Hult’s Grand Opening in Shanghai hosts Jim RogersJim Rogers, founder of the Quantum Fund with George Soros and creator of the Rogers International Commodity Index (RICI), gave a fascinating speech at Hult’s Grand Opening in Shanghai. He shared his perspectives on life, business school, running a hedge fund, and his time as the first hedge fund manager to drive around the world through 116 countries.

Rogers is bullish on Asia“There are spectacular opportunities in Asia today,” Rogers told the crowd excitedly, citing the investment opportunities in Myanmar and North Korea. Rogers believes that change is imminent in these new frontiers and urged business school students to seize opportunities as they arise. Rogers, an outspoken proponent of the free market, believes that change is imminent in the world economy that will cause China to dip alongside the West.

Importance of ChinaNevertheless, Rogers urges the audience to learn Mandarin. His two young daughters are learning the language of the future, and he and his wife moved from New York to Asia to take advantage of this historic shift to China. He sees more promise in China than India, which he regards as beset by a large debt to GDP ratio, corruption, and bureaucracy. However, Rogers points to China’s decision to keep the value of its currency low as a mistake that is causing distortions and inflation in the Chinese economy. But although China will have its share of problems, he is very optimistic about its long-term ability to be a global and far-sighted power.

I chose the Shanghai campus because of the importance of Chinese economy today. I wanted to see how it works in a direct manner. It was a really constructive experience.

Inmaculada Mora DuranSpanish, MBA 2011

Hult’s international outlook helped me to find the job and cultural exposure I was looking for. Thanks to Hult, I was able to demonstrate to my new employer, MasterCard Advisors, that I had the capabilities to understand different cultures and address the needs of a global client. Hult represented my bridge between feeling local and being truly international.

Based in London, I rotated to Shanghai… An amazingly active and modern city in the heart of China. The mix of Chinese history and modern technology is amazing. Finally, the power lying in China, the power to make things happen, and the efficiency this country has promises to make China a leading country in the coming years...

Benoît Larrouturou French, MBA 2011

Hult is a melting pot of different cultures, habits, and backgrounds, merging together in accordance with the dynamic and international spirit of the school. We lived in a completely different environment through educational and professional field trips all around China, in addition to the outstanding and numerous electives offered. The school organization, facilities and services were excellent. The Hult staff took care of us, creating the perfect atmosphere to maximize our learning experience.

Nicola AlloccaItalian, MBA 2010

Studying in Shanghai was an amazing experience for me as a business professional, and I will be able to leverage the knowledge I gained throughout my career. Day to day activities such as catching a taxi or ordering dinner were always a challenge, but showed me the importance of interacting with locals and figuring out different ways to communicate. It was also fascinating to see firsthand how companies do business in China; you better start building relationships now if you’re interested in doing business in the region!

Alexander FranklinAmerican, MBA 2010

I started my program in Dubai and then took my electives in Module D in Shanghai campus. Both Dubai and Shanghai were completely unknown environments for me. I wanted to be in cities which are out of my comfort zone. I lived my life in India which is the world’s largest democratic nation. Staying in Dubai (which is a constitutional monarchy) and Shanghai (which is the financial capital of a country following Communism) gave exposed me to a completely different angle of looking at things in terms of business and otherwise

“My favourite professor was Patrick Courtinit the Shanghai campus. He was phenomenal. Learning negotiations had been an interest of mine and he delivered an effective combination of lecture and practice. This really solidified understanding the concept and being practical by actually using it. The class was four hours long and I felt it was too short. Amazing”.

Mark Manglicmot, American/Filipino, MBA 2011
