    Overview Hindustan Unilever Limited(HUL) is India'slargest Fast moving Consumer Goods Companywith a heritage of over 75 years in India andtouches the lives of two out of three Indians.

    HUL is a subsidiary of Unilever, one of the worlds leadingsuppliers of fast moving consumer goods with strong local roots inmore than 100 countries across the globe.

    With over 35 brands spanning 20 distinct categories such assoaps, detergents, shampoos, skin care, toothpastes, and waterpurifiers etc. The annual HUL sales of about 44 billion in 2011.Unilever has about 52% shareholding in HUL.

    Lakm, Dove,Clinic Plus, Sunsilk, Pepsodent, Closeup, Axe, BrookeBond, Bru, Knorr, Kissan, Kwality Walls and Pureit. The Company has over 16,000 employees and hasan annual turnover of around Rs.19, 401 crores(financial year 2010 - 2011).

    History

    In the summer of 1888, visitors to the Kolkata harbour noticedcrates full of Sunlight soap bars, embossed with the words"Made in England by Lever Brothers". With it, began an era of

    marketing branded Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG)In 1931, Unilever set up its first Indian subsidiary,Hindustan Vanaspati Manufacturing Company, followedby Lever Brothers India Limited (1933) and United

    Traders Limited (1935).

    These three companies merged to form HUL in November1956.

    The erstwhile Lipton's links with India were forged in1898. Unilever acquired Lipton in 1972, and in 1977Lipton Tea (India) Limited was incorporated.Pond's (India) Limited had been present in India since1947. It joined the Unilever fold through an international

    acquisition of Chesebrough Pond's USA in 1986.

    In 1993, it acquired the Kissan business from the UBGroup and the Dollops Icecream business fromCadbury India.Finally, BBLIL merged with HUL, with effect from January 1,1996. The internal restructuring culminated in the merger ofPond's (India) Limited (PIL) with HUL in 1998

    In January 2000, in a historic step, the government decided toaward 74 per cent equity in Modern Foods to HUL, thereby

    beginning the divestment of government equity in public sectorundertakings (PSU) to private sector partners.In 2003, HUL acquired the Cooked Shrimp and PasteurisedCrabmeat business of the Amalgam Group of Companies, aleader in value added Marine Products exports.

    In 2007, the Company name was formally changed toHindustan Unilever Limited after receiving theapproval of share holders during the 74th AGM on 18May 2007.On 17th October 2008 , HUL completed 75 yearsof corporate existence in India

    HUL have many strengths. It emphasizes internal

    growth, to achieve higher volumesby renovating existing products, and innovating newproducts. Another strength thatHUL has is that they are low cost operators. This allowsthem to not only beat thecompetition by producing low cost products, but byalso edging ahead with low operating costs. Onestrength that they have is their brand recognition. Oneof their main goals has been to deliver brands that

    consumers trust and value and they have succeeded.Another strength they have is their distribution.

    Parent support - HUL India has a strong supportfrom its parent company, which is theworlds largest processed food and beveragecompany, with a presence in almost everycountry. The company has access to the parents

    Brand strength - In India, HUL has some very strongbrands like Rin, Wheel, Fair & Lovely, Ponds. Thesebrands are almost generic to their product categories.Product innovation - TheCompany has beencontinuously introducingnew products for

    its Indian patrons on afrequent basis, thusexpanding its productofferings.Product offerings - The Company has the option to

    expand its product folio byintroducing more brands which its parents are famedfor like breakfast cereals, SmartiesChocolates, Carnation, etc.

    Global hub - Since manufacturingof some products ischeaper in India than in otherSouth East Asian countries,HUL could become an export hub

    for the parent in certainproduct categories.
