Letter from Executive Director

I have been fortunate and blessed to be a part of The Humane Society Naples for the past ten years.

We have all watched our shelter grow and save more and more animals’ lives year after year. As a

community, we should be proud of our successes and, more importantly, heartened by the tens of thousands of lives we have saved over 54 years.

Our no-kill shelter has really changed over the years and certainly

for the better. I credit the wisdom and foresight of our Board of

Directors who had the courage to take the organization to a higher

level. Of course this has only been possible with the generosity of our wonderful donors, supporters and adopters. Thousands of families

have contributed to help us help more animals.

Our state-of-the-art main shelter provides a wonderful temporary home for thousands of homeless pets every year and undoubtedly

a more interactive experience for visitors and adopters. Countless

shelters and rescues from around the country have toured our facilities

to learn of our successful approach.

Three years ago we opened our satellite adoption center at the Coastland Mall to instant success. The

Mall averages around 950 adoptions a year and serves as a marketing tool to folks who have never heard

of The Humane Society Naples.

Last year, through the Fund-a-Need auction at our annual Pet Lovers Gala, we raised the money to purchase a mobile adoption bus. It’s another great marketing tool for even more exposure for pet

adoptions. Look for it around town at local businesses and at parades and events throughout the year!

Also last year we purchased, in part through a generous donation from Patty and Jay Baker, our new

intake facility off Oakes Blvd. With eight acres, the potential for this property is limitless and we hope

to add facilities for a puppy nursery, a kitten nursery, a disease quarantine building, and my favorite, a

24-hour “assisted living facility” for older animals in recovery and hospice care.

I have no doubt The Humane Society Naples will continue to be a leader in animal welfare and rescue

into the future. Together, we can make it happen.

Congratulations to you and to the Naples community for building a better shelter for homeless pets in

Southwest Florida!

As always, For the Animals,

Michael Simonik Executive Director

With the recent completion of a

$4.5 million shelter renovation project, The Humane Society

Naples is the only

facility of its kind in

South Florida. Dogs

and cats are housed in

spacious state-of-the-

art rooms which allow

them to transition

seamlessly into the

shelter environment

and into a forever

loving home.

2,772 Adoptions in 2013The vision of The Humane Society Naples is to create a community

where 100% of all adoptable animals find loving homes and no animals will be euthanized because of pet overpopulation.

In addition to the main shelter located on Airport-Pulling Road in Naples

(adjacent to the Naples Municipal Airport), The Humane Society Naples

operates a satellite adoption center in the Coastland Mall and an animal

intake campus off Oakes Boulevard in North Naples.

Humane Animal Clinic

Spay & Neuter Efforts

Emergency Pet Care Fund

The Humane Animal Clinic is open to the public and offers full-service veterinary care for all of your pet’s needs, from teeth cleaning and checkups to major surgery.

Private donors also support the Emergency Pet Care Fund,

the Mulligan Fund and the Crocker Family Fund, which

provide discounted veterinary assistance to needy pet owners

in order to promote responsible pet ownership.

Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100 percent effective

method of birth control for dogs and cats. At The Humane

Society Naples, all pets adopted from our shelters are neutered to help reduce pet overpopulation and unwanted

litters in our community. In addition, we operate a donor-supported spay/neuter assistance program (SNAP), which

provides discounted or free spay/neuter services to needy

pet owners in our community.

This restricted fund, not covered by operating resources,

is completely funded by generous donors that direct their

support to help pets with emergency veterinary needs that

go above and beyond our normal pet rescue efforts.

These pets are just a few this year that could not have a second chance at a great life without your support of our Emergency Pet Care Fund:

Mona was a loving, playful American Bulldog mix that came to The Humane Society this year when her owners could no longer care for her. She suffered from entropion, or inward folding eyelid tissue, and was living in chronic pain. With surgical care from The Humane Society Naples and Dr. Jason Eisele of Specialized Veterinary Services, Mona is happy in her new home and no longer suffering from the condition.

Sparkplug was brought into The Humane Society Naples by a good samaritan that found him stuck inside a car’s engine. The kitten

was covered in oil, fleas and had a fractured rear leg. After receiving veterinary care and rehab services, Sparkplug found his forever home

and now enjoys playing with toys and climbing cat trees.

