OUR MISSION AND VISION
OUR MISSION IS ACHIEVED BY
OUR VISION:A community in which everyone
has access to sufficient
nutritious food.
DEAR FRIENDS,
3Karen Green, Chief Executive Officer Gary Elders, Board Chair
TOGETHER WE GIVE FAMILIES HOPE.
Wanda had ruptured three disks in her back disabling her. A food pantry helps her eat regularly. Marie has congestive heart failure and relies on our senior food boxes to survive. Jermaine and his wife rely on mobiles to stretch their paychecks to provide nutritious food for their children.
Fortunately, their stories and countless others have nourishing endings. For 33 years the staff, donors, volunteers, and agencies of Southeast Missouri Food Bank have worked to alleviate a lack of nutritious food in our service area.
Thanks to generous donors, more than 9.8 million meals were served to hungry men, women, and children in 2018. Our focus on nutritious food continues to grow as we’ve rescued and distributed more than 1 million pounds of donated produce. This food comes from local farmers through our Farm to Food Bank Program. Our partnership with Southeast Correctional Center and their restorative justice horticulture program excites us, too. We provide seeds and SECC donates the produce of their expanded, 7-acre farm.
With your help, nutritious foods fill the pantries and plates of neighbors. Backpacks for Friday, ABC Pantries, Senior Food Boxes, and Truck to Table Mobile Pantries remain strong programs. Together with the help of all our Hunger Heros, we continue to feed our community. Because you care, we've reached milestones that were unimaginable 33 years ago.
Solving hunger is a daunting task and we're so grateful for every contributor of food, funds, and time. We take hunger seriously and we're glad you're here to help us meet the needs of too many Missouri families.
Good stewardship of your gifts remains a priority. Once again the BBB accreditation and another 4-Star (highest) rating from Charity Navigator were received. We are in the top 10% of food banks and food assistance organizations nationwide for good stewardship practices. We work hard to earn your trust and support.
Thank you – your gifts helped, reached, and fed more in 2018.
Letter from our CEO and BOARD CHAIR

Accessing food is challenging, especially for families considered part of the working poor. To overcome work schedule barriers, most mobile distributions are held after 5 PM during the work week and on Saturdays, increasing clients' ability to access food and provide for themselves and their families. More than 2 million lbs. of food was distributed to over 42,000 families in 2018.
Truck to Table Mobile Food Pantry Program
In 2018, Truck to Table held 208 distributions.
An average of 203 families are served at each Mobile Distribution.
ABC School Mobile Pantry serves students in the most impoverished counties with some of the highest rates of children enrolled in the Free Breakfast & Lunch Program in Missouri.
The goal is to provide an accessible source of food to hungry children at a familiar location & safe environment.
Reaching children in need with nutritious food increases the likelihood of better health and developmental outcomes, resulting in higher academic achievement.
A Better Childhood School Mobile Pantry
ABC School Pantries serve 375 Families monthly.

In Southeast Missouri, 1 out of every 5 children goes to bed hungry. This represents 18,390 hungry children. While schools offer Free and Reduced Breakfast and Lunch Programs, providing food Monday through Friday, families often struggle to provide food during the weekends. Backpacks For Friday (BFF) responds to this need & provides food each school year weekend when other resources are not available. BFF is in 26 schools.
7
Backpacks For Friday (BFF) Program
572 children and their families receive food weekly.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (food stamps) is an important part of the solution to our community’s hunger crisis
Reliable access to food has a tremendous impact. Kids who benefit from food stamps graduate from high school 18% more often than children in similar circumstances who did not receive food stamps.
In 2018, 329 Individuals were provided with SNAP Application Assistance.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)& Food Resource Expansion to Support Health (FRESH)

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)TEFAP is a federal program that provides food commodities to Southeast Missourians in need of hunger relief. In 2018, TEFAP provided over 1.1 million pounds of nutritious food to food insecure households. 1 in 6 households struggle with food insecurity.
Approximately 1 out of 8 Missouri seniors is food insecure. Southeast Missouri Food Bank senior clients are three times more likely to have diabetes & high blood pressure. A healthy diet is critical in preventing chronic diseases and managing symptoms.
The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) supplements diets by providing monthly USDA commodities to low income seniors. In 2018, CSFP provided over 1.5 million pounds of food to vulnerable seniors.
Thanks to Missouri Foundation for Health, Enterprise Foundation, and Prevention is Key Foundation for our FRESH Grant. FRESH provides select CSFP sites with a health component and additional produce.
FRESH enabled seniors to reduce their A1Cs by an average of 0.11% .
Additionally, 7.8% of seniors reduced their high blood pressure to within normal range (140/90 or less).
