HOLIDAY BLUESTHEY’RE NOT A CHRISTMAS THINGBy CPT William G Thompson, LCSW, BCD, 568th MCGA BHO

Many people would have you believe that the term “holiday blues” means that depression and suicide ideation and similar negative emotions increase over the holiday season - the time period between Thanksgiving and the New Year. In actuality, the “holiday blues” do not really hit until mid-January. Some research suggests it may even have a delayed onset and not show signs until spring. Part of the depression that some people suffer after the holidays is due to what is called “seasonal depression.” Basically, this is because of the shortened periods of daylight that come before, during and after the winter solstice, which occurs between in December 20 and 25 each year. This time period, combined with the number of people working indoors with no window facing out, leads to a decreased exposure to sunlight, thus contributing to seasonal depression. With all the holiday activities and extra social support during the holidays, individuals aren’t really hit by the affects of shorter days until after the festivities come to a close.

During the holiday season, there are many outreach programs, functions, parties and community activities to help people that may be struggling with depression. Many of these programs fade or even come to a complete stop at the beginning of the New Year. This leaves people feeling vulnerable and possibly alone. In my 20- plus years of working in the mental health field never once did I see a rise in suicide, depression or psychiatric hospitalizations during the holiday season. Actually, the CDC says that it is public media that fuels this myth about holiday depression. i One Danish study actually showed a 40 percent improvement in mental health during the holiday season but there is a quick decline

in mental health after the New Year when all the support is gone.ii So it is a false belief that suicide and/or depression increases over the holidays. Actually, the suicide rates actually do not increase until the spring.iii

This article is not just for those who may be suffering from the “holiday blues” but also for the friends of the ones who may not have great social support after the holidays. First, let me say I know it’s too late to tell you to watch your budget during your holiday spending. If you’re anything like me, that never works anyway. But you can set a budget for paying back any bills you created during the holidays and stick to that. Make sure that it is a realistic and doable for you, a budget that you will follow.

Next, don’t be surprised if you feel a little let down or alone after the holidays. This is to be expected. We all get caught up in the excitement of the holidays, much like a good party. We enjoy it and hate to clean up afterward but miss it when it’s over. So accept there may be some drop in your level of overall happiness after the holidays.

Once you have accepted the letdown, look at benefits of it. You will have less social responsibilities and more time - time to slow down and do things for yourself, by yourself. In short, take time to rest and take a breather. Part of this “taking time for self” includes not being too hard on yourself regarding New Year’s resolutions. Setting new goal(s) for the New Year has shown positive outcomes as long as they are not set too high. Set an ultimate goal with several small objectives to reach along the way so that you can feel good about your small achievements that are part of the larger goal.

Next, do not isolate yourself too much now that the New Year has started. Also, if you see a friend who seems to be separating from the rest of the group, invite them back into the fold. If you are the one alone, reach out to different groups till you find one with whom you are comfortable.

26

Page 27: Humphreys Happenings - January 2015

During the holidays, we look forward to the next party, the next Santa sighting and the next outing - whatever the next “activity” is. We are always looking forward to something during the holidays. Now that the New Year is here, make sure you are making plans to be involved in something that helps you continue to look forward to the future. One of the tours from Outdoor Recreation, Discover Seoul or the USO/Koridoor would be a good way to accomplish this. Plan small outings or activities that are enjoyable.

Remember that you can always make the power of choices weigh in your favor - choose to eat better and stay active. Some good foods that have been shown to help counter depression are bananas, poultry, dairy, produce and peas. Basically, you will want to eat foods that have tryptophan. Tryptophan is used by the body to make niacin, a B vitamin that is important for digestion, skin, and nerves and serotonin. Serotonin is a brain chemical that plays a large role in mood and can help to create a feeling of well-being and relaxation. “When levels of serotonin are high, you’re in a better mood, sleep better, and have a higher pain tolerance,” says Elizabeth Somer, MA, RD, author of numerous nutrition books, including Eat Your Way to Happiness. Tryptophan is needed for the body to produce serotonin. Serotonin

is used to make melatonin, a hormone that helps to control your sleep and wake cycles. Also, even if you’re in the military, make sure you’re getting enough exercise. Don’t do just the minimal but enough to help both your body and your mind remain in shape and sharp.

Lastly, there are two things that may sound silly, uncomfortable or simple, but for many, they’re actually quite challenging. The first thing is to think positively for the year ahead. If you think the next year is going to be the worst year ever, guess what, it will be! However, if you think it will be a good year, it may not be the best one in your life, but it will be better than choosing to suffer all year. Lastly, as uncomfortable as it may be, if you feel that you are just not able to pull yourself up out of depression, seek help. You can talk to your chaplain, MFLC, Army One Source or Behavioral Health at the Camp Humphreys Medical/Dental Clinic. The holiday blues do not have to be a part of your New Year in 2015.

I won’t lie. If I find a truly awesome place to eat, I won’t write about it. Don’t be shocked. It’s not just me. All foodie writers do it. It becomes like a sneaky little secret that only you want to revel in. But then, there are some places that are TOO good to keep a secret. And that is the type of place I am going to write about today. So hopefully you all forgive me for it? Let’s still be friends?

Everyone has their favorite Korean fried chicken place. It may be KyoChon. It may be the place in the Humphreys Ville. It may even be some local joint near where

you live. However, today, I am going to put my foot down and say I have found THE best Korean Fried Chicken place EVER. (For now).

