ShelterThere’s a slightly cringe-worthy, if humorous, family anecdote that has stuck with me for nearly four decades: When I was a kid, we moved into a new home in the Miami suburbs, and one of the house’s quirkier features was that its living room, directly opposite the front door, was “sunken,” or a step below the main level of the rest of the house. The fact that it was entirely carpeted with plush, hunter green deep shag (very Miami) made the room that much more of an aesthetic anomaly.

An aunt from Michigan was our fi rst guest the day after we moved in and as she entered, my brother, rather dramatically, greeted her with a sweeping arm motion and said, “Please come in—and enjoy our sunken living room.” I thought I would die of embarrassment. Who says that? The joke was on me as my aunt told my brother how much

she loved the living room and went on and on about how beautiful and special it was. A step lower and the room is suddenly an architectural marvel? I wasn’t buying it. That childhood living room was my fi rst experience in consciously considering design. I’ve been paying attention ever since.

Early in my career, I was drawn to interior design publications—Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, House Beautiful—collectively known as “shelter” magazines in the industry. I used to smile at

that designation. Shelter had such a warm, comforting connotation that belied the high-wire intensity of many of the players in the category. But, no matter, shelter remains the perfect word to embody the stunning homes those glossy titles showcase month in, month out.

Like many of you, I suspect, my experience with interior design came out of knowing what I didn’t like, more than how to put together what I did like. Not unlike my relationship with art, I can’t actually paint what I want, but I can tell you what’s defi nitely not going up on my walls. For nearly two decades in Manhattan, in some half a dozen apartments, interior design wasn’t something I thought about a lot. How could I? My smallish living

spaces coupled with my luxe tastes weren’t the friend of a career-fi rst guy in NYC. Then, adulthood.

The fi rst important piece of furniture I bought—from the Museum of Modern Art no less—was the classic Herman Miller-designed

Eames Chair and Ottoman—and then the objets d’art and interior design avalanche began for me in earnest. What an exhilarating, if expensive, experience. Over time, I realized I loved mixing clean, modern rooms with antique, warm moments throughout. Not terribly original, perhaps, but very me. After years and years of aesthetic uncertainty, my house had fi nally become my shelter.

Shelter. What a beautiful word to come home to.

SeasonsBorn and raised in New Jersey, I’ve always relished the changing seasons we experience, and over the years I’ve noticed that each new season brings with it just enough transformation to keep this Aries on her toes. Every three months we’re handed the perfect occasion to refresh, reboot and reinvent. Similarly, HudsonMOD will never be spared this deep-rooted passion for constant change and improvement.

As we usher in spring, I can’t think of a more appropriate time for change. And few areas of our lives bring as much satisfaction as sprucing up our wardrobes with pieces from the collections of our favorite designers—BCBG’s stylists have become close acquaintances—

and revamping our homes with overhauls or simple additions to our beloved spaces.

With HudsonMOD’s Design Editor William Weathersby behind the wheel, we’ve captured two stunning interior design projects on either side of the Hudson River that provide inspiration through juxtaposition. Whether you’ve always been one to design with color, or prefer the more polished looks of a neutral palate, take a closer look into these two spectacular homes. You may be truly surprised where inspiration strikes you.

As the chill comes to an end, HudsonMOD had the wonderful opportunity to partner with Schultz Furriers as they wound down another

successful season of luxurious style at their Millburn location. As a toast to their VIP clientele and new, valued customers, we enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, wine and scotch tastings and offered guests a number of opportunities to win amazing raffl e prizes—with all proceeds directly benefi ting the New Jersey Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund, a charity that has become very important to all of us at HudsonMOD.

With fashion on our minds, HudsonMOD also had the distinct pleasure of uniting with Bloomingdale’s, The Mall at Short Hills for a runway show featuring picks from the Bloomingdale’s fashion offi ce that highlighted the upcoming season’s top trends and the best ways to pair our favorite pieces.

As you’ll fi nd in the pages of this issue, we’ve been paying close attention to the fashions that graced the runway during the recent Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and have even received advice from coveted designers and one very notable celebrity stylist. With all of this motivation to put our best foot forward—in this season’s hottest shoes, naturally—we hope you follow suit and stay in touch with HudsonMOD even after you’ve fi nished reading this issue. With upcoming events including the 50th anniversary celebrations for The Ferrari Club of America and a one-of-a-kind shopping soirée with DePasquale The Spa and Neiman Marcus on May 4, HudsonMOD continues to look for new ways to connect with our readers, friends and clients as we celebrate a Life Well Lived, Jersey style.

Flanked by farmland with timeless, weather-beaten barns, “Safe House,” designed by polish architect robert Konieczny, is in the pastoral countryside just outside of Warsaw and weds design with practicality, security with fluidity and unprecedented bunker-like attributes with a luxe country home. Simply put, there isn’t a home like this anywhere else on Earth. powered by an electric engine, the building works as—and is, in fact—a fine-tuned

machine. Block shutters 11-and-a-half feet wide by 9 feet high, as well as a movable steel truss wall, may be closed, turning the property into a rough looking cuboid that leaves the house, and the homeowner, heavily fortified at night, or in a moment’s notice.

But by simply flipping a switch, the entire bulwark—including the shutters, gates and draw bridge connecting the terrace—swings open, exposing an alluring modern home within, covered with translucent windows to soak up the sun. And during the unforgiving frigid polish winter when there is only two hours of sunlight, having walled apertures makes the home incredibly energy efficient as well.

Konieczny, who holds advanced degrees from Silesian University of Technology and the New Jersey institute of Technology, collaborated with various structural engineers, architects and interior designers to turn what he calls his “highly intelligent passive building” into a reality. Bridging the enormous gap between design and functionality, Safe House could very well be an expression of how luxury homes will change in the immediate future. Becoming smarter, stronger, and sexier, a less independent house and more a product of the environment to which it belongs. But, for now, Safe House stands very much alone.

Jaws dropped in her path as Halle Berry sauntered down the red carpet and towards the Dolby Theatre during the recent Academy Awards. looking as chic as we’ve come to expect she will, Berry was radiant in a strong-shouldered silver and

plunging neckline and cutouts, it was apparent that every detail of the dress was designed with her shape in mind—and it was. The Oscar winner’s dress had been specifically created for her by Donatella Versace to make Berry look like a classic Bond girl, and this undeniably gorgeous dress with a mysterious edge is the result. Though some may attribute Berry’s most memorable Bond moment to when she emerged from the ocean in a curve-hugging orange bikini in Die Another Day, we think this gown is a fitting homage to the glamour of the women who’ve graced the screen alongside 007.

Christine Ebersole believes in kismet and intuition. When she found herself in the late 1990s living in a newly renovated house in los angeles, after she and husband William moloney had just adopted three children, she realized there might be more to her life and career than chasing film and

Soon Ebersole was winning critical raves, and two Tony awards, for her memorable Broadway roles in 42nd Street and Grey Gardens. Preparing to board

the packed midday

flight—if your flight

leaves NyC at noon

and lA at 8 a.m.,

you tend to get rewarded

with the most celebrities in

attendance—i spot a superstar

television producer i know.

