A 40-hectare parcel of land on the site of the former Metford Road brickworks will be the location of

Maitland’s second public hospital. The announcement was made

on Friday by NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, and Maitland MP Robyn Parker, after a nine-month selection process which saw 35 sites between Ashtonfield and East Branxton put forward.

The Metford site, which is Crown land but is still being leased by CSR, was chosen from a shortlist of six because of its proximity to the rail line and public transport, the private hospital and population growth areas. “This has ticked so many boxes,” Mrs Skinner explained.

“Now that we know where the home of the future new Maitland region hospital is, we can move forward with the next important steps in planning for a major new referral hospital.”

The site was also chosen because it is six times the size of the current hospital’s land and is not located in a flood-prone area.

The new facility will provide high-level emergency care, and will include an intensive care unit and oncology department, and will also have an ambulance station and helipad, which Mrs Skinner believes will reduce the burden on local hospitals, as well as John Hunter.

“This hospital, which will probably be similar to John Hunter Hospital in terms of patient numbers, will be part of a network,” she said.

“The smaller hospitals, such as Singleton, Cessnock and Kurri, will

complement it.”Concerns have already been raised about the noise

impact on nearby residents, parking and coal dust from the adjacent rail line, which Ms Parker said had been addressed.

“These are question I have asked...The site is large enough to manage these constraints, including a noise buffer,” Ms Parker said.

“I have a lot of confidence in the planning process that they have taken the time to address these issues.”

Call me crazy, but isn’t the function of

a launch to mark the start of something?

Now that both parties have had their official launches, the 2013 campaign can begin!

Oh, wait...What a strange thing these

campaign launches are. While the Liberal Party had

theirs the Sunday before last, Labor held theirs on Sunday just gone, as thousands of Australians here and overseas have already cast their vote at pre-polling locations.

Call me crazy, but isn’t the function of a launch to officially mark the start of something?

It’s yet another aspect of this election campaign that is hard to wrap your head around.

So here we are, in the final days before polling day.

As of Wednesday, the blackout on political advertising begins.

We’ll be treated to the Coalition’s costings at some point before dawn on Saturday.

And no doubt the unfolding crisis in Syria will dominate much of the political debate towards the end of the week. As it rightly should. It will be one of the first big challenges for the new Government.

All the polls indicate that come

Saturday eve, the Coalition will be given a mandate to form government and the last three long years of a Labor-lead minority Government will be consigned to history.

Whatever side of the fence you’re on, something we can all enjoy on polling day is the chance to be active participants in choosing our

next Government in a peaceful and community-minded way.

And there’s nothing more community-minded than treating yourself to a sausage sandwich or buying a plate of slices from the cake stall at the local primary school.

After this strange campaign, I think we’ve all earned it.

We’ve all earned a sausage sandwich or two

A new scheme unveiled at the Coalition’s campaign launch late last month would see apprentices eligible for a

$20,000 interest-free loan, should the Coalition be elected on September 7.

The Trade Support Loan, paid in installments of varying amounts over four years, would be used to meet the day-to-day expenses associated with completing an apprenticeship, including living expenses and would be similar to the Higher Education Loan Program for tertiary students, where the loan is not repaid until a specific income threshold is reached.

Apprentices who are completing a Certificate III or IV, and will be employed in a trade on the National Skills Needs List are eligible.

Alyce Alcorn, a second year apprentice fitter machinist from Largs, said she would welcome any money from the government, but wondered whether a loan is the best solution.

“I think a better idea could be to pump

Melissah CoMber

Better terms for tradies Apprentices to receive uni-style loans under a Coalition Government

Largs apprentice Alyce Alcorn welcomes any money that would benefit apprentices

a little bit more money into our hourly pay rate or change the award wage,” she said.

Ms Alcorn earned $7.80 an hour during her first year and said that after paying for necessities like rent, petrol and food, she had $10 left over at the end of the week. She had to pay her TAFE fees and some of her tools out of her own pocket.

“As an apprentice, you have to sacrifice a lot because of money being tight. It is near impossible to get a bank loan and very difficult if you live out of home.”

But Hunter Labor candidate Joel Fitzgibbon believes that this announcement is just a smokescreen.

