Humanists@Work (HumWork) is a UC-wide graduate career initiative designed and organized by the University of California Humanities Research Institute and funded by the Modern Language Association’s “Connected Academics” Mellon grant. HumWork aims to enact culture change by making alternative career paths visible and career training accessible. HumWork organizes Graduate Career Workshops twice a year at different locations around the state with free registration and travel grants available to UC humanities and humanistic social science graduate students. The workshops are coordinated with the assistance of the Graduate Advisory Committee, a 5 person committee of UC humanities graduate students, selected yearly, who help lead the initiative while receiving hands-on programming experience. Each summer, HumWork hosts one paid, eight-week Humanities Internship to provide intensive programming and administrative training. And looking beyond the PhD, HumWork is developing relationships with two language or literature departments on each campus to pilot graduate tracking programs that identify the variety of career outcomes a humanities PhD can produce. humwork.uchri.org @humanistsatwork