He’s completely lost in his

conversation on his iphone 5

as the flight attendant pours

his first of many (i know him

well) vodka sodas. As i walk

by unnoticed, i overhear him

threaten-whisper into his

phone: “You tell that famous

bitch, if she wants me to go

all Harvey Weinstein on her

ass, she has no idea who she’s

dealing with!” This is precisely

why i mock and love Hollywood

in equal measure, for that

cartoonish, ridiculous declaration from

the producer is said without a hint of

irony or self-awareness. That is how

lA folks in the entertainment business

regularly speak to and about each

other. i find it hilarious and a certain

sign—along with the inexplicable and

enduring career of Gary Busey—of

the looming apocalypse.

Some of the most remarkable

celebrity encounters i’ve had on

airplanes were with people i literally

never thought about until they sat

next to me. Who knew David Beckham

was so funny? Or Drew Barrymore

was so in love with love? Or Sigourney

Weaver was so tall (more legroom,

please!)? Or Joan rivers was so

thoughtful? Or Aaron Eckhart had the

ease, charm and looks of a young paul

Newman? Or Oscar-winning directors

Ang lee and mike Nicholls, on

separate occasions, were so genuinely

curious about me? Or Carnie Wilson

was so heartbreakingly candid? Or

mimi rogers was so chatty about

everything? Or Jake Gyllenhaal was

so, so dreamy? Or Simon Baker was

so damn nice? Or Cameron mathison

was so exposed; so honest you want

to hug him immediately after his latest

revelation? Or Tim mcGraw was so

comfortable in his religion-exposing

tight jeans? Or that Gayle King was the

best person ever? Or several Cosby

kids were still stigmatized by their

early success? Or mary-Kate Olsen

(or was it Ashley?) was swallowed

up in a blanket only to emerge to eat

bread? Or Stephen Dorff was spot-

on in his hilarious, chatty dissection

of Hollywood? Or Josh Groban

had a jaw-dropping, NC-17 sense of

humor? Or Kate Hudson’s infectious

laugh never leaves you? Or John

Krasinski telling you how funny you

are? Or missy Elliott’s serious motion

sickness? Or how Alec Baldwin’s

smarts knows no bounds? Or Javier

Bardem’s kindness transcends cross-

Atlantic exhaustion? Or how

Christopher Walken, after

several flights together, would

become my all-time favorite

celebrity plane companion and

conversationalist? Who knew?

To be clear, there’s a certain

dance—and three foolproof

rules—i follow when seated

next to a celebrity on a

long flight: let them initiate

engagement. Feign mild

disinterest in anything they’re

doing. make direct eye contact.

These seemingly simple rules

have always served me well.

By letting them start the

conversation, they’re in more

control of the situation and

therefore feel safer. Also, if they

detect that you’re not that into

them, their egos are somewhat

bruised—this is universally true

of anyone who relies on the public to

get paid (athletes very much included).

And, finally, by making eye contact

you’re reminding them that you’re a

real person outside the Hollywood

bubble of shifty-eyed sycophants

they’re barraged with on the daily. you

instantly become “a breath of fresh air”

and someone desirable with whom to

endure a cross-country trek. it helps if

you’re a little funny and hyperaware of

the celebrity you’re talking to (without

letting on too much). There you go,

my secret sauce of airplane celebrity

pas de deux revealed.

landing in the entertainment

capital of the world takes me back

to my familiar routine. Chatting with

the nicest Town Car driver on record—

and, of course, he was a regular years

ago on a mildly successful television

drama—i stare out the window toward

Now, one Karina Smirnoff awaits.

As a semi-regular viewer of Dancing

all-too-apparent desire for perfection.

I’ve always been fascinated by

perfectionists, and Smirnoff had all

the makings of the little girl in class

always got the “A.” But that little

girl didn’t always grow up to be the

happiest and that, too, interested

actually happy? And, frankly, why did

I care so much? Oh, but I did.

All of this subtext was suddenly

thrust to the fore a few months ago

when Smirnoff, paired with 2007

DWTS champion and multiple Olympic

gold medalist, Apolo Anton Ohno, for

the All-Stars edition, unexpectedly—

shockingly—fell hard during a diffi cult

hip-hop routine, and she broke

down in front of America on live

television. There stood the gorgeous

perfectionist, the over-achieving world

champion in a heap of emotion simply

because she, for once, had a crushing

human experience. Smirnoff was never

as interesting or compelling as she

was at that moment: Vulnerable, raw,

embarrassed. I couldn’t wait to see how

Smirnoff would handle her subsequent

dance with Ohno. Predictably, they

were never better—sharp, joyful,

connected—and I still believe that

televised public take-down may have

been the best thing to ever happen to

Smirnoff’s image. It made her just a

little more like the rest of us.

and became engaged on New year’s

Eve that year only to break up nine

months later prior to the wedding.

Just a month later, Smirnoff began

seeing professional baseball player

Brad penny and they, too, announced

their engagement a year later only

to call it quits in late 2011. For six

romance-filled, roller-coaster years,

Smirnoff became the inadvertent,

reluctant poster child for public

celebrity heartbreak. One is left

to wonder: is the famously strong

Smirnoff going to be OK after so much

personal disappointment? i came to

los Angeles to get some answers.

As is de rigueur these days, Karina

Smirnoff is a brand, an appealing one at

that. She’s the power behind workout

program DanceFiT-KS, has a natural

supplement vitamin line, Ketone’s and

has her own makeup line from Girlactik.

Smirnoff is also a seasoned “house

flipper” (savvy real estate investor)

and fulfilled one of her important

goals by finally winning Dancing With

The Stars and the coveted mirror

ball trophy during Season 13 paired

with soap opera star Jr martínez.

Smirnoff—as in all aspects of her life—

was no longer the bridesmaid, but the

bride. She buried her “Susan lucci

of professional dance” moniker once

and for all. Hallelujah!

Smirnoff is tiny, bubbly and a true

girl’s girl—real, sassy, blunt. When

Kryklyvyy—the couple dominated

ballroom dance competitions for four

years, winning an astounding five

US latin Ballroom Championships,

a World Trophy Championship, an

Asian Open Championship and

making a joint appearance in Shall We

Dance, a film starring Jennifer lópez

and richard Gere. Oh yes, there was

no denying that this charismatic,

driven ball of fire, this Karina Smirnoff,

was headed places—but where? To

Hollywood, of course.

Undoubtedly impressed with

Smirnoff’s stunning features and

impeccable dance credentials, the

producers of Dancing With The Stars

asked Smirnoff to join the third season

of the show and she was instantly

paired with suave television host

and actor (and agile mover) mario

lópez. They came in second place in

a disputed final—i don’t think there’s

any question in most people’s minds

that lópez and Smirnoff were by far

the best dancers in the competition.