“Tony Abbott is taking money from you with one hand and loaning it back to you with another,” he said.

“[Mr Abbott] has already hinted at plans to cut Trade Training Centres. What other cuts has Tony Abbott got planned for the skills budget?”

Nationals candidate, Michael Johnsen, said that the loan will make it easier for apprentices to complete their trade.

“We know apprentices do it tough and that completion rates are far too low,” he said. “The Coalition’s plan will help ease that pressure.”

Apprenticeships must be completed for the loan to apply.

W e’re getting down to the business end of the campaign – and it’s reached a predictable stage. Both

Leaders are stalking up and down the east coast, both trying to hold their nerve.

Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne with a bit of Tasmania thrown in. This is where the marginal seats are and where his election will be won and lost.

For Kevin Rudd, he’s still the underdog but he doesn’t play the part very well. He’s campaigning like it’s 2007 but the rock star sheen has worn off and his folksy ways are evoking more rolling of the eyes than gleeful cheers.

You see, Kevin Rudd is a confidence player and is spurred on by a good poll or a glowing media report. Of late, both have been few and far between. The affect has been an increasingly tetchy Mr Rudd – especially when two separate opinion polls showed he was in danger of losing his seat of Griffith.

He was forced to hold two campaign events in his own seat to stave off a September 7 result that would see him become only the third prime minister in history to lose an election and be turfed out of parliament.

As we get closer to polling day this Saturday, things seem to be stabilising.

All indications still point towards a solid defeat but not annihilation.

The negative attack ads have started and are helping Labor’s prospects. But Kevin Rudd’s biggest win this campaign has been his effective attack of the Coalition’s Paid Parental Leave scheme. Women in particular are becoming skeptical of the economic argument for it. If the economic argument is flailing, the Coalition is going to have a tough job selling the political one.

Still, Rudd knows that his Prime Ministership isn’t going to be retained on costings and the PPL. He’s been banging on

about both for a good week and while it has been effective, it’s wearing thin.

So, he’s started on the personal and personality-based attacks. This week in an interview he pitted his foreign affairs credential against Tony Abbott’s, questioning Mr Abbott’s “temperament” to deal with such issues as Syria.

Brace yourself for a barrage of personal insults in this last campaign week.

The final days leading up to Saturday’s vote will get very dirty indeed.

Skin cancer is deadly serious business

GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED NOW!

The most important thing you may do for your health this winter is get your skin checkedThe sun-smart message is often neglected during the winter.Winter may prove to be the best time for a full skin check. As most people are covered up during the winter months, this minimises sun exposure to skin lesions and moles. This can allow for better dermoscopy viewing (a distinct magnifying light, which allows a doctor to closely examine spots on the skin). Remember to protect your skin this winter by applying 50+ sunscreen to exposed areas of skin.If you notice a spot on the skin that looks different from the others or is changing, bleeding or itchy, it should be examined by a doctor.

T he war of words between Hunter candidates Joel Fitzgibbon and Michael Johnsen took an unexpected turn last week, with

Mr Fitzgibbon threatening legal action against Mr Johnsen for alleged defamatory comments.

The comments were made in relation to the proposed asylum seeker camp in Singleton, for which $43 million was allocated in the Government’s budget update in early August. Mr Fitzgibbon said that he was unaware of such of facility, claiming that he was not told because the centre would only be a contingency should the Papua New Guinea solution fail.

However, Mr Johnsen believes that Mr Fitzgibbon is either “lying or incompetent”, saying that Mr Fitzgibbon should have done his homework.

“If you’re not taking the time to make yourself familiar with what’s in the budget then you’re just not doing your job,” he said.

Mr Johnsen said he received a letter a fortnight ago from Mr Fitzgibbon’s lawyers, demanding he retract his comments and apologise, but he will not back down.

“I liken it to football – every time a player drops the ball he doesn’t go running to the referee. Joel needs to harden up.”