Thank You To Our Amazing Volunteers

55,297 volunteer hours given by over 600 extraordinary people

who enriched the lives of our animals, represented us at special events, served on our Board of Directors and provided the support we need to serve our animals.

Foster Care Program

1,108 animals went through our foster program

As a part of our mission at The Humane Society Naples, reducing the amount of time an animal spends in our shelter saves us space to rescue

more homeless pets. Being in a foster home provides a stress-free environment for the animal to grow, mature, recuperate and be socialized. This helps prevent these animals from getting sick, especially pregnant and nursing

mothers that are raising newborns and babies too young to be on their own.

Mobile Adoption Vehicle

Coastland Mall Adoption Center & Oakes Campus

Thanks to our wonderful supporters, The Humane Society Naples recently unveiled its new Animal Transport and Mobile Adoption Vehicle to the public on July 31, 2013!

The vehicle allows for our no-kill pet shelter and adoption center to safely transport multiple animals from other shelter settings, as well as participate in public events and showcase adoptable pets to the public. This ability allows our shelter to rescue more pets from kill shelters and ultimately adopt more orphaned pets into forever homes.

The Animal Transport and Mobile Adoption Vehicle was made possible due to the generosity of many donors that attend The Humane Society Naples’ annual Pet Lovers Gala. The vehicle was presented as the shelter’s greatest need at last year’s event. Dozens of event participants committed the funds required to purchase and outfit the new vehicle.Major donors of the vehicle, as well as some of their pets, are showcased on the side of the vehicle.

The Humane Society Naples is unique in the fact that our further progress has been limited by a condition of our own success: the space needed to receive pets and give them the care needed to prepare them for adoption to the public. Our intake and rehabilitation space at the main shelter, completed in July 2010, was designed to meet the expected demand at our beautiful new adoption center. Since then, we have realized tremendous success with adoptions at our Coastland Mall Adoption Center and our main shelter intake space has become inadequate to meet our growing needs.

The Oakes Campus property, acquired in 2013, will have the ability to meet our need for intake and rehabilitation space when fully renovated. The eight-acre site, procured in part with a very generous donation from Jay & Patty Baker, will allow us to continually provide the highest quality care and love to pets that are not yet healthy enough to be placed for adoption to the public.

With the addition of this dedicated intake and rehabilitation site, our shelter and its associated adoption centers in Naples will be able to maximize the number of orphaned pets’ lives we save in our community. In effect, we will move closer to the goal of eliminating unnecessary euthanasia for companion pets in Southwest Florida and serving as a model community for the entire country when it comes to compassion and service to pets in need.

Charity Navigator has awarded The Humane Society Naples its coveted four-star rating several years in a row, indicating that The Humane Society Naples “exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities.” Only four other non-profit organizations in Naples are rated as a four-star charity.

FinancialsThe Humane Society Naples is 100% donor-supported; we are not affiliated with any national organization (such as The Humane

Society of the United States or the ASPCA) nor do we receive local, state or federal funds. Thanks to your very generous continued support,

we are able to make a tremendous positive difference in the lives of thousands of pets and the families that love and care for them.

Wags and purrs – thank you!

The Humane Society Naples EventsFrom Tuxes to Tennis ShoesOur calendar is full of many engaging events. Each is built around a simple philosophy, they must help us:• Raise money to save lives• Increase awareness of our services and our animals• Create moments of joy

Our 13th annual Pet Lovers Gala reached new heights this year at a new venue, the Naples Botanical Garden. With a sold out crowd of more than 350 of our most cherished supporters we raised over $1.9 million in support of our no-kill shelter.

Our 15th annual Tea & Fashion Show was an un-fur-gettable afternoon of furry fun, fashion and fine food benefiting the orphaned pets awaiting their forever homes at The Humane Society Naples. This event raised over $50,000 for the Humane Society Naples.

Run for the Paws 5K is an annual tradition supported by Gulf Coast Runners. The 3.1 mile course wraps around the Naples Municipal Airport and bonds together a pack of over 750 walkers and runners, along with their pets, raising money and awareness for our homeless furbabies.

We are incredibly grateful for the support of so many animal lovers in our community who unite throughout the year to hold their own events and activities to support the animals. From birthday gift donations to supply drives - individuals, businesses, neighborhood associations and school groups help us raise monetary donations and awareness for the animals.