Now, this is the part of the Karina

Smirnoff story that gets just a touch

sensitive: the famous men.

Smirnoff and lópez started dating

seriously during DWTS and broke up

two years later in 2008. A minute

later—or so it seemed—Smirnoff

began dating fellow Ukrainian dancer

(and the breakout male professional

on the show) maksim Chmerkovskiy

of the Soviet Union. By the time

Smirnoff started walking it was

evident she suffered from attention

deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

and her parents enrolled her in

myriad activities—figure skating,

gymnastics, ballet, piano, aerobics—

anything to exhaust their daughter

enough so she could sleep. prior

to her tenth birthday, Smirnoff

discovered her passion for ballroom

dancing and dropped everything else

to focus exclusively on this athletic,

demanding pursuit. Good move.

At 14, Smirnoff’s promising dancing

career was placed on hold when

her family immigrated to the US,

settling in New york City. As Smirnoff

focused on academics, dancing

wasn’t as big a priority while she

attended Christopher Columbus

High School and Bronx High School

of Science. After high school, the

overachieving Smirnoff enrolled at

Fordham University with a double

major in economics and information

systems programming with law

school very much in her sights. But

the lure of dance was too strong, and

Smirnoff resumed her training with

top professionals in NyC. After five

years of respectable international

results in the professional dance

circuit, Smirnoff came into her own

as a powerhouse in 2001 when—

partnered with fellow Ukrainian, Slavik

“The last time I cried was when I realized the relationship I was in—when I was engaged to be married—wasn’t going

to happen. It was a complete shock to me because I thought he was the one, and I was wrong.”

Breaking it down, leaving Smirnoff’s

presence there’s a little less light, a

little less truth leaves the room with

her. in a town known for a cacophony

of celebrity BS, it’s downright shocking

to sit down and hear the unvarnished

truth from someone so well known.

When i ask her the million-dollar

question: is the perfectionist, driven,

smart girl actually happy? Smirnoff

answers the only way she knows how,

completely honestly: “yes, almost—i’m

almost happy.” Here’s hoping she gets

there. She’s certainly put in the work.

As candid and loving and appealing

as Karina Smirnoff is during our curl-

up-on-the-sofa conversation, i find

myself wishing i was sitting next

As a single child, there were a lot of

i tried—grades in school, dancing

no siblings made it tough for my

parents, too. i don’t know how to do

anything halfway.

So the perfectionist in you was born.yes, absolutely.

i’m so excited!” Seeing that reaction

from the dancing diva, i said, “Are

you ready to have some fun and play

dress up?” She squealed—literally

squealed—and screamed: “Are you

kidding? Yes!” Now that’s the right

way to start my day way up in the

hills of Hollywood.

One of Smirnoff’s close friends—

and Season 12 DWTS partner—actor/

director ralph macchio, just gave

Smirnoff the opportunity of starring

in a film he wrote and directed

about a ten-year-old boy who

becomes fascinated with a beautiful

yet troubled older woman he sees

dancing in a neighboring house.

Smirnoff plays the dancer and the

movie just wrapped filming in New

york City. Smirnoff couldn’t be more

excited. “i absolutely love ralph

macchio and working on this film has

been one of the greatest joys in my

life. i can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

From different angles and in certain

light, Smirnoff resembles Angelina

Jolie one minute, Jennifer lópez the

next; the fact that those two supernova

icons are two of her biggest influences

makes perfect sense. But the thing to

take away from Karina Smirnoff is her

determined, can-do attitude to any

task before her, her burning desire to

have children as soon as possible and

her constant self-exploration.

At 14, you found yourself in the US and in New York City, no less.i recently learned the reason we left

Ukraine when i was 14 was because

crime was spiraling and it became

too dangerous for us to stay. When

i arrived in the US, i was afraid to

so different. i would run home from

school and try to learn English from

watching television shows. Friends

and Saved By The Bell were two

shows i always watched.

So Jennifer Aniston and Mario López helped you learn English?yes! [Laughs]

How did you manage a double major at Fordham University while pursuing dancing on the side?my parents didn’t want dancing to be

the sole focus of my life. So i pursued

two degrees with the intention

of attending law school when i

graduated. So i danced and went

to college at the same time. Crazy.

i remember this guy from England

approached me and i found out he

was among the top five dancers in

the world and he asked me to dance

with him at a tryout. By then i knew

this is what i wanted to do with my

career. To be able to dance with paul

Killick is like winning the lottery, but

my mom wasn’t happy at all. i went

to london for a year and came back

and graduated from Fordham. it was

tough, but i kept my promise to my

mom. Something i’m proud of.

Tell me about the hard fall you had dancing with Apolo Anton Ohno last season. It looked serious. The fall was the direct result of me

Andy Goldsborough ascribes to his

terrific blog www.thegildedowl.com.

As a writer and editor on the

more than two decades—and now as

borrow Goldsborough’s motto as my

own. The shapes of interesting things

and how they got that way intrigue

me—from spoons to cities, light bulbs

to landscapes. On every assignment i

learn something new. Over the years i

have traveled to report on the design

scenes in moscow, london, Stockholm,

destinations, yet the lure of the treasures

that await within a local antiques shop

on a New Jersey back road cues my

Some of my favorite design moments

Take a look at one of Andy

Goldsborough’s beautifully

executed creations in the

high-octane design pressure

cooker, park Avenue.

After many years of living

comfortably in your home, have

you ever imagined what it would

be like to live a leaner, cleaner life,

decoratively speaking? Without

emptying every room of your

favorite furnishings and possessions

to achieve an austere minimalism,

could you benefit from a pared-

down, lighter look? The longtime

owners of a luxury Upper East Side

apartment recently took such a leap

of faith to simplify and refine their

three-bedroom home after more

than two decades at the residence.

Working with Goldsborough, the

clients aimed to create a serene,

largely monochromatic environment

that would showcase their passion

for collecting Asian art and objects.

The mandate wasn’t to gain gallery-

grade austerity, but to achieve livable

rooms infused with a new spirit of

connoisseurship and discovery, all

without a new address.

“The owners of the apartment are

avid travelers, and lean toward an

Asian influence in the arts, though

their interests are sophisticated and

wide reaching, from Art

Deco to italian modernism,”

Goldsborough says. “We

wanted to showcase their

collections representing

art and objects from many

countries including Japan,

China, Cambodia and Syria,

finding the right spot for

each treasure to standout.”

The 3,150-square-foot

home’s existing design

scheme was essentially

established 15 years ago,

and the owners felt their

home was serviceable,

if perhaps a bit lagging

behind the times. “The furniture

and fabrics were all warm, saturated

tones in orange, which competed

with the art,” he says. “Since the

clients’ collection of Asian pieces

displayed many traditional black,

red and gold elements, we wanted

to create a cooler, calmer backdrop

as a counterpoint. The lighting

also was inadequate for both

everyday function and

illuminating the artwork,

so that became a major

element of the renovation,

taking total advantage of

the many technological

improvements in lighting.”

layer of architectural interest, and

designed by paul Frankel.