Melissah CoMber

War of words continues Fitzgibbon threatens legal action against Nationals candidate Johnsen

But Mr Fitzgibbon believes Mr Johnsen is playing dirty, saying that Mr Johnsen’s claim that the legal threat is to keep him

quiet on the issue is “ridiculous”. “I have worked hard to establish myself

and place a high value in my reputation,”

Mr Fitzgibbon said. “I won’t have people questioning my integrity and I will take action to stop [it].”

A SUSTAINABLE COUNCIL FOR A SUSTAINABLE CITY

Funding Our Future

RATING - WE NEED YOUR INPUT Council is talking with the community about funding the future we want for our city. Without significant change, Council will face a funding shortfall of $92 million over the next ten years. While all sources of Council income and potential savings are being examined, rates revenue will be a major part of the solution.

Deliver services as programmed Enhance and improve services Deliver reduced services and/or deficit budgetsIncrease rates to deliver services as programmed, being 7.25% p/a for seven years. This option would see all services continue, as well as building an indoor 25m pool, construction of ‘The Levee’ and river link building in Central Maitland and upgrades to Maitland Railway Station precinct and surrounds. This would equate to an average increase of $89 per year on the average residential rate.

Increase rates sufficiently to improve or expand 18 key service areas, being 8.95% p/a for seven years. This would include all services and projects as programmed, as well as see new projects and programs initiated in line with community priorities, with a significant boost to road and footpath funding, improved city appearance, new youth facilities, expanded recreational cycleways and more. This would equate to an average increase of $116 per year on the average residential rate.

Increase rates by annual rate peg amount only, being approximately 3% p/a. This would result in deficit budgets and/or cuts to the broad range of council services as well as reductions in the initiatives already programmed. This would equate to an average increase of $35 per year on the average residential rate.

Financial support: Coalition to compensate terror victims

Liberal Party leader, Tony Abbott, visited the Hunter last week to announce a new compensation package for Australians implicated

in terrorist attacks overseas since 2001. Under the scheme, Australian victims of

terrorism and their families, dating back to September 10, 2001, will be able to access up to $75,000 in financial compensation.

Mr Abbott said the compensation scheme would apply to Australians who have been specifically targeted by terrorists overseas during a press conference in Newcastle.

“The bombs didn’t go off in Bali because there were locals there, the bombs went off in Bali because there were Australians there,” he said. “Now when people suffer because of the fact that they are Australian, a decent nation should offer some acknowledgment, some recognition and this is modest enough yet it would be a significant way of acknowledging...our fellow Australians.”

Mr Abbott said steps would be taken in the first 100 days of a Coalition Government to implement the scheme, which will cost around $30 million.

Around 300 individuals and next of kin will be entitled to compensation. Novocastrian Paul Anicich was seriously injured in the second Bali Bombings in 2005.

Mr Anicich was full of praise for Mr Abbott, who assisted Mr Anicich and his wounded wife in Bali after the attacks.

“At the time you were involved with those hurt in the second Bali bombing, you describe yourself as the then Minister of Health,” Mr Anicich said. “You were not acting in that capacity that night on the Island of Bali, as I understand it, you were acting as the man you are. So, you can imagine the gratitude that I have for you.”

Reacting to criticism from the Liberal Party leader for not retrospectively assisting victims of terrorism, Labor candidate for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon, said the Labor Government had consistently stated it would consider additional assistance for victims.

In 2012, the Government established a scheme providing up to $75,000 to Australians who are harmed in an overseas terrorist act or to the families of Australians who are killed.

“The Labor Government has maintained a strong commitment to meeting the costs and needs of those directly affected by past acts of terrorism and has consistently stated that it would consider the provision of additional assistance on a case-by-case basis,” Ms Claydon said in a statement.

The compensation announcement is particularly close to the hearts of Novocastrians, as three residents were among the 22 Australian tourists who died in the twin blasts at Jimbaran Bay in 2005.

Paper is whirring around the office of Maitland RSL Sub-Branch almost at the speed of light, after the organisation received a grant

from Maitland City Bowls, Sports and Recreation Club for the purchase of a new photocopier.

The $3000 grant was awarded under the ClubGRANTS scheme, which takes profit from poker machines and distributes the money back into the community.

Secretary of the sub-branch, Cr Henry Meskauskas, said that the funds were desperately needed to support the administration of the sub-branch.

