Introduction to the University of Florida

• The University was founded in 1853 with 102 students

• started as an agricultural school for boys. It later joined with a military school and expanded its

size. In 1925 it became co-educational and admitted the first female student.

since 2001 it has adopted the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification system

It has mandated that every new building built on this campus must meet a minimum of Silver LEED certification. A LEED accredited professional is required to be on staff for all building projects.

Green Starting Points are sustainable practices already in place or could be easily adopted to meet LEED-NC requirements due to the campus infrastructure. The HUB project benefited from being on campus and benefiting from the existing infrastructure of transportation and water efficiency practices in place.These credits attained were:

PROJECT DESIGN OBJECTIVES

1. The character defining features of this building are to remain1. The curved glass block wall on the north side2. The mezzanine level3. The stair between the main portion of the building and the food court.

2. To share spaces Office of Academic Technology and the International Center

- This could be the entrance lobby for the two areas, including the Technology Union. It would also be desirable to share conference rooms.

3. To plan the construction process as a multi-phase project, that can be easily broken into sensible scopes of work.

4. To obtain a LEED rating for remodeling/renovation of existing buildings. This will include among other considerations to meet the LEED criteria - a shower / changing room.

Prerequisite 1: Erosion and Sedimentation Control

• Intent• Reduce pollution from construction activities by controlling soil erosion, waterway

sedimentation and airborne dust generation.

• Responsible Team member: Bahar Armaghani • Status: To be Earned

• Measures Supporting Achievement• erosion and sedimentation control.• minimal impact to the surrounding site. • Prevent loss of soil during construction by storm water runoff and/or wind

erosion, including protecting topsoil by stockpiling for reuse.

Prevent sedimentation of storm sewer or receiving streams. Prevent polluting the air with dust and particulate matter.

The solar engineer, Robert Walpole, will provide a Certification Letter declaring whether the project follows local erosion and sedimentation control standards

Challenges & Solutions for Achievement

• the major renovations will be taken within the existing building therefore will be a minimal impact on the site. However the site of the construction crew parking will be reseeded with grass to restored to original condition when construction is finish.

• During the construction process the site will be monitored to insure minimal impact

results of EA Credit 1.

Challenges & Solutions for Achievement• Because of the historic nature of the project, many of the existing plans and sections of the buildings were incorrect. On several occasions utility pipes were discovered to not exist and or be located in different areas.