One of the lifestyle changes

adopted by the empty nesters was

to forsake a guest bedroom to

enhance their own private domain.

The footprint of the apartment’s third

bedroom was combined with the

master bedroom to create a generous,

enlarged main suite. Where artwork

abounds in the other living

spaces, a serene landscape with

few embellishments coaxes

slumber in this calming retreat.

As a backdrop for the bed, an F.

a silver satin foil ground

overlayed with a Chinoiserie

pattern, subtly underscoring the

household’s Asian theme. The

Capellini bed features a high-

gloss lacquer base, bracketed

by custom bedside tables

designed by Goldsborough and

glass tops and horn handles.

Sculptural bedside table

italian models manufactured by

hued ceiling pendant found by

the owners. The desk and chair are

by Gilbert rohde, while the vintage

chairs are by pierre paulin. Close at

pierced by two geometric openings

adds interest near the east-facing

windows, which are adorned with

simple scrims. A large, 20th century

gold leaf Asian screen mounted on

the wall depicts the watchful eye of

a woman in profile above the game

table. Syrian artist Asma Fayoumi’s

untitled work hangs above a 19th

century Chinese music table of rich

gilt and dark red lacquer, while a

glass sculpture in the window is by

italian artist by Silvio Vigliaturo.

The furnishings were selected for

their sculptural forms, all upholstered

within an icy palette so as to not

compete with the bold gestures of

the artwork, and a Vladamir Kagan

finish leather. A Flora floor lamp from

from one corner.

Sliding wood and glass doors—a

modernist interpretation of Japanese

An ethereal palette of cool, silvery

grays for furnishings and finishes

now blends with the white walls

and ceilings, contrasted by newly

ebonized floors. Subtle wall surfaces,

such as in the dining room and along

the fireplace wall in the living room,

are enhanced with waxed Venetian

plaster to catch the light and add

key swaths of sheen. The living room

ceiling was dropped and incorporates

an indirect, ambient light channel to

make the room glow, setting

another sculptural element.

integrated spotlights focus

upon the art along the walls.

The reconfigured fireplace

is similarly sculptural; a

glass mantel is slotted into

the wall, enveloped in a

metal channel like a piece of

oversize sculpture or jewelry. A

changing array of international

vessels and totems are

displayed on the mantel, with

the black marble fireplace

below serving as a grace note.

A striking coda is a pair of

bronze Art Deco andirons in

the form of mermaids signed

Thew. “Though the collection

is mostly Asian in provenance,

the unusual andirons dictated

most of the metalwork in the room,

cueing its bronze and brass finishes,”

Goldsborough says. “The objects

within the apartment are more edited

than eclectic, and it’s the elements of

surprise like the andirons that keep

things visually interesting.”

For a young couple retreating

from apartment living in

New york City to establish

their first home in New

Jersey, a 6,600-square-foot,

newly constructed house in mountain

upon which to explore their creativity.

The investment banker husband and

his wife, a new mom who was in

marketing for a luxury boutique hotel

chain, began collecting paintings and

sculptures with an eye toward color

and scale to fill their new abode. To

aid them in enhancing the house with

custom furnishings, layered textures

and vibrant color, they enlisted the

discerning eye of interior designer

Tere Bresin of Beret Design Group in

Upper montclair. “The house was still

in the final stages of construction, so

we were able to plan the moldings,

fireplace details, ceiling coffers and

lighting, the finishing touches that

give a home character,” Bresin says.

The home has some arts-and-crafts

design roots and classic proportions,

plus a beautiful staircase. Because

the three-story structure has large,

open spaces, careful space planning

was required to make it comfortable

for family gatherings as well as for

large informal events. most of the

rich shades of raspberry, pumpkin,

create a vibrant backdrop for art and

furnishings. “These clients were not

afraid of rooms juxtaposing bold

color,” Bresin says. Greeting guests in

the foyer, the polished, glazed Venetian

plaster walls are in a raspberry hue,

inspired by accents found within the

contemporary paintings displayed in

the living room and dining room. “We

wanted you to walk into the drama of

a bold foyer, leading to rooms cued

by different colors,” Bresin says. in

tones prevail with two textured

fabrics covering the curvaceous

chairs, lustrous silk draperies at the

windows and a Tibetan rug resting

underfoot. meanwhile, russet and

green upholstered furnishings in the

family room are joined by linen scrim

draperies and buttery walls.

The master bedroom embodies a

luxurious Art Deco neutral palette,

which provides a welcome respite

from the rich colors used throughout

the rest of the house.

Another essential element of the

interior design is layered lighting to

suit every mood. “if the lighting isn’t

delicious, then the whole thing will

fall flat,” Bresin says. Architecturally

interesting, many sculptural fixtures

abound, with chandeliers and sconces

There is something about these

places—characterized by a short

list, a private space and a locked

door—that drives our species wild.

There’s a desire to be

included on that guest

list, to be invited to

that special club.

Now more than

ever, private clubs

fill an important

space lacking in most

people’s lives—the

meeting place. This

space, constantly

evolving since ancient

times from tavern to

house to the modern day clubhouse,

functions in much the same way as

it did millennia before. in bringing

together like-minded people with

the more private clubs in manhattan

are relatively new and devoted to

entertaining city-dwellers. yet, what

they both share is something more

appealing; something

F. Scott Fitzgerald

alluded to when he

wrote, “The world, as

a rule, does not live

on beaches and in

country clubs.”

Belonging to these

clubs means having

an added amenity

more prized than an

18-hole golf course

or a bar filled with

celebrity socialites. it means having

the privilege of stealing a moment

of serenity by keeping the rest of the

world out.

Here, in the shadow of the

greatest city in the world, this

feeling of aristocracy is heightened

in immeasurable ways. While you

can clink champagne glasses in the

parlor of a Northern New Jersey

country club, you can also toast with

the same enjoyment in the stylings of

a posh manhattan private club later

that evening. The act is the same, but

the mood is entirely different—each

invokes an expression of the adjacent

areas to which it is incalculably tied.

Evolving in their own ways, the

private clubs of this area offer a unique

dichotomy for those lucky enough to

have the coveted memberships. While

the country clubs of New Jersey have

changed over generations from their

more humble beginnings, catering

only to gentlemen golfers, some of

beautiful estate lives on.

The traditional golf clubhouse

houses ten guest suites, a library

and two dining rooms. in the

mansion’s drawing room sits a stately

it is today. One of the greatest

transformations was directed by

robert Trent Jones Sr. who in the

1950s renovated the course, elevating

it from A. W. Tillinghast’s 18-hole

course to the worldwide acclaim it

enjoys today. But the legacy of a

newly minted clubhouse in the 1920s

remains, evident in the elegant 20th

century design of the interior.