“There are five associations that come under our umbrella – the netball club,

Maitland RSL Sub-Branch President, Eric Bell, with Maitland City Vice-President, Hal Cheetham

Support for local groups RSL sub-branch gets much-needed new equipment thanks to grant

welfare, the Ladies Auxillary and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs as well as the sub-branch,” he said.

“They all come in and use the office facilities.”

Vice-President of Maitland City, Hal Cheetham, said that the grant allows the club to support Maitland projects.

“We want to try and establish ourselves as part of the community,” he explained.

“We’re only too happy to help the RSL out.”

Other organisations receiving funds include Rutherford Public School and Maitland Camera Club.

by Maitland City Council Mayor, Cr Peter Blackmore

all council matters: maitland.nsw.gov.au

L ast week I officially launched a new tour resource for the Maitland Gaol which caters for deaf and hearing impaired

visitors. The launch comes less than twelve

months after the introduction of two new tours – one for children and one focusing on the escapes of Maitland Gaol.

They join the general audio tour which has been offered to visitors of this great facility for many years.

The development of the new captioned and Auslan tours in March this year came about when the staff at Maitland Gaol were approached by the Australian Communications Exchange (ACE), who have previously produced Auslan and captioned tours for other sites and were seeking to do the same for the gaol.

The opportunity was perfect for Maitland Gaol – except it was preferred that the new tours tell the same story as the existing audio tours, so ACE worked with the staff to convert the general tour to the Auslan and captioned tours.

The result is an experience to please all visitors of all abilities.

The tour offers an authentic and intriguing account of what went on at Maitland Gaol while it was open from 1848 to 1998.

In its later years I was fortunate enough to have a behind the scenes look at the operation of the gaol as former Councillor Ray Fairweather worked as a correctional services officer – seeing it from his perspective was certainly an eye-opener!

While not so sinister these days, the gaol remains an iconic building that brings back many memories for long time locals – from the school children that practiced prison break drills across the road, to the families who knew people on the inside and the many men and women who called it their workplace.

Now as a tourist attraction I hope many more memories are made there, by people from all over Australia and the world and this new tour is a key step to ensuring as many people as possible are able to enjoy the stories of this fascinating site.

New Maitland Gaol tours ensure everyone can enjoy it

Over the last two weeks a trend has come to light where box trailers are being stolen from residential

premises. In two weeks, 6 trailers have been

taken in the greater Maitland area. There has been no pattern as to where the trailers have been taken from, with all areas suffering a theft.

What is common amongst the thefts is the trailers have been left unattended in accessible areas with no security devices to thwart would- be thieves.

In one matter, an offender reversed up to a trailer in the front yard of a residential house, in full daylight, attached the trailer to the back of his 4WD and drove off. The offence was witnessed by a neighbour, who, seeing how brazen the offender was, thought the person must have had permission to take the trailer.

With the theft of the trailers having no real pattern, devising police strategies to combat the crime is difficult.

That is why we are calling on any person who has had a trailer taken to report the matter immediately so it may be possible to catch trailers being towed. Any person with information about a suspicious trailer is encouraged to contact their local police station.

Of course, better security of trailers is the best option. Always try and keep trailers in a yard and not at the front of a premises. Various other security measures can also be taken to secure you trusty trailer. Simply using a heavy chain and good quality lock to secure the trailer to a immovable object is a good option. Chaining the wheels, removing the tow hitch or even using wheel locks can stop a thief in their tracks.

An important thing to remember is to keep up security measures when driving with your trailer. There have been instances where trailers have been unhitched from the back of cars and just towed away. It is a good idea to lock you trailer to your car when it is left unattended.

T he development may have been approved, but the hard work is only beginning for the committee of Morpeth Men’s Shed.

After clearing the first hurdle at Council last week, the shed now needs to raise $500,000 to construct two buildings for their new premises on Duckenfield Road.

With over 100 members on their books, Secretary Paul Lindeman said that the current premises at the Morpeth Uniting Church Hall was not big enough.

“We usually have 40 to 50 come along each week, and we’re more than happy to take new members, which is why we need more space,” he explained.

