence with combined results of 17 district and regional championships, and two state runner-up finishes. To continue this tradition of excellence, the Track is in dire need of a "re-surfacing". Wharton’s Track has never been resurfaced. The current state of the track facility is a major obstacle in continuing Wharton’s record of achievement, as its uneven lanes and poor drainage capability can become a source of inadequate training and injury. The Wharton Track Resurfacing Committee, composed of administrators, coaches, parents and students, is raising funds to implement a new 8-lane synthetic track at Wharton High School. This group is currently seeking

Private and Corporate donations, and applying for Grants to meet the fundraising goal of $99,000. The Pepsi Refresh Project makes available millions of dollars to projects intended to improve communities through an online, voting process. Wharton is in the running to be one of the "voting" finalists and will be competing against other grant proposals for $50,000 in funding. The benefits to resurface Wharton’s Track are far reaching, which includes:• Student-Athletes: Rubberized tracks have proven to reduce injury• Environmentally: Rubberized tracks utilize recycled materials• Community: Rubberized tracks allow the school and community to host Track Meets drawing teams from around the state, bringing in revenue to businesses• Wharton High School: A rubberized track will benefit Wharton High School as all students utilize the track during their High School career from HOPE class to Athletics. For more information visit www.whartontrack.us or email [email protected]

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

It drives me crazy. And it happens all the time.

“Oh, so you do karate then.”

"No, it’s called Tō Shin Dō."

“Oh, so it’s Tae Kwon Do.”

"No, it’s (Toh Shin Doh) strictly realistic and sensible self-defense."

“Oh, so its MMA then, mixed martial arts like on TV.”

"No, it’s actually nothing like that. MMA is contest based - nothing like real self-defense where there are no rules - and relies mostly on being bigger, stronger and faster; in other words being the superior athlete. Tō Shin Dō is based on natural body movement using the musculoskeletal system against itself, making the attacker their own worst enemy. The

focus is on bringing a dangerous and threatening situation to an immediate end with a minimum effort and a maximum result approach."

Ultimately what sets Tō Shin Dō apart from other martial arts is the focus on preventing difficult situations in life through an extensive program of personal development and life management. The strategy that drives the Tō Shin Dō programs is one of making yourself less vulnerable by continuing along a path of development which increases your sense of personal power - your ability to control situations calmly, communicate powerfully and effectively or to avoid overreacting to stressful situations, for example.

A key to this powerful program is short meditations and life skills

sessions held at the end of almost every class. Life skills training can take the form of a guided visualization, a personal reflection session or a short discussion exercise with a classmate. A recent life skills exercise involved reflection on your first waking moments of the day. We all slip into habits of semi-conscious or subconsciously driven self-talk that is destructive in nature. Master Russo speaks of the domino effect, “Every morning you condition your mind to set the dominos up so they fall one way or the other, a chain reaction of positive or negative experiences. If we are not

careful we can turn our lives into a living hell, hoping for someone or something to rescue us, or at least occasionally come along and provide temporary relief.” -Master Mark Sentoshi Russo

The Tō Shin Dō student body is over 80% adults because training goes way beyond the narrow confines of physical combat. For more information visit our websites at www.tampaquestma.com or www.sentoshi.com 813-971-5545, 15049 Bruce B. Downs, New Tampa.

FROM THE EXPERT

1) Get the wind mitigation discounts that you are eligible for. A low-cost inspection, usually $75, is good for five years. The inspection details the roof and window features that protect the home from wind damage. Homes built from 2002 on should get maximum discounts due to the stronger building code that went into effect that year. Also, homes built from 1994 on should get some good discounts. Older homes that have had significant work done on them – particularly a new roof - should get good discounts. 2) The next largest discount, after wind mitigation, is for a central burglar and fire alarm. Also, make sure you have smoke detectors, deadbolts, fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors. Single Entry or Gated Communities also get discounts. 3) For Personal property

coverage, always buy the replacement cost option. Get 30% to 40% more at claim time with a very low additional premium. 4) Personal liability coverage is very important. Get at least $300,000 and at least as much as you have with your other policies, such as auto insurance. This covers lawsuits, the cost of defending against lawsuits and covers you worldwide. Plus, it is really inexpensive to purchase. 5) Add extended replacement cost coverage to the policy. For example, in a total loss, most people forget the cost of hauling off the debris before replacing the home. 6) Detached structure coverage is usually 10% of the dwelling coverage. Is this enough? Also, many companies exclude coverage if the detached structure is even partially used for business. You

can get an endorsement to cover business use. 7) For the easiest claims experience, take a photo or video inventory of your home, inside and out, and its contents. Keep it online or off site. Also, keep your blueprints! 8) Add the law and ordinance endorsement for older homes. It covers the added cost of rebuilding due to building code changes. 9) If you are a member of a homeowners association, you may need loss assessment coverage. This low cost coverage can be bought to cover injuries or property damage not covered under the HOA insurance policy limits (it covers common areas). You can usually buy up to $50,000 of coverage. 10) Flood insurance is inexpensive and it covers water damage from floods and heavy rains (The damage must include

two adjacent properties or just yours if you own 2 acres or more). 25% of flood losses occur in areas that are not considered high risk. There is a 30 day waiting period for a policy, except for new financing or refinancing. Policies start as low as $129.Gunter & Gunter InsuranceGary Gunter [email protected]. 813-994-3900 Officewww.InsureThePeople.com.