Chicken Phong is open 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. and is located around a residential area. So, even though they serve alcohol, what I like about this place is that families can go here and enjoy a good dinner of fried chicken, any day of the week.

Now let me tell you, Chicken Phong was so good, they had my friends, my husband and I going right back there a few days later! What do I love about this fried chicken shop?

1. Like any good Korean fried chicken place, they fry up your chicken, made to order.

2. They have a pretty fancy shmancy restaurant to dine in.

3. They give you individual tongs to pick up chicken without using grubby germ-engulfed hands.

All forAll forthe Chickenthe Chicken

By Annie Edwards

Page 53: Humphreys Happenings - January 2015

4. They have a drink holder built into the table, designed to keep your beverage cold or hot, while you eat. So if you’re not a big drinker and usually order just one drink with your meal, it’s perfect!

5. The menu offers a LOT of chicken options. Baked chicken. Fried chicken. And it also offers pizza. Not the bready, thick crust, overly-cheesy kind. The thin crust, perfectly topped, ‘don’t hate myself after a slice’ kind.

Now for the chicken: the chicken has THE most perfect crispyness level. Even with a little sauce on top, it remains crispy. Light. The breading is thin, perfectly seasoned and addictive! The chicken is soft, moist and so flavorful; it makes me want to go there for dinner tonight.

We ordered the Black Pepper Fried Chicken and oh my goodness, we were in heaven. The black pepper sauce had a good balance between spicy and sweet. It wasn’t a thick starchy sauce, which can be a little overwhelming and messy; it was light and got soaked up by the breading but didn’t compromise that crispyness. Oh, that crispyness. This chicken is better than ‘finger lickin’ good’ and will definitely leave a lasting impression that will make you come back for more.

Since our first visit we have since indulged in their Yellow Lemon Chicken, crispy and sweet, their Onion Chicken, which had thinly sliced onions served on top of the fried chicken with a balsamic drizzle. Each time

we have ordered the Black Pepper Chicken as a must, and then another type of chicken off of the menu. Oh, and did I mention there is only four of us when we go? Go with friends, order the Black Pepper Chicken and explore the rest of the chicken menu. Don’t forget to let me know your verdict once you have tried it.

The name of the restaurant from the outside is in Korean, but has an English menu. Chicken Phong sits on the corner of a pretty cutesy food street and is not too far away from Pyeongtaek City Hall. We plugged the address into our GPS and on the drive up there, we discovered some pretty awesome cafes and even more restaurants to try out in the area.

Gangwon Province is located along the eastern coast of the peninsula. Gangwon-

do is surrounded by the East Sea to the east, Gyeonggi-do in the west, parts of

Chungcheong-do and Gyeongsang-do to the south and North Korea in the north. It

is cold and largely dry during the winter times as influenced by the continental

climate, while it is hot and humid with lots of rain during the summer as influenced

by the oceanic climate.

Gangwon-do Food Gangwon-do is mountainous with

high mountains and plateaus. Dry-field farming is more prevalent than

rice farming. Therefore, plenty of corn, buckwheat and potatoes are produced.

Acorns, arrowroot and many wild greens are available from the mountains as well.

Gangwon-do cuisine is rather plain and simple and not as luxurious as the food

in Seoul. But it is pleasant in taste.

Sancheoneo hoe (산천어 회): raw cherry salmon, or masou salmon

Sancheoneo are migratory fish that swim downstream to the ocean and return

upstream to fresh water to reproduce. The salmon raised in Hwacheon are very fresh and have a slightly chewy texture. They contain elements of amino acids,

fatty acids and vitamins C and E that help those consuming them recover

from fatigue. Sancheoneo hoe

Ogolgye (오골계): marinated Silkie chicken cooked over an open flameOgolgye or Silkie chicken, a breed of

poultry with fluffy feathers and black skin, is well known as being a health food.

Charcoal-grilled ogolgye came into being some 20 years ago when a lot of restaurants

started grilling marinated Silkie chicken over charcoals. The Silkie chickens raised

in Yanggu-gun are fed with fresh and clean wild plants. The meat is a bit more tender

than other Silkie chickens and has less of a fishy taste.

Sundubu jjigae (순두부 찌게):

soft tofu stewSundubu jjigae is a hot and spicy stew

made from the clean water of the Seoraksan Mountains and salt from the East Sea and Korean-style, uncurdled silken tofu. It also contains seafood, mushrooms, onions and

gochujang (a Korean savory chili pepper paste). Sundubu (pure tofu) has the softest

texture among tofu. And it has a mild, sleek and delicious flavor.

Chuncheon Dakgalbi (춘천 닭갈비):

Korean stir-fried chicken with vegetablesDak galbi is a popular Korean dish generally

made by sauteeing chicken in a gochujang (chili pepper paste)-based sauce with sliced

cabbage, scallions, onions, perilla leaves, sweet potato and tteok (rice cakes) together on a hot plate. It is a local specialty food for the city of Chuncheon, Gangwon Province,

where dak galbi originates.

Ojingeo Sundae (오징어 순대): stuffed squid

This is a specialty of Sokcho. The inner organs and legs of a squid are removed

and the remaining body is skinned. Mung bean sprouts, squid’s legs, onions, tofu and peppers are all diced, seasoned and mixed with eggs. This mixture is stuffed inside the

squid and the squid is tied with threads and steamed. The result is a flavorful, light and

chewy treat.