The Morpeth shed was the first in the Maitland area and has wood and metalwork facilities, holds computer classes and delivers information on men’s health, however Mr Lindeman believes the social side is one of the more important aspects.

“There are a lot of men who retire or are made redundant who lose the social interaction they were getting at work,” he explained.

“Coming here gives them a real sense of worth and belonging.”

They hope to have construction underway within the next year.

H ot on the heels of a run of sold-out metropolitan dates in support of their massive sophomore long player

‘Singularity’, arguably Blacktown’s heaviest sons, Northlane, are gearing up to do it all again, this time hitting the regional centres.

“Yeah, this one is more of a regional tour and we’re really looking forward to getting out there because the regional fans are our bread and butter,” frontman Adrian Fitipaldes told TE.

While Northlane certainly pricked up a few ears with their debut album, ‘Discoveries’, ‘Singularity’ showcases a

band with a maturing musical sensibility. While definitely anchored in the metalcore camp, these guys are equally at home with the crunching riffs and sonic brutality as they are with creating space.

Fitipaldes said that while the band were really put to the test during the recording of the album, it was all totally worth it.

“It was all pretty much about trying to kill two birds with one stone,” he said.

“We were in tour in Canada last year and we were really keen to record while we were over there to save going home and coming all the way back to record. So, after Canada we went to New Jersey and recorded with William Putney [Four Year Strong, Thy Art Is Murder].

“We wrote most of the album on tour but when we got to the studio, we still had about three songs to write and Jon [Deiley,

guitar], who writes the majority of the music, managed to write three awesome songs in three days which is a pretty amazing feat as it’s something that you just can’t force.”

So what about the album’s title? Anyone who has heard it will know that Northlane are more than a one-trick pony.

“Singularity refers to a point in time in the future where science and technology have advanced to a point that we just can’t conceive and I think that’s a cool metaphor for us,” he said. “Also, there is an alternate meaning that places importance on the individual – it’s about looking at not giving all your attention to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West and focusing on yourself.”

Catch Northlane at the Cambridge Hotel on Sunday, September 8.

Range life

Troy Kemp (one half of the sensational country rock duo Mcalister Kemp) is no stranger when it comes to the cover

music scene. With 20 years of live performance under his belt and a music career that has seen him travel the globe and back, you can be assured that you are going to get an energetic, laugh a minute, sing along, professional show that will leave you wanting more.

A Troy Kemp show is one guy, one

guitar, one audience and one big set-list that will take you back to the 60s and then bring you through the decades to land you smack bang in the hits of the present day.

Covering songs from Elvis, The Beatles, Van Morrison and Johnny Cash through to Jason Mraz, Train, The Foo Fighters and Keith Urban, there’s a little bit of something for everybody.

Catch Troy Kemp when he plays at the George Tavern on Sunday, September 8.

T he Hunter’s very own ‘sonic ram-raiders’, The Great Dividing Range, are set to play a hometown show later this month – something that’s

become a rare occurrence for the band as its members venture off into various other musical territories.

Known for a musical gumbo of Gram Parsons-esque alt.country and the lo-fi meanderings of bands like Pavement and Guided by Voices, The Great Dividing Range’s sound is underpinned by the rapier-sharp turn of phrase of frontman Scott Blackley and the on-stage explorations of keyboard player and resident mad professor Chris Alford.

It’s been a while since The Range have graced any stages, let alone their spiritual

home of the Junkyard, so expect this gig to be chock-a-block full of musical adventurism.

FASHION FIXATIONby KATHERINE TWEED

If you want to see a topic discussed, or have a question answered, email

[email protected]

There is nothing quite as transforming as an overseas holiday. I recently went on a month long trip to Europe

and I loved every part of it; from experiencing new places and new fashions to new lifestyles and new languages, I loved it all. Except maybe the travelling part.

You don’t know the meaning of tedious until you have been on a 24-hour plane flight; it is a killer and as I am not a seasoned traveller, I had no idea what to expect, which made preparing for the flight a little difficult.

Right up until the morning I left, I had still not decided what would be best to wear for the flight – do I dress for comfort or do I dress to look good? Should I try to look like I am a regular on a plane or should I dress like it is my first time?

