TRANSCRIPT
Huber has over 40 years of experience producing consistently high quality fire retardant additives for the plastics industry, producing both aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide on two continents. Huber also produces Kemgard® molybdate smoke suppressants and continues to innovate in developing its new Safire™ nitrogen-phosphate fire retardant (FR) technology.
In February 2016, J.M. Huber Corporation, through its Huber Engineered Materials (HEM) division, acquired Martinswerk GmbH and a 50% joint-venture position in Magnifin® magnesium hydroxide. With this acquisition, Huber has strengthened its global presence in the halogen-free flame retardant market.
Huber’s fire retardant manufacturing plants include four locations in the United States: Fairmount and Kennesaw, Georgia; Marblehead, Illinois; and Bauxite, Arkansas and two in Europe: Bergheim, Germany and Breitenau, Austria.

Huber Engineered Materials is your global source of non halogen fire retardants.
Huber’s aluminum hydroxide (marketed under the following brands: Martinal®, Hydral®, Micral®, SB, HN, ON, MoldX® and Hymod®) and magnesium hydroxide (Magnifin®, Zerogen® and Vertex®) fire retardant additives are halogen-free, environmentally friendly products used in a wide range of polymeric materials. The flame retardancy effect is based on the endothermic decomposition into aluminum oxide and water and magnesium oxide and water, respectively. Only non-toxic and non-corrosive decomposition product is formed during these processes.
During decomposition of aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide, considerable quantities of heat are consumed and hence withdrawn from combustion. The plastic is protected from a rapid thermal decomposition and the formation of flammable and combustible breakdown products is inhibited. The water vapor which is formed displaces the oxygen and functions as protective gas. A heat-resistant covering layer consisting of carbonized products and corresponding oxides is formed on the surface of the plastic inhibiting further combustion and reducing the smoke density by absorbing combustion products.
Aluminum hydroxide (also known as alumina trihydrate or ATH) and
magnesium hydroxide (MDH) differ due to thermal decomposition. While
aluminum hydroxide can be processed up to 200°C, magnesium hydroxide
decomposes at 320°C, and therefore, has a much higher processing window.

Huber Magnesium Hydroxides (MDH)
Magnifin® magnesium hydroxide was created for flame retardancy applications and is recommended when low smoke emission and high thermal stability are required. Magnifin® MDH grades are produced at the Magnifin® Magnesiumprodukt GmbH& Co KG site in Austria. The production process results in a high purity magnesium hydroxide with regular crystal form (hexagonal platelets) required for flame retardancy applications in plastic and rubber. Their low surface energy minimizes the tendency to form agglomerates.
Three untreated grades are offered, which vary by particle size and specific surface area. These grades disperse and process well in a variety of polymer systems. Additional grades with tailor-made surface treatments are available for specific applications and permit the production of compounds based on elastomers and thermoplastics, meeting the most stringent requirements.
Zerogen® magnesium hydroxide products are produced in the U.S. and are also designed for stringent applications such as the insulation layer in wire and cable applications.
Vertex® magnesium hydroxide products are designed for applications such as plastic pallets, EPDM, TPO roofing, jacketing compounds injection moulded parts and other thermoplastic and rubber applications.