One of the only country clubs

to have hosted tournaments for all

three professional golf associations,

the legendary pedigree is in the very

rafters. The traditional old-stone,

A sister club to the original Soho

House, founded in london in 1995,

the club is exclusive to those working

in creative industries such as film,

media and music. The extensive

facilities—encompassing more than

45,000 square feet and six floors—

reside in a converted warehouse on

Ninth Avenue, and feature a 44-seat

cinema, the Cowshed spa

and—most dramatically—a

rooftop pool.

Vicky Charles, the in-

house designer, refers to the

space as “casual glamour,”

and it’s easy to give yourself

entirely to the cool charm

when you’re surrounded

by elegant aesthetics and

fab vintage décor. Charles

started working for Soho

House as a waitress in

london, and rising through

the company, she has a

strong sense of what makes

an interior of a Soho House

club so unique. For instance,

many of the items that reside in the

club are either originally made for the

New york City space or have been

discovered by Charles.

Aside from the club, the space

also houses a hotel with 26 signature

bedrooms completely refurbished

with Cherub beds from At la maison.

There’s a reason everyone’s talking

about Soho House.

Like his father before him, rees Jones has earned

the title of “The Open Doctor.” His specialty?

Taking a golf course—and with a surgical eye—

transforming it into the next US Open, pGA

Championship and ryder, Walker or presidents

Jones grew up playing on courses he now carefully

reconstructs. A native of montclair, he received a degree

Though rees Jones could base

his massively successful business

literally anywhere on the planet, he

decided to stay close to home and

chose montclair as the headquarters

for his famed company. A man of

vision, creativity and warmth, Jones’

list of awards is as impressive as any

golf pro (he boasts a handicap of 9.6

and a career round of 71).

pinning the busy Jones down

wasn’t easy, but once we did we

chatted about his various projects,

what gives a New Jersey golf course

its specific personality and the new

design trends that await golfers. Sip

on an Arnold palmer, and get ready

to glean a little wisdom from a golf

architect demigod.

What are some of the private residence courses you’ve designed? We’ve designed a handful of courses

in private residences in the Northeast.

These courses typically feature

four or five greens each designed

and oriented to be accessible from

multiple tee and fairway angles,

such that players can enjoy

a never-ending variety of

shot-making experiences.

Are there any standout private courses you can tell us about? One exception i can surely

discuss is our “Three ponds

Farm” project in Bridgehampton, Ny.

in the mid-1990s, my good friends

Ed and Cheryl Gordon asked me to

design a fun and challenging short

course on their estate.

Are there any golf course projects in New Jersey in the works?yes. We’re currently working on quite

a few renovation projects all over

New Jersey and the Northeast. in

New Jersey, we recently

began planning efforts

at Deal Golf & Country

Club. Some of our

other Jersey projects

include Baltusrol GC,

Hackensack GC, Echo

lake CC, Canoe Brook

CC, Essex Fells CC and

montclair GC.

How did growing up in New Jersey influence or change your career?i grew up playing golf

in montclair, so i feel

very fortunate to be

able to work on many

of the courses i played as a young

man. Over the years, i’ve become

well known for my work preparing

golf courses for major championships;

but that work is only a small

percentage of my portfolio.

How does the natural landscape of New Jersey affect your design? The New Jersey landscape is quite

diverse. Each site presents

a unique set of challenges

and opportunities. For

example, the property at

Deal Golf & Country Club,

which is near the coastline,

is more gently rolling, with

minimal rock. in contrast,

the Forest Course at

Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club in

Bedminster is much more rugged.

How has sustainability affected you? more designers, operators and

superintendents are now re-thinking

traditional standards. We’re trying

to reduce the physical footprint of

the golf course, especially those

more intensely maintained areas,

which translates into lower purchase,

development and some

long-term maintenance

cost jumps, which are

typically passed along

to the golfer.

Tell us about your best day playing golf.i’ve been very fortunate

to enjoy so, so many

great days, with great

people, playing golf. i

mostly play golf with

friends and clients, but

i’ve also played with

president Bush (41)

and president Clinton.

i’ve also played with

Sean Connery and Donald Trump and

several well-known tour pros.

Do you have a favorite golf hole on a course you’ve designed?my courses are like my children, so

it’s impossible to have a favorite.

Would you say there are any new trends in golf course design? Any features you especially like doing?i think most architects are refocusing

attention on overall playability. We

still want to design courses with

diversity and challenge, but it’s very

important that players of all skill

levels be able to enjoy their rounds

and not be intimidated by forced

carries and penal features.

Above all, we want to deliver an

enjoyable experience. This approach

will not only help retain current

players, but also helps attract a wide

demographic of new players, all of

which leads to a healthier sport.

What’s your favorite golf course—it can be anywhere on the planet? The next one i design because it will

be a culmination of all my ideas.

Keeping up with the Joneses “I grew up playing golf in Montclair, so I feel very fortunate to be able to work on many of the courses I played as a young man.”

“MY courses

HIGH STAKES CHOKER The Fern Necklace is a choker that features branches and leaves with emeralds and diamonds leading to an emerald and diamond pendant.

In the nineties, the go-to accessory of choice for many “It” girls was the choker necklace. Try as you might to deny it, we all had a few favorites that we were convinced were the perfect touches

to any ensemble. Well, I have some news for you—the choker has returned. Don’t be alarmed; the chokers of today only loosely resemble their earlier counterparts and contain many, many more diamonds.

The choker’s comeback is in full flight: Hollywood beauties Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Wigg, Olivia Wilde and Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whitely have all been seen on the red carpet in dazzling displays of diamond and jewel-toned chokers that rest delicately against the collarbone and not tightly around the neck.

The Fern Necklace is the epitome of style and splendor with the perfect combination of

sparkling diamonds and breathtaking emeralds. This one-of-a-kind choker was specially created

by jewelry designer Shaun Leane for Asprey and features fern branches and leaves hinged and intertwined

with round and pear shaped emeralds and diamonds leading to a removable emerald and diamond pendant. Set with a pear shaped emerald and suspended within a diamond frame, the necklace is set in platinum with black rhodium highlights. Simply stunning.

With award season just behind us, unforgettable chokers such as the Fern made fabulous accouterments for starlets gracing many a red carpet. Once again.

THINK PINK

Now that award season has passed and the next round of fashion shows aren’t until fall, you may find yourself craving some more glamour and a

dash of luxury in your life. You’re in luck. Spring is here, and there’s no time like the present to start splurging on your warm weather wardrobe—and even more importantly, accessories. As you say hello to a brighter color palette, don’t forget that the secret to achieving the ultimate in glamour resides in the details. Dior sunglasses, a Chanel handbag, sexy stilettos, a smack of red lipstick and, oh yes, the perfect jewelry—properly adorned—can bring out the very best of the wearer.

As admirers of Ross-Simons Jewelers know, a special pair of earrings holds a secret all its own. Roberto Coin’s 18-karat rose gold earrings feature six diamond-enshrined pink sapphires, and Coin’s signature addition: A stunning ruby that boasts the added benefit of good luck. Steeped in ancient Egyptian lore, the ruby is believed to bring its wearer health, happiness and good fortune.