I ended up doing something in-between and found out the hard way that trying to look good just doesn’t work when your feet swell up to size 100, you sweat off your makeup in the first two hours and your clothes

get scrunched up like there is no tomorrow.

I didn’t try to dress like it was my first time on a plane but after a few hours cramped in economy, I realised that I had made some fundamental mistakes when it came to ‘aeroplane fashion’, which gave away my inexperience in an instant.

Here are a couple of tips that I will remember for the next time I hop on a plane:

• Wear the smallest amount of makeup possible, if any at all, and wear your hair up or off your face.

• Take some face wipes in your carry on luggage so you can use them to freshen up.

• Don’t wear something that crinkles easily or that shows sweat; choose your colours wisely.

• Try to avoid wearing too many accessories; I ended up stowing mine away in my bag because they annoyed me too much.

• Pack a spare t-shirt in your carry on so you can slip it on just before arrival.

• Take a light cardigan.

What to wear on a long-haul flight

STAYING HEALTHYby Elisha Stein

Elisha is a Registered Nurse and Midwife, with years of experience working in emergency departments, general wards, maternity and in the community.

No parent ever wants to see their child hurt, but completely removing any chance of a child playing and getting a few

bumps and scrapes can have serious longer term effects and can lead to a lot more pain down the track than the tears shed over a grazed knee.

Of course a parent is responsible for making sure any play is safe and suitable for their child. But can you be too careful?

Children who are allowed to take physical risks learn resilience and become more active, says a report that urges parents and teachers to overcome their playground fears.

There are just as many risks associated with not letting children take everyday risks as letting them take on reasonable challenges, says University of Sydney Professor Anita Bundy.

She is particularly concerned that physical inactivity persists into adulthood and can contribute to the development of chronic diseases, and will tell an upcoming occupational therapy conference in Adelaide that children should be allowed to fall and

pick themselves up and fail at tasks so they learn resilience.

She bases her view on a multi-university study at 12 primary schools involving children aged five to seven and their parents.

“If you ask parents what they want for their child, they will virtually always tell you they want them to be happy and resilient,” says Prof Bundy, who co-ordinated the research.

“When they were children they often played in trees and around water without adult supervision. But they will say they would never let their own children do what they did.

“Usually when they stop and think about it, they realise it helped them learn to take responsibility,” she says.

“Parents also need to think about what motivates them. Are they really worried about their child being hurt or are they more worried about what people will think if their child is hurt.”

Stopping your child from jumping off that log may be teaching them a whole lot more than not falling over. Think what they may learn about not ever trying things, or what they won’t learn about picking themselves up.

Why kids need to take risks

More appealing than ever: Australia’s favourite city car, the Mazda2, gets a sporty new makeover

Australia’s favourite city car, the Mazda2, is now more appealing with the arrival of a revised Sport range that adds new features and

improved value. The refreshed line-up sees a new Neo

Sport model replace the previous entry-level Neo while the newly upgraded Maxx Sport model replaces both the Maxx and the Genki at the top of the Mazda2 range.

Mazda2 Neo Sport carries over the impressive list of features from the outgoing Neo but now also adds 15-inch alloy wheels at no additional cost. With air conditioning, cruise control, steering wheel mounted audio controls, USB input and power windows all standard features, the Mazda2 Neo Sport is perhaps the best-value Mazda ever.

With a long list of safety features like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), traction control and six airbags standard across the range, Mazda2 is not only one of the most stylish small cars on the road, but also one of the safest.

Maxx Sport now offers more than $1,200 in additional equipment having received a luxurious ‘Genki’ style makeover. It now comes fitted with front fog lamps, a stylish chrome exhaust extension, a trip computer, leather gear shift knob (on manual models) and a red stitched leather wrapped steering wheel.

A further touch of class sees an update to the interior trim, with red stitching also added to the comfortable front and rear seats.

Driver and passenger comfort is also

enhanced with the inclusion of climate control air conditioning and the ambient temperature is now displayed on the instrument cluster.

