Advancing multi-sectoral response to gender-based violence in Turkmenistan

Advocacy dialogue for advancing the concept of the multi-sectoral response (MSR) to gender-based violence (GBV) was held by UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund with the Inter-agency Commission on implementation of international obligations of Turkmenistan in the field of human rights and humanitarian law, and its Working group. The purpose of the meeting was to sensitize the national representatives about importance, benefits and challenges of the MSR to gender-based violence, and to inform on the regional and global initiatives and coordination mechanisms in this area.

UNFPA supports regionalizing the perinatal health services in Turkmenistan

Progress review and development of recommendations on regionalization of maternal and perinatal care was the focus of the round-table, which gathered the representatives of the Ministry, velayat obstetricians and gynecologists. Dr. Angela Turcan, UNFPA international expert and Director of the perinatal center in Chisinau, facilitated the round-table and presented Moldova’s successful experience in regionalization.

Assistance in preparations of national report on Economic, Social, Cultural, Rights

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held a two-day workshop with the Working Group of Interministerial Committee on UN Treaty Body obligations of Turkmenistan on preparation of the second national periodic report on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR).

The main purpose of the workshop was to identify methodology of the preparation of the report according to the previously received concluding observations from the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR)

More than 50 Reps of Government and Civil Society of Turkmenistan Meet First Time to Discuss Cooperation Prospects

The United Nations Development Programme jointly with the National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan held two-day Round-table "Role of public associations for sustainable development".

The purpose of the roundtable is to promote meaningful participation of the civil society in sustainable development and strengthen partnership with the Government. The roundtable is held within UNDP’s “Assistance in implementation of the National Human Rights Action Plan of Turkmenistan 2016-2020” project and is co-funded by the Embassy of Germany.

UN promotes youth participation in Turkmenistan University Students debate whether youth should monitor implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

On the eve of the UN Day marked worldwide on 24 October, the UN family and the Government of Turkmenistan have held a students’ debate for the UN Debate Cup. The debate motion was: “Can youth monitor the implementation of SDGs?” The event was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The five teams from the Turkmen State University named after Magtymguly, National Institute of World Languages named after Azadi, Institute of International Relations of the MFA of Turkmenistan, International University for Humanities and Development, and National Institute of Economy and Management expressed their views on how they can contribute into the SDGs agenda.

Realizing the full leadership and creative potential of Turkmen youth

UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund supports Y-PEER network in promoting healthy living, leadership and gender equality among peers

More than 26,000 young people, including adolescents, in Turkmenistan had an opportunity to reflect on their lifestyle and increase their knowledge on healthy and responsible living through peer-to-peer edutainment activities since the launch of Y-PEER movement in Turkmenistan. Y-PEER volunteers, UNFPA-supported Youth Peer Education Network in Turkmenistan, have kept busy promoting healthy living and gender equality among their peers, despite the challenges of the year.

Y-PEER lead series of events and campaigns to empower young people using the peer-to-peer approach with the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices. UNFPA recognizes peer-to-peer approach as one of the most effective techniques for teaching life skills to young people. It is based on a theory that young people are more likely to discuss issues relating to adolescent reproductive health with their peers.

The campaign has begun on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and will last until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

Starting on 25 November, a "Selfie Booth" was set up at the UN Turkmenistan, where all staff, partners and guests of the building were invited to take selfies with an Orange ribbon and important messages to end violence and discrimination against women and girls.

UNCT Health Group initiated social campaign HANDS UP FOR #HIVPREVENTION, UN staff members had photo and information session on HIV stigma. Results of the UN Cares Survey and PEP Kit availability/guidance were presented.

UN has held a local campaign to raise awareness on human rights. The information booth was installed where UN staff and visitors of the UN building could complete the statement “I have human right no matter …”. The booth also included screening of the UNDP and UN videos on human rights which were displayed during the whole day. discussion with the staff on what human rights are, the purpose of the Rights Upfront initiative and 2016 #standup4humanrights campaign.

State of World Population 2016 Report presented in Ashgabat The State of World Population (SWOP) 2016 Report titled “10: How our future depends on a girl at this decisive age” was launched in Ashgabat on 14 December at the National Museum of Fine Arts. The Vernissage of the Photo exhibition followed the Report Launch, featuring the teenage girls from all parts of Turkmenistan, their dreams and aspirations. The Report was presented at the ceremony, which was attended by the Turkmen national partners, representatives of the UN agencies and international organizations, the diplomatic corps, university professors and students, as well as the civil society and national and international mass media. The report was also launched globally in more than 100 countries. Read more>

Photo exhibition reveals the aspiration of young girls in Turkmenistan and abroad UNFPA Photo exhibition “Following my dream – How our future depends on a girl at this decisive age” The Photo exhibition featured many faces and individual stories of girls from many parts of Turkmenistan and around the world, as well as their dreams and aspirations. Proud fathers of their daughters are also part of the photo exhibition, as the exposition includes the works of the Photo competition finalists, announced earlier this year by UNFPA jointly with Tajikistan Country Office, with the theme "I'm proud of my daughter!" Safe City and Transportation for Women and Girls The Global Sustainable Transport Conference held in Ashgabat on 26-27 November 2016. Key stakeholders from Governments, UN system and other international organizations, the private sector, and civil society more than from 50 countries participated in a dialogue that emphasizes the integrated and cross-cutting nature of sustainable transport and its multiple roles in supporting the achievement of the SDGs. Launching of the international campaign - HeForShe UN Women together with Women’s Union of Turkmenistan held an activity «Family wellbeing –wellbeing of society» to launch HeForShe campaign. This activity was devoted to the campaign HeForShe, a solidarity movement for the advancement of women’s rights and engagement and encouraging men and boys to actions against negative inequalities faced by women and girls. The start to the campaign was given on September 20, 2014 by the Goodwill Ambassador of UN Women Emma Watson at the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York. Per Watson’s call the first 100,000 men joined to the campaign within three days. Read more>