Celebrate the arrival of spring and the opportunity for fresh beginnings with this gorgeous bling that’s perfect for the red carpet or, even better, an adventurous night out with some arm candy to match your dazzling lobes.

POCKET ROCKETBy JaCqUeliNe rOmaN

Leave it to the experts at the celebrated Parmigiani Fleurier to provide the world with an upgraded version of a timeless classic

that masterfully blends the charm of a pocket watch with the chic modernism of today’s technology. Having debuted this year at the SIHH Watch Exhibition in Geneva, this exquisite timepiece—dubbed the Transforma CBF—has captured an audience all its own.

Originally designed in partnership with the Brazilian Soccer Confederation, watch enthusiasts have quickly been drawn to the design regardless of their alliance to any particular team. By cohesively balancing the historic beauty of a classic pocket watch with a design that’s far from outdated, the Transforma CBF is an honorable nod to its predecessors.

With the unique ability to be transformed into three different configurations and including two interchangeable watch heads, this $66,500 model has more going for it than merely looks. Capturing the longstanding nobility of the CBF, the piece can be worn as a fashionable wristwatch, displayed as a sophisticated desk clock or used as an elegant pocket watch—the latter being our personal preference.

Connected to a sleek silver chain, the Transforma pocket watch takes on an ephemeral beauty when you change the watch heads between the chronographic and annual calendar models. The chronograph watch head shines in a carbon case and polished steel holder, discreetly containing the three emblematic colors of the CBF on the counter hands and numerals. Through the anti-reflective sapphire crystal screen, the satin-finished “guilloche” design can be admired, as well as five symbolic green stars that stand for Brazil’s World Cup victories to date.

Faster than you can mutter “it’s been a long winter,” we’ll all be sorting through last year’s summer

whites. While we should be wardrobe editing, let’s give our moneymaker (no, not that one)—our faces—some much needed TLC. With bushier, fi lled-in brows, longer lashes and layered lips being a primary focus, our skin has to look top-shelf clear to accommodate more naked makeup and less eye color.

First some good news: prescriptives.com, no newcomer to

the pursuit of skin perfection, has just made millions of once devastated global fans newly ecstatic with the

launch of its web-based Custom Blend Foundation and Loose Powder, joining Super Line Preventor Extreme and its wildly popular skincare line. The inventors of Color Printing—a process that identifi es the predominant

primary colors and undertones of your precise skin—are now available by video chat appointment via a “beauty genius.” Your hour-long

cosmetic Web-counter will not only produce the same perfection-matching results you’ve come to expect from Prescriptives, science has allowed for varying coverage and optional fi nish add-ins such as

Radiance or Candlelight, moisture or anti-pigmentation and more. With prescriptives.com, the world can once again put its best-matched-foundation face forward.

With time being our most valuable asset, we were looking forward to test-driving Riiviva Microderm’s professional—at home—microdermabrasion device. Yes, for a starting price of $299 and less than ten minutes a week, this medical-grade multi-tasker can gently, effectively correct visual signs of aging, Keratosis Pilaris, mild stretch marks and acne scarring. More important, this diamond-tipped, vacuum technology softens fi ne lines, wrinkles and brown spots via its patent-pending vortex to draw down loosened skin cells into a sterile fi lter. Best part? Stimulating and removing topical debris and dead cells makes our expensive serums, cream treatments and esthetician visits much, much more receptive to absorption—making overall results very noticeable. And isn’t that the point of our anti-aging routine?

Riiviva.com’s well done website displays how-to videos for each facial or body concern. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll want a lot more. The kit comes with a full set of three diamond facial tips—and offers affordable tips for more specifi c conditions such as blackheads or skin plumping. star infuser of this very mighty skincare lineup that boasts impressive portions of O-placenta ovine placenta extract, hyaluronic acid, grape seed extracts, kiwi seed oil and more. I could go on about stem cells, but ultimately SCBI is formulated (and ethically harvested) to ramp up and rejuvenate our aging human organisms—paying attention to our facial cell turnover, increasing levels of collagen, glycoproteins and elastic fibers in the skin—as cells did in the past. This is also the perfect time to introduce your personal micro current or infrared device. Serums and moisturizers aside, (all excellent), I was intrigued by SCBI’s Volcanic Ash Antioxidant Exfoliant and Antioxidant Lightening Cleanser. So the next time you’re accused of being over-the-top for using gold-infused treatments, your retort should be something not unlike “precious metals are rapid vehicles that drive product home—deeper into your skin.” And that’s why you look so firm and refreshed.

Rarely have I had the opportunity to use just one skincare line for an extended period. As I found moving within the concrete jungle consumed weeks of my life, I had but one complete line to sample. Lucky for me, Tilth, which touts “cultivating beautiful skin” as its mantra, was produced by rock-star chemist (former Elizabeth Arden R & D man)

a fresh, glowing complexion. Also, Riiviva’s simplified, potent skincare lineup is quite good. Its Olive Leaf, Green Tea and Aloe gel cleanse made my face so soft, I’ve started using it to wash my hands and dry cuticles. When was the last time your spring-cleaning included diamond tips? Exactly.

Now that we’ve cleared the way, our skin is primed for some deep, potent cell turnover. Enter Stem Cell Beauty Innovations (SCBI). Its potent Gold Stem Cell Concentrate is the

Tony Vargas. We all know organics are a great way to go, but not everyone’s drinking the Kool-Aid. Tilth is a powerhouse youth potion that contains many new-to-market anti-aging actives. It feels luxurious, absorbs immediately and the resulting supple skin without residue means makeup glides on.

Tilth’s glam organic price point delivers results with quality and quantities of unheard-of marine extracts, botanicals and absorbable vitamins. My go-to pieces are the Argan-Tangerine Deep Cleansing Lotion (a rich, sappy

oil), the Gentle Poppy Seed Exfoliator (the new bio-exfoliant method), and the company’s superior toners are treatments themselves—Aloe Restoration and Berry Extract. I use A Flawless Serum and Sea Origin Serum simultaneously, then Eye Wondrous Serum and Resurrect Eye Cream with peptides and retinols—the 24/7 savior for mature skin. The punch list of this green, sulfate and gluten-free dynamo

line is longer for what it does not contain—a full breakdown is available at www.tilthbeauty.com.

And, finally, matte is back. I’ve often heard women wanting to mash up their favorite lipstick shades, and Napoleon Perdis has done it again with each shade level’s hue being brightened no matter the

color. Mattetastic is mature, hip and playful. Spring is

definitely here.

anessa Deleon’s career path reads a little like a fairy tale; a rags-to-riches story of sorts that—when

considering all that she has accomplished thus far—has all the makings of a happy ending. Her happily ever after, however, won’t be obtained via fairy godmother or sheer luck. Inspired by her Cuban roots, Deleon credits her flourishing career to the entrepreneurship and strong will that her family instilled in her from an early age. Though Deleon originally envisioned herself one day dressing celebrities as a stylist, the interior design classes she took while enrolled at Manhattan’s legendary Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) sparked her interest and steered her path in a new direction. Her schooling, coupled with a part-time job at her family-owned furniture store, found Deleon not only surrounded by the tools to take on the profession, but the ideal clientele.

