Rowland S Howard was arguably one of the most influential guitarists Australia has ever produced. He created a sonic language of sharp, brutal intensity unheard of in this country, in bands such as The Birthday Party, Crime and the City Solution and These Immortal Souls. In a career spanning over 30 years, Rowland left an imprint on culture which has inspired countless musicians. Pop Crimes brings together original members and key collaborators from his illustrious career in a two hour-plus show that will reveal the depth and brilliance that is, Rowland S. Howard. Considering the lineup consists of the original members of These Immortal Souls (Genevieve McGukin, Harry Howard and Craig Williamson), Mick Harvey (Birthday Party, Bad Seeds), Hugo Race (Bad Seeds), Adalita, Jeffrey Wegener (The New Charlatans) and Conrad Standish (The Devastations), this is guaranteed to be one special night

WHAT'S ON

UK legends The Kinks are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their first number one this year with an extensive re-release of their 1964-1970 ctalogue that, thank-fully includes this album - arguably their best work.

Lola Versus Powerman And The Money-goround, Part One is a conceptualised album and takes a satirical look at the various facets of the music industry including song publishers, unions, the press, accountants, business managers, and the road. Musically, Lola Versus Powerman is varied, drawing on the genres of folk, hard rock, and traditional British music hall and Ray Davies’ acute observations have never been more razor sharp.

Racy double entendres. Check. Hilarious slapstic humour. Check. Weird rollerskating Dutch villains. Check. This second instalment in the Austin Powers franchise could very well be the best.

After Dr. Evil and his accomplice Mini-Me escape from a maximum security prison, Austin is called to action once more, this time with his father (Mchael Caine in a hilarious turn) to lend a helping hand. Easilly the best thing Beyonce has done.

Young couple Mac (Seth Rogan) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) are settling down, with their new baby, into a life of quiet suburbia.

Thigs are going bliss-fully until a boisterous college fraternity sets sup house next door. Led by president Teddy (Zac Efron) and his offsider Pete (Dave Franco), this frat is all about partying and, after one call from Mac to the police about the noise, the frat sets its sights firmly on the thitrysomethings and the war quickly escalates.

There are some funny moments here, but a little too spaced out. Efron seems a tad out of place as the devil-may-care frat guy and while Rogan was pleasant enough, perhaps the affable stoner thing is wearing a bit thin.

The sunny side of the street

Talking to Adam Brand about his new album My Side of the Street you can tell that the process of writing and record-ing was a particularly enjoy-

able one for the successful country singer.

“I went to the studio and I didn’t play by any rules I just played and recorded the stuff how I wanted to and without any thoughts of record companies or commercial reasons and things like that,” Brand said.

“There was no one I had to please apart from myself in the studio. So at the end of the day if you feel really happy and comfortable with what you’ve got then it’s so much easier to go out and sing the songs and I think people can see that they’re getting something that’s true to yourself and not just recorded for ‘oh we need this type of song’ or ‘ we have to have this’.”

My Side of the Street - Brand’s tenth studio album - showcases his new found musical freedom and sees the singer once again collaborating with producer Craig Porteils. The thirteen-track album features a guest appearance by Aussie country songstress

Jasmine Rae and a cover of Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs’ hit song Most People I Know Think That I’m Crazy. It’s an album that Brand admits has come about after years of gathering inspiration.

“When you release your first album it’s your very first so you’ve got all your life you’ve lived right up until that point and everything goes into that album,” Brand said.

“The next album you release you’ve got 18 months from the last one so you’ve kind of got to cram it almost. So, I guess with this album it feels like there’s a lot of songs on here that I really believe in strongly and I feel like I’ve sort of been picking up little pieces my whole life that have all sort of ended up at the end of this path and that have got into this album.

“Now, I’m not saying this is the end of my journey - I hope not anyway - but you know it kind of feels like it’s been a long time coming, a lot of bits and pieces have gone into this album.”

The album’s lead single What Your Love Looks Like is a country/rock ballad full of romantic imagery. The video for the track was filmed at some well known Sydney locations including the beautiful Curzon Hall in Marsfield.

“It certainly was one of the most involved videos I’ve done,” Brand said.

Though the country star admits he

KATE REID

The next album you release you’ve got 18 months so you have to cram it

enjoys all aspects of being a musician, at the end of the day when it comes to a choice between writing and recording and heading out on the road - it’s the latter that wins out every time.

“For a performer, being on stage singing your songs is the ultimate. I’ve been off the road for the last seven months, I guess you could say, so you kind of get itchy feet, you’re ready to get back out there and play again.”

Local audiences will have the chance to experience Brand’s love of the stage - along with tracks from the new album - when the My Side of The Street tour comes to Hexham Bowling Club later this month.

Looking back over a career that has spawned five gold, and three platinum albums, an ARIA Top 5 album, several ARIA nominations for Best Country Album, as well as 12 Golden Guitars, Brand still has a few projects that stand out in such a successful and long-lived career.

“I suppose one in particular would be The ANZAC, then there’s songs like Hell of a Ride, It’s Gonna Be Ok and Good Things in Life so there’s a few songs in there obviously that mark milestones, not only in my career but also in my life, so those songs - I’m not sure if being proud of them is the right word - but just being pivotal points in my life.”