It is also more affordable, with the Maxx Sport’s list price dropping by $760 for both

manual and automatic models.Mazda Australia’s director of

marketing, Alastair Doak, said the Mazda2 is already Australia’s favourite city car and this latest upgrade makes it even more appealing than ever.

“Style and safety have always been two hallmarks of the Mazda2 range, but with buyers also benefitting from improved value there is more reason than ever before for new car buyers to consider this impressive light car stalwart,” he said.

ber 4, 2013No dodging it: America’s top truck heading to our shores

Facelift for Prado: Improved safety features introduced

New right-hand drive versions of one of America’s favourite sports trucks, the Dodge Ram, are now available in Australia.

Leading independent vehicle importer Performax International has announced it is taking orders for the Dodge Ram Laramie 2500, following the completion of a production prototype and Australian design Rule Certification.

Vehicles are available to order, with delivery for August orders available in December/January. Individual pricing will be determined by customer specifications and prevailing exchange rates.

The Dodge Ram comes with impressive credentials. It is the 2013 North American Truck of the Year and 2013 Texas Truck of the Year.

Performax International General Manager Glenn Soper said he expected strong demand for the new range, which expands the portfolio of the company’s American sports trucks to three brands.

“The Ram has been extremely popular in the United States since it was released earlier this year and our customers have been keenly waiting for the right-hand drive version,” Mr Soper said.

“It’s been worth the wait, because the RHD Ram has turned out beautifully, with excellent road manners, performance, comfort and unmatched towing capability for those with big trailers.”

Performax International is Australia’s leading independent importer and converter of premium American sports cars and pick-ups.

Toyota is set to launch a facelift LandCruiser Prado range with improved safety features, better third-row seat access and higher

interior and exterior specification. The new LandCruiser Prado is scheduled

to have its Australian wholesale release in late October.

The new Prado has a refreshed exterior and interior, including daytime running lamps on all models.

Important safety upgrades across the range will include trailer sway control and emergency brake signal.

Trailer sway control gives LandCruiser Prado owners an additional layer of confidence and control when towing.

LandCruiser Prado’s new face draws on several structural elements from its unique design heritage; a further evolution of the classic Prado grille and a vertical, two-step construction accentuating the new Toyota’s rugged appearance.

A comprehensive interior upgrade combines new switchgear and instrumentation with enhanced trim and ornamentation, improved second and third row seat designs with new fabrics, and new interior colour schemes.

LandCruiser Prado debuted in Australia in 1990 and is now midway through its fourth generation.

It is offered with the choice of 4.0-litre petrol and 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engines.

Kurri Bowling Club’s brilliant season continued over the weekend with Greg Abel and Andrew Rees winning the District

Champion of Champion Pairs Title. With Nathan Dawson claiming the District Champion of Champion Singles last week, Kurri have once again dominated in the Blue Ribbon events in the Hunter District in 2013. We all wish the Kurri players well for the Zone and State Playoffs.

In the COC Pairs on the weekend, Greg Abel and Andrew Rees scored an exciting win over East Maitland’s Ken Wells and Rod Lawton 23-20 in the Final at Lorn Park. Semi-Final results saw Greg and Andrew defeat Jon Dimopoulos and Michael Cronin 23-10 and Ken and Rod beat Paul Ryan and Wayne Lambourne.

The extremely popular BCIB Big Bowl Challenge commences on Wednesday, September 11 with a massive 1st Round Game at ECBC. In a replay of last seasons Grand Final, East Cessnock Comets take on Kurri Cannons at ECBC at 6pm. Should be an exciting contest and is very spectator friendly being played in approximately 2 hours. On Friday, September 13 last season’s 3rd place getter East Maitland Griffins will lock horns with Maitland City Hunters at East Maitland. With two local derbys showcasing our wonderful sport of Lawn Bowls in the Hunter, I encourage

spectators to get along and take a look at these two contests and enjoy a sociable exciting evening at ECBC or EMBC.

Hunter District Juniors travelled to Dubbo last weekend to contest the Noel Sloane Memorial Junior Pairs. Kallan Egar and Jesse Herbert finished in 4th position while Alex Hannah and Mollie Wilton came home in 5th place. A solid performance by some of our very talented group of Junior Bowlers we have in the Hunter District.

