by Len LathropWow, what a night in Litchfield: a 1,000-point scorer, a

state championship banner raising and a sound thumpingof Prospect Mountain High School. Where to start ... thefocus seemed to be on the 12 points that Hannah Neildneeded to reach 1,000 career points as a Cougar.

The countdown was posted above the mats at the end ofthe court. Family and friends, and even her future collegecoach, were there holding placards with 1,000 on them. You could see the 1,000-points pressure on Neild. Thebaskets just were not dropping for her, and with everymiss, there was a moan from the fans.

But at the start of the second quarter, things begin to turnaround. With about three seconds left in the half, Neildmoves from the right across the box with a left-handedlayup; there it is a foul and she is going to the line. With

by Shannon LindsayOn Dec. 19 and 20, Alvirne High Schools

Unified Theatre group held its first show, a

holiday variety show with a heartfelt storylinerunning throughout it. The show was held inAlvirnes new theatre room, Theatre 3.1.1.,and was a huge success with both days beingcompletely sold out; people even had to beturned away at the door.

The show, titled Holiday Extravaganza, consisted of nine scenes. Each sceneincluded a different holiday song or two andlots of singing and dancing. Some of thescenes which the audience seemed to enjoythe most included the songs Jingle BellRock, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, AllI Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth, and Let It Go. The audience was invited tosing along to all of the songs, with the wordsbeing shown on a projector screen at theback of the stage.

The songs and performancesthroughout the show were broughton by a story about two boys whowere fighting too much, rather thanenjoying Christmas together. Throughthe different songs and performances, the boys, along with the audience, were given the message that

everything is more enjoyable if youput aside disagreements and are ableto have fun together.

The show got rave reviews fromanyone who came to see it. Oneaudience member commented, Itwas a wonderful performance. Ihad a smile on my face for the entireperformance. Another stated, Ifyou were not in the Christmas spiritprior to going into this show, youwalked out feeling like you wantedto dance and sing. It brought tears tomy eyes when you could see that thekids were so proud of what they weredoing and how happy they were to bein front of the audience.

Lauren Denis, one of the teachersin charge of putting the whole show

together, was particularly pleased withthe show, but was also thrilled about theexperience as a whole. This experiencewas one that I will never forget, she stated. The rehearsal process was my favorite partbecause this is where all the students startedforming friendships. The jokes, the high-fives, the laughs started there and are stillgoing. As a teacher of theater, that is what itis all about.

Even though the Unified Theatre showthis year has come and gone, there are still

many other projects taking place at Alvirnethat can support Project Unify and AlvirnesW.A.T.S. Club. Currently, the unifiedbasketball season is in full swing. There areno remaining home games, but an awaygame will be played at Nashua South onMonday, Feb. 2 at 3:15. Also, the PenguinPlunge, their most important fundraiser, willbe Saturday, Jan. 31. The Word Around Town...

Letters to our EditorPresident Obama Went AWOLOn January 11, 2015, 40 leaders from various

countries and 1.3 million people participated in anti-

terrorism events in Paris. President Obama was AWOL,and he was only represented by our ambassador toFrance.

It is diffi cult to believe our President overlooked theneed to be in Paris for the anti-terrorism rally. Based onhis previous comments it is quite possible he decided hedid not want to offend Islam by appearing at the anti-terrorism unity march.

In the past he has refused to label the multitudeof attacks conducted by Muslims as Islamic terroristattacks. He said we are not at war with Islam, but itsure appears Islam is at war with us. After all, what isthe religion of almost every terrorist who h as attackedWestern civilization in the past 50 years?

President Obama, you just offended every freedomloving person in the world.

Dealing with the RisingCosts of Living

Recently, we voted for a new regime in the hope thatthere would be immediate changes to make life better. And looking forward to the New Year, we waited to hearhow the various newly elected offi cials would begin tomake life better.

Surely there would be an increase to help with therising cost of living. And suddenly, within a week of theNew Year, reality is hitting. During the week betweenChristmas and New Years, I received a mailing from theSocial Security Administration, boasting how the newCOLA would grant me an immediate increase of $24beginning on January 1, 2015. And that sounded gooduntil another week passed.

Already in this New Year, I have seen increased coststhat are going to eat up the great COLA increase. Ilearned that my average electric bill has increased fromthe usual $65 to $75 per month year around; and isnow $99.10 for January 2015. Tere went my $24increase. But the same day I received a letter telling me

that Comcast was going to have to increase my monthlybill by $4.96. And here it is just one week into the NewYear with my great COLA increase of $24 already eatenup by increased costs of living which at this rate will

consume $360 of my annual income. We hear rumorsthat many other living costs including food and heat arecoming, yet.

Is there going to be any way to make up thiscontinuing reduction in Soc. Sec. Income, which wasdesigned to prevent us from falling behind?

North Side GrilleA Great Place for Breakfast, Dinner or Drinks

The North Side Grille is a warm, inviting, neighborhood restaurantowned by Roger and Lauren Soulard, which opened in August.Starting out with breakfast seven days a week, the restaurant hasevolved into a full pub with dinner five nights a week.

North Side Grille has an easy-to-read menu of appetizers, sandwiches, wraps, burgers, homemade soups, chowders, seafoodand dinners. Of course daily breakfast shines through with eggs, pancakes, French toast, and all the homemade creations that comefrom those fresh ingredients.