It’s that same metropolitan-grown determination that Deleon points to as the basis for much of her success. And the go-getter attitude that doesn’t allow for complacency continues to drive her in all aspects of her career.

“In New York City, everyone wants to be on top and they all have that goal,” Deleon says. “It has shaped me as an individual, as a woman, as a designer. Not that I want to be better than anybody because I never look to my left or my right. I focus on me. But I have that sense of I can be better because I want to be. I critique myself every single day and I’m hard on myself, and I feel just that alone fuels me for tomorrow.”

of Interior Designers. With momentum building, Deleon’s business began contracting commercial space and high-end clientele, while Deleon herself pursued television opportunities following her appearance on Design Star. As the host of Your Place Is A Deal Breaker on Spaces TV, a YouTube owned Web channel, a design expert on local news segments in the New York City area and on subsequent

HGTV shows, Deleon has become a familiar face. Second to her television success on Design Star would likely be her role alongside celebrity chef Robert Irvine on the Food Network’s popular series Restaurant: Impossible. Armed with the task of transforming a failing restaurant in just two days, Irvine—also the program’s host—enlists the help of professionals to complete the revamp, including Deleon.

Were the restaurants depicted in the show transformed in two days? Sure. Were there dozens of assistants and contractors behind the scenes who were never shown on camera? Absolutely.

“I always say, ‘At the end of the day, it’s TV’, so what you see isn’t necessarily always what it is,” Deleon says. “In this situation, there’s a lot of pro bono work being done in the background that a lot of people don’t realize.”

And the Vanessa Deleon we saw on the first season of HGTV’s Design Star?

“They definitely took the New York attitude that we all have—without it we couldn’t survive in this world—and stepped it up a notch,” she says. “We’re go-getters, we don’t mind working hard. We have that sort of je ne sais quoi about us. We may be too fast for someone else and that may look too aggressive or that may look like we’re trying too hard. But no, that’s just our character.”

Vanessa’s Raves The New York Design

Center is a mecca of design showrooms perfect for spending a day bouncing from showroom to showroom, gathering ideas and inspiration for projects of any size. “I love 200 Lexington. It’s one of my go-tos.”

For tile, DeLeon says she often relies on Porcelanosa, which always has a wide selection of tiles, mosaics and stone for every room in your home. New Jersey locations include East Brunswick, Paramus and Ramsey.

Another DeLeon pick: Artistic Tile in Paramus, which has modern and classic designs to fit your needs for either home or corporate projects.

Bonus: For inspiration on your interior design, look no farther than your closet. “When I do an in-home consultation I tend to look at my client’s closet just to see, are there pops of color, are there a lot of patterns, are they more monochromatic, maybe they are more tailored and traditional. There are a lot of things you can take away just from looking into someone’s closet.”

Centuries ago, longevity wasn’t exactly an attribute of heretics. Considered at best traitors—and at worst

aligned with the devil—nonconformists, blasphemers and renegades typically ended up at the wrong end of a pointy stick. Nowadays, of course, it pays to be something of an iconoclast. At least that’s the idea behind Ecosse Moto Works’ visually bespoken, high-octane bellwether, the Heretic, and its cadre of delightfully wicked, luxury motorcycles.

The modern day evil genius behind the Heretic is one Donald Atchison. Once a Marine Corps offi cer, Atchison holds an MBA in mechanical engineering and a serious need to shatter expectations. A motorcycle enthusiast, Atchison was formerly a downhill skier, road racer and dirt bike riding speed freak. He founded Ecosse more than a decade ago to bring his creation to life.

Atchison began developing his idea for a high-end street bike worthy of exclusive furnishings, unprecedented design and aggressive performance. Napkin sketches and early drafts from his days as a business developer eventually took shape. In 2003, the fi rst road-ready models were released for a small group of selected afi cionados and collectors. And just like that, the Heretic became a staple of high-performance artisan motorcycles everywhere.

To commemorate the ten-year anniversary of crafting mercurial “anti-choppers,” Ecosse designed the Founder’s Edition Titanium XX, an even more radical V-Twin than its impressive predecessors.

While the exclusive FE Ti XX (just 13 are slated to be made) is stylistically similar to the Heretic model, Atchison is quick to note that the most important features of the bike are

wholly unique. Take the undercarriage. A fi rst of its kind, the trellis-style chassis and colorless coils of the

exhaust system are painstakingly handcrafted from titanium. Aside from being expensive, strong and

highly resistant to corrosion, titanium is also incredibly

light: At only 440 lbs., the bike delivers on all cylinders.

Before the four riders of the apocalypse get astride their

malevolent steeds for the fi rst and last

time, they would be wise to take a side trip to

the Ecosse Moto factory near Denver and consider the alternative to demon horsepower: American torque.

The FE Ti XX is like a timeless piece of art that you can mount, kick-start, throw back the throttle and explore the forbidden speeds with the help of a more than 200 horsepower, 2409cc billet engine that delivers more than 200 feet-lbs. of torque to the rear wheel at sea level. Buoyed by MotoGP-grade Öhlins suspension, the power screaming away underneath the rider is intoxicating, allowing the street bike to punish turns and straightaways with indifference. You can even embellish it with your own personal message. Try having as much fun with that priceless painting in your living room. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

While Ecosse maintains a cultish following with its satisfi ed customers, they’re relatively low profi le compared with other limited-production street bike manufacturers. But by moving away from its staple V-Twins to pursue F1-derived superbikes and crossovers—and with models currently in development—the future looks just as promising as the p ast decade.

Not too bad for a heretic sect hidden somewhere in the Rockies. Not bad at all.

If a yacht is not unlike a revered spouse—accommodating, protective, adorned for years with an exclusive pet name—consider a personal

watercraft (PWC) a sexy date. Suggestive, quick and exhilarating, the only guilt your conscience will feel afterward will be from hindsight, as you confess to no one but yourself that the throttle could’ve been cranked more through those marshlands or frothy whitecaps.

While skimming across the relative calm of a lake, or shaving the foam off a more challenging ocean, it’s easy

to get tunnel vision with state-of-the-art PWCs. And Yamaha’s FX Cruiser SHO and Kawasaki’s Ultra 300 LX are no exception to this nautical enchantment. Considered the pinnacle of luxury PWCs, these two

sleek vehicles allow exploration for one to three riders. Just hold on; luxury in this case means riding a rocket-propelled missile over a thin meniscus of water at breakneck speeds. The child in you is smiling right now.

Even though many people use their names interchangeably when speaking about such watercraft, in reality, referring to

a Jet Ski as a WaveRunner, and vice versa, is like calling any animal with a bill and feathers a duck. While these vehicles have similar features, they also boast numerous characteristics that make them entirely unique and distinctive for the enthusiast.

