artisan projects that redefine theuse of found objects with a newpurpose, in a society reigned bymass production.

With the objective ofpromoting independent creation,

cultural exchange andopening a realm for discussion andexhibition, we've prepared aprogram for a two-day event basedin Monterrey, Mexico. HUMoffers workshops, round tables andconferences that showcase the mostavant-garde proposals of indiedesign all of them central to theHUM mindset (DIY, bricolage).

HUM/DIY, the avant-garde twistof Arts & Crafts

Some time ago, when inMexico we heard the word “craft”,the semantics immediately madeus think of pieces with cultural orreligious tradition that were relatedto “Sacred Art” or to indigenoushandicrafts. Nonetheless, in a timein which visuality has transcendedthe artistic scene to proliferate by

m e a n s o f s t y l i z edconsumer objects andgraphic design in the mass media,everyday more designers, artistsand artisans seem to resist thestandardized aesthetic that leadsto mass consumerism with thec r e a t i o n o f u n i q u e

h a n d m a d e p i e c e sconfronting the paradox of beinga consumer object yet “authentic”.

We’ve observed even in thelocal scene, how the number ofdesigners and independent artistshas g rown exponent ia l l y,generating hybrid products:supermarket bags, designed andcustomized as an environmentalistcampaign; book objects that mixplastic and literary disciplines;
