It ended in 1453. It was a war between England and France. Since William The Conqueror, the kings of England controlled a lot of land in France. King Henry II, who became king of England in 1154, controlled northern France and south western France (Aquitaine). He had more land in France than the king of France. But between 1202 and 1214, the French retook a lot of this land. However, in 1328, the king of France died. He had no children. The king of England, Edward III, wanted to be the new king of France. Battle of Crecy - 1346 One of the most important battles of the war was the Battle of Crecy. It was on 26th August 1346. The English had about 15,000 soldiers. The French had about 25,000 soldiers. But the English longbowmen killed thousands of French soldiers and the English won. England now controlled northern France. The Peace of Bretigny - 1360 The king of England said he would stop trying to become king of France. In return, the king of France gave him more land in south-western France. The war started again in 1369. In the 1370s, the French retook a lot of land from the English. By 1376, the English only controlled a few towns on the coast, including Calais, Bordeaux and Cherbourg. The Battle of Agincourt - 1415 The English king, Henry V, started the war again in 1413. In 1415 he won a big battle at Agincourt against the French king, Charles VI. Henry then took Paris. The Peace of Troyes - 1420 The French said that Henry V could become king of France when Charles VI died. But Henry V died before Charles VI died. When Charles VI died, Henry V’s son became king of France. But the new king was just a baby. The French people wanted Charles VI’s son, the Dauphin, to be king. Joan of Arc Joan of Arc was a French girl. She wanted the Dauphin to become king. She led the French armies against the English. She took the Dauphin to Rheims. On 16 th July 1429, the Dauphin became king. But eventually, the English caught Joan and they killed her. End of the War The French retook Paris in 1436 and gradually pushed the English out of France. Joan of Arc