Given the title of “best-selling luxury PWC of all time” is Yamaha’s fl agship WaveRunner, the FX Cruiser SHO. This mantle doesn’t come lightly. What sets this WaveRunner apart—other than the supercharged four-cylinder, high output engine, and Yamaha’s trademark vertical column of spray produced in the rear—are additional features that make perfect sense. For starters, the craft has a large stern platform

with handles; excellent for clambering aboard. Combine that with a tow hook and a storage hatch, and opportunities abound—wake boarding and waterskiing, to name two. And the fun is shareable thanks to an added third-person cruiser seat that’s just as comfortable and roomy as the other two.

Or maybe you’d like to ride solo (or with your daredevil friends) as you blast across sea foam like you’re on a Kawasaki super-sport Ninja motorbike? Well that’s certainly possible with the 2013 Jet Ski Ultra 300LX. Its 300 hp supercharged engine, a product of Kawasaki engineering, makes turning or long-cruises both highly enjoyable, thanks in part to a 20.6-gallon fuel tank, the highest capacity in its class. And the fi ve-way adjustable handlebars give the craft its own personal touch, as you go from the standard PWC adjustment to raised motocross handlebars in seconds.

Peppered with one-of-a-kind bookstores, boutiques, kitchen retailers and a bevy of other hidden treasures,

New York City’s Chelsea Market is a veritable food concourse. Serving as world headquarters of Food Network, this culinary mecca offers a centralized sampling of the eclectic eateries and experiences for which the island of Manhattan is known. With an empty stomach and big eyes I set out on a journey of exploration that included crepes, artisan cheeses, truffl es, perfectly baked donuts and other tasty delights.

Dubbed by Zagat as the “carbophile’s” paradise, Amy’s Bread has more than 20 different variations of bread and a mouthwatering selection of artisan cakes that will entice you

through the door and befuddle all your dieting resolutions. This is your new guilty pleasure. The Defi nitely Devil’s Food Cake “for chocolate lovers only” smoothly delivers a double layer of bittersweet chocolate cake generously topped with decadent silk frosting. Chocolate not your thing? The Lemon Mousseleine Cake boasts an intoxicating hint of lemon fl avors accented with tangy-sweet lemon custard. Whichever delicacy you choose, your slice of paradise will have you coming back for more.

Seeking a quick pick-me-up to sustain you as you stroll th rough corridors of this gastronomic nirvana? Head to One Lucky Duck, where everything—and we mean everything—served is certifi ed raw, vegan and, yes, organic. Specializing

in pressed juices and drinks packed with nutrients, the Duck is the ideal spot to refuel. And as no juice bar would be complete without the perfect amount of add-ons, One Lucky Duck has them all: Bee pollen, blue green algae, hemp protein and agave nectar can be added to any creation. Organic afi cionados, rejoice!

Let’s talk Austrailia, shall we? Nestled within Chelsea Market is Tuck Shop, “the great Aussie bite,” which doubles as the perfect place to grab a quick snack or full-on feast. We recommend the Spinach and Ricotta Roll, the perfect marriage of a light, fl aky crust and savory center. A short trip from the ordinary with far out taste, the Shop will send you “waltzing Matilda” on your way.

If you’re searching for a fresh sit-down meal within the heart of the Market, make your way over to The Green Table, a farm-to-table restaurant and wine bar that offers nothing but sustainable, organic, biodynamic food and drink.

Don’t forget The Filling Station, the full service oil, vinegar, salt and beer bar. Carrying the fi nest local and imported varieties of its four specialties, The Filling Station is perhaps the only place in town where you can try delicacies such as Blood Orange Olive Oil, Espresso Vinegar, Hawaiian Hiwakai Salt (derived from solar evaporated pools formed from natural lava fl ow), Duvel Ale (a signature Flemish ale) and local favorite, Brooklyn Pilsner lager.

It’s hard to resist Brad Goreski. From the reed-thin Canadian’s first on-screen appearance as the endearingly (overly?) sensitive junior

assistant to Hollywood celebrity über-stylist Rachel Zoe, Goreski was the puppy in the window we had to take home. And, boy, did we ever.

After three seasons of sartorial giggles, gallons of tears and the smartest, sharpest fashion eye on television as a key player in Bravo’s long-running hit The Rachel Zoe Project, Goreski was rewarded by the network with his own series, It’s A Brad, Brad World (season two is currently airing), after announcing to Zoe that he was leaving her employ. By all accounts, Zoe—and, significantly, her husband, Rodger Berman—didn’t take Goreski’s departure well at all. At all.

Goreski’s career ascension has been fast and impressive: A couple of summer interning gigs at couture bibles Vogue and W, an assistant role at Vogue’s Los Angeles office and a career-defining chance encounter with Zoe. Goreski

are picked on the most in school have something very special to contribute to the world. They really do.

Tell me about you and Rachel Zoe.I’m at a peaceful place with the entire Rachel situation. Here’s where I’m at—I adore Rachel and I always will. If Rachel ever wanted to talk to me, my door’s totally open.

How many tears are shed this season of It’s A Brad, Brad World?Oh, way less than last year! [Laughs] This season you’ll see me as more of a boss since I have two new assistants. There’s big drama coming their way, of course, but I’m no Miranda Priestley as a boss. Even when I’m mean, I’m nice. [Laughs]

Who’s Hollywood’s best-dressed?Well, besides my clients, Rooney Mara has a very individual style that I love. She’s completely unique. Diane Kruger is another contender, and you can’t go wrong with the classic Helen Mirren—I think her look is effervescent with a wink-wink to the audience.

In five years you’re doing what?I’m really happy where things are now, but I’d love to see the Brad Goreski brand grow. I hope my business is at a different level in five years, but I’m still styling.

Any experience with New Jersey.I’m friends with [Real Housewives Of New Jersey star] Caroline Manzo, whom I love. And at a book signing in New Jersey last year I met the chicest 11-year-old I’ve ever seen. So, yes, Jersey’s great.

Tell me a secret.I wear $19.99 slippers with memory foam around the house. What’s so funny, Richard? It’s true! [Laughs]

Are you happy? You know, I’m extremely happy. I really am. Thanks for asking! [Laughs]

Speaking with Brad Goreski is exactly how you imagine it would be—a hell of a lot of fun. He’s chatty, honest and witty and you could easily see how he could become your best friend. But make no mistake: This new, mature, business-savvy, telegenic, fashion-obsessed man is a puppy no more. Big dog Brad has arrived. Woof!

Define luxury.A day off—an entire day that I’m not married to my iPhone.

What’s the biggest fashion mistake women make? It’s this ongoing fascination with comfort. Sweat pants and borderline pajamas are not OK outside the home. Ever. [Laughs]

Easiest fashion fix?Straying outside their comfort zone: If you wear sweats, try jeans. If you wear jeans, try a pencil skirt. Just push your boundaries a little bit.

Do you realize how many young people you’ve helped?I wasn’t aware until I went on my book tour last year in the US and Canada. I think it’s very important to emphasize to all young people—gay or straight—that the kids who