THE JUNGLE KINGS PREMIER HOTEL SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

Deep in the Bondi Jungle, in the eastern suburbs of Sydney - the playground of rich and poor, gang-sters and suburban families, surfies and rev-heads, corporate giants and hoboes, sharks and whales - an area of high priced real estate and junk-filled streets, local kids on skateboards and tourists by the truckload. Out of this ferociously fecund international vortex of bluebottles and backpackers, this Antipodean urban jungle appeared The Jungle Kings.

Playing an up-vibe selection of tunes that most people want to hear - what you might call “rockin’ rhythm n’swing” - taking their repertoire from the many styles and influences they have waded into on their various pathways to the 21st century.

The “rockin’” end includes Elvis Presley and Wilson Pickett to Green Day and a whole lot in between. The “rhythm n’ swing” side includes classic swing and jazz by the likes of Cab Calloway, Louis Jordan, Louis Prima, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis and others, played with a strong rhythmic drive and a classic jungle beat.

if you’r elooking for a good night out full of unpretentious rock and roll fun, then you’d do well to check out The Jungle Kings.

The kids are alright

With the world just starting to get back to normal for prodigious singer Alexa Curtis after taking out the

inaugural season of the hit channel Nine show The Voice Kids last month, the affable ten-year-old is gearing up to hit the road with fellow Voice Kids cohorts Bella, Chris, Ethan, Grace and Robbie and fans in Newcastle will have a chance to get up close and personal with their favourite stars of tomorrow.

“It’s going to be so much fun - I just can’t wait,” a bubbly Curtis told TE.

“Audiences can expect lots of enthu-siasm, some really amazing songs and, most of all, there’s going to be lots and lots of fun and lots of connection with the audience. We’re going out there to give it our all.”

Curtis first burst into the nation’s consciousness during her blind audi-tion on The Voice Kids with a blistering rendition of the Alicia Keys hit Girl on Fire. Her beyond-her-years voice made all four coaches Mel B, Delta Goodrem, and Joel and Benji Madden turn their chairs, but it was Goodrem who snagged the young singer into her team. Curtis

STEPHEN BISSET

MUSIC

said Goodrem’s mentorship had been invaluable. “I learnt so much from Delta,” Curtis said. “She really taught me to connect with the audience - before The Voice, I never smiled when I sang because I was so focused on the perfor-mance but Delta showed me, while it’s important to be focused, it’s also very important to connect with the audience and show that you’re having fun.”

Curtis, who was the youngest contest-ant in the top six, said that she wasn’t intimidated by competing against older kids.

“I think that an age is just a number,” she said.

“The competition was hard, but I don’t think going up against older kids made it harder, because it’s all about the perfor-mance so I just went out there thinking ‘this is my time to shine’.

With the win setting Curtis up with quite a promising future in the music industry, she said she didn’t want to rush into anything.

“After the tour finished, I’ll probably have a rest for a couple of weeks, but after that I want to do some vocal coach-ing because I’ve never done that before and I really want to see what my voice can do,” she said. “I’m also really inter-ested in learning the piano and basically building it all bit by bit.”

In the S.W.I.M of thingswith Die! Die! Die!

Hot on the heels of their mammoth new long player, S.W.I.M, Dunedin New Zealand’s noisiest sons, Die! Die! Die! are making the trip

across the pond to give Aussie punters another up-close taste of their brand of punk brutality.

“We can’t wait to kick off this Aussie tour,” frontman Andrew Wilson told TE.

“Australia has always been really good to us - the crowds have always been great. People seem into the new album, too so we can’t wait to get over there and play it live.

The band ran into some rocky ground leading up to and after the release of their last album, the Taite Music Prize-shortlisted Harmony thanks largely to a gruelling touring schedule but now, with a new outlook and new bass player in Michael Logie (The Mint Chicks), things couldn’t be better.

“Harmony was quite a difficult album to make - but this one, in comparison was really quite easy,” Wilson said.

STEPHEN BISSET

MUSIC

“We recorded it over three days at a studio in Auckland and then I went over to London to do all the vocals and it was mixed in Tasmania at the same

place we did the last album. I’d say the secret to this one was that we really tried not to overthink things.”

The band enlisted the services of

Chris Townend (Portishead, D12, Violent Femmes) to co-produce the album and Wilson said he was invaluable in challeng-ing the band to raise their creative bar.

“We had a really good working relation-ship with Chris,” he said.

“The great thing about him is that he doesn’t pander to what might be the most easily digestible sounds - he comes from a more artistic viewpoint over a commercial one and he really helped bring the more ‘interesting’ elements in our music to the fore.”

Wilson said there was a sense of a re-invigorated Die! Die! Die! with this album - reflected somewhat in its title which is an acronym for Someone Who Isn’t Me - a sentiment Wilson said was reflective of his maturation as a song-writer.

“Yeah, I guess the title is kind of about new beginnings and also the end of things in a way,” he said.

“I guess I feel like a different person on this record than I have previously, so it’s about closing that chapter and starting a new one. So, after we’re done in Australia it’s back over to Europe for the summer and then we’ll be looking to start writing for the next album.”