The Indoor Singles Championship being played at East Cessnock Bowling Club for affiliated Bowling Members who are social members of ECBC has reached Quarter-Final stage. Simon Mitchell will take on Jesse Herbert, Ross Patterson meets Brodie Jobson, Jocky Wilson does battle with Steve Davies and Clint Doust is up against Rick Hill. These Bowlers are battling it out for automatic entry into next years PBA Qualifiers to be held at ECBC. The winner and runner-up will have their $250 entry fee and membership paid into the 4 qualifying tournaments being held at ECBC next year.

That’s all for this week. If you have any relevant Hunter Bowls News, please send it on to me at [email protected] or call Paul Wesche at ECBC on 4990 1444.

Take care and enjoy your Bowls. See you on the green.

kurri wins champion of champion double

Top 8 finish: Knights must beat Eels for a finals berth

A fter a big win over the Brisbane Broncos on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium, the Newcastle Knights remain in seventh spot

with just one round to play. The Knights, on 27 points, need to defeat

the Parramatta Eels this Sunday afternoon at Hunter Stadium to secure their place in the 2013 final series.

There are three teams behind the Knights on 26 points; North Queensland Cowboys, Gold Coast Titans and the New Zealand Warriors, who all play on Saturday and remain in contention to play finals.

The Cowboys play the West Tigers at home, the Titans are up against the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park and the Warriors travel to WIN Stadium to face the St George Illawarra Dragons. A win for any of these three means they move to 28 points, ahead of the Knights before Sunday’s game.

If the Knights win on Sunday, they move to 29 points and secure seventh position,

leaving the other three teams fighting for eighth spot. If the Knights lose and either the Cowboys, Titans or the Warriors post a win, the Knights drop out of the eight.

Seventh position plays sixth in week one of the finals. Currently the Cronulla Sharks are on 30 points in sixth position, the same points as the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in fifth but they have a superior points difference to Cronulla.

The Bulldogs can secure fifth position when they play the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night while the Sharks travel to Canberra Stadium to take on the Raiders on Sunday evening.

The teams in the top four have secured their place in the top four but their position could change based on results.

The minor premiership is set to be decided on Friday night, when the Rabbitohs and Roosters play at ANZ Stadium.

The Knights take on the Eels at Hunter Stadium on Sunday. Kick off is at 3pm.

The Knights remain in seventh spot after their win over the Broncos on Friday night

C essnock-born darts wizard Simon Whitlock was unlucky not to claim a spot in the final of the inaugural Sydney Darts Masters on the

weekend, being knocked out in the semi-final by arguably the greatest player to ever pick up a dart, the UK’s Phil “The Power” Taylor.

Whitlock roared into the final four in Sydney with a thrilling 8-1 victory over Andy ‘The Hammer’ Hamilton in their quarter-final clash.

Whitlock opened the game with a 180, bringing the capacity Luna Park crowd to its feet, and was relentless as he powered into the semis, with Hamilton’s only leg coming as he hit a 180 and finished 84 on the bull for a 12-darter.

With fellow Australians Paul Nicholson and Clinton Bridge bowing out in the last eight on Friday night, Whitlock carried the hopes of the host nation on his shoulders going into Saturday’s semi-finals – but unfortunately for Whitlock, ‘The Power’ was in fine form, dashing Australia’s hopes with a sensational 10-6 semi-final win over the world number four.

Broken, but not unbowed, Whitlock was philosophical about his match-up with Taylor.

“Phil got ahead of me early on in the semi-final and I left myself too much to do,” he said.

“I’m proud to have got this far, though, and it’s been an amazing week for me and for darts in Australia.

“It’s a great moment for us to have such a big event here in Sydney and hopefully this is just the start of massive things for the sport in Australia.”

Taylor averaged 109.42 in his semi-final triumph and bettered that mark in the decider with another unstoppable performance.

Taylor’s opponent in the final, Dutch thrower Michael Van Gerwen, had powered in seven

180s and three ton-plus checkouts as he defeated Brit Adrian Lewis 10-7 in their semi-final clash, but the change in pace in the final certainly did not help the Dutchman, who was unable to repeat the feat in the decider.