The new Back Room a full-service bar with TVs, intimate tables, and locally crafted beers, both bottled and on tap, a full drinkmenu, and fine wines, is quickly becoming a favorite hangout spotfor locals. North Side is also adding local spirits to the drink mix --check out more info at #drinklock.

We wanted to create a place thats comfortable for the guys tocome for an after-work celebration, or a couple to enjoy a niceevening out, explained Roger.

North Side Grille will be open every night of the week afterNew Years Day and they look forward to expanding the menu andspecials to accommodate the daily dinner crowd; and you can stillexpect a mouthwatering, slow-roasted prime rib on Saturdays.

We know there are many local dinner choices, continued Roger. We understand our food, people, and atmosphere has to be specialto make it in todays restaurant climate. We ask that you comecheck out North Side Grille and see if weve created a place whereeverybody will know your name.

Pole is Youngest Everto Receive esteemed

    MacTavish Awardsubmitted by Jimy Weaver

Monday morning, Jan. 12 was just any normal day for JoeyPolewarczyk, Jr. He was at work turning wrenches at his family-owned shop at Poles Automotive in Hudson, less than 24 hoursafter returning from the American Canadian Tour ChampionshipBanquet in Burlington, Vt., where he collected top honors and wascrowned the 2014 ACT Champion.

The 25 year old also humbly accepted the DonMacTavish award. Each year, the American CanadianTour awards a person or group with the prestigiousMacTavish Award at its annual year-end Banquetof Champions. The award is given for outstandingcontribution in the field of stock car racing and namedin honor of MacTavish for his contributions to NewEngland racing and is arguably the highest honor givento any racer in the Northeast.

I am sosurprised andhonored tohave beenchosen for thisprestigiousaward. Theimportanceof the awardis not lost onme and this issomething thatwill stay withme always, said Joey.MacTavish was considered to be the first representativefrom the Northeast who had the potential to make itbig in auto racing before losing his life in a race atDaytona in 1969. Past recipients of the award haveincluded Bill France, Sr. (1969) NASCAR founder andKen Squier (1972) NASCAR Hall of Fame announcerfrom CBS and MRN radio.

Joey is the youngest person to ever have beenpresented with this award and deservingly so. He isthe only driver to have won all of the big money

races in the Northeast: the Oxford 250, the ACTInvitational at NHMS, the International 500, the MilkBowl and the Fall Foliage 300. Joey can now add theACT championship and the MacTavish award to hisrsum.

At the young age of 25 he has accomplished morethan most could ever imagine. I would go watchthese races with my dad and dream of just being ableto attempt to qualify for some of these events. Tohave won them all is beyond words, and I cant thankeveryone enough who has supported my along theway.

Even with all of hissuccess Joey still strives formore as he looks forward to2015. We need to improveour Super Late Modelprogram from 2014 and canalways still improve on ourLate Model program. We

just got back from Five Flags

Speedway in Pensacola (Fla.)with the SLM where we werefast but ran into some badluck, Joey said. The 97NHteam is looking to go backto New Smyrna Speedwayin Florida on Feb. 16 and 17for the American Racer Cupto pick up where they leftoff the last time the ACT tourwas there in 2011: victorylane.

Thumbs downto 2016proposed town/schoolbudgets and employeewide raises plus theanticipated increases intown assessment valuesof homes that will go intoeffect next year. Homesreassessed due to valuesincreasing, says thetown. Median anticipatedtax increase anywherebetween $300-$550.Town stated homes haveincreased in value byabout 30k-50k If we donot vote and speak up thisis the total tax increase forthe median home-pricewe could expect to see-including voted in-warrantarticles. Homes for sale

    prices are decreasing onrealtor websites.

Thumbs downtoentitlements. SocialSecurity and Medicareneed to be phased out. They are a tool for politicalmanipulation, a weight onthe economy and the rootof the nanny state in thiscountry. Properly done, there would be no moremisery and death thanthere is already.

Thumbs downtothe use of rags in thecafeterias. GMS and LMShave been hit with somuch sickness, anything

to do with the dirty filthywater our monitors arecontinually wiping downthe tables with? Theyshould not have to dothis. Parents we are beingforced to now send inwipes to keep our kidshealthy? Whose decisionis this?

Thumbs downto theteacher complaining aboutexpectations from parents. We entrust you with theeducation of our children. We have the right as taxpayers to expect nothingless than a teachers best, and the right to assume

that our childrenare being taughtby individualswho want to getthe best out of ourchildren and tosee them succeed. The remedy forthat is not to shipthem off to privateschools so youdont have to dealwith them. Butthanks for inferringthat the publicschools are not onpar with the privateschools. Soundslike an indictmentagainst your effortor ability.

Thumbs downto the personcomplainingabout the BudgetCommittee. Youshould be moreupset with thedisorganizedadministration.Ill give you anexample: therewill be a warrantarticle to repave theplayground area atGMS. Then whydid they put up afence that will haveto come down todo that work? Ifyoure going tothrow shots at

Thumbs up/Thumbs down. Ithink its about timeHudson replacesits Postmaster andmanagement team. If enough peoplecall their congressmen, then the mailmay get delivered through rain, snow, sleet, and Dunkin Donuts.

Thumbs up/Thumbs down. Wewill no longer attempt to redeliver theHudson Post Offices mis-deliveredmail. You have screwed the Americanublic long enough with the expensiveForever Stamps which will forevercontinue to go up in price to pay for
