1 Product Introduction

This section describes the product position, system application, and product features of the CG9812.

1.1 Product Position Huawei CG9812 Charging Gateway (hereinafter referred to as the CG9812) is developed for large traffic. It complies with the 3GPP standards. It is used for the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System and General Packet Radio Service (UMTS/GPRS) solutions.

The CG9812 is set between the Gateway GPRS Serving Node (GGSN) or the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) and the billing center (BC). It transfers the charging data records (CDRs) from the GSN to the BC. The CG9812 supports the R98, R99, R4, R5 ,R6 and R7 protocols.

The GGSN and the SGSN are both called the GSN.

The CG9812 provides the following functions:

l Collects the CDRs from the UMTS network entities. l Buffers the CDRs. l Processes the CDRs. l Transfers the CDRs to the BC in real time.

1.2 System Applications Figure 1-1 shows the typical networking of the CG9812.

In the UMTS or GPRS network, the CG9812 is a network element (NE) in a separate cabinet. It sits between the GSN and the BC to transfer the CDRs from the UMTS or GPRS NEs to the BC.

The CG9812 connects to the GSN and the BC over LAN or WAN. It provides the operation and maintenance (O&M) interfaces. It also can connect to the network management system (NMS) through LAN or WAN.

The LMT and the RMT are two types of maintenance terminals (MT).

As shown in Figure 1-1, in the UMTS/GPRS system, the CG9812 interworks with the SGSN, GGSN, NMS, LMT, and RMT.

1.2.1 SGSN The SGSN is an entity that provides packet data services. It forwards incoming and outgoing IP packets to the mobile stations (MSs) in the service area. The SGSN CDRs gathers the usage of wireless resources by users.

The CG9812 uses GTP' to receive the CDRs from the SGSN.

1.2.2 GGSN The GGSN is an entity that provides packet data services. It provides routing and encapsulation of the packet data between the GPRS or UMTS network and the external PDN. In the postpaid service, the GGSN CDRs records the usage of the external network by users.

The CG9812 uses GTP' to receive the CDRs from the GGSN.

1.2.3 Billing Center The CG9812 uses a separate 10M/100M network adapter to connect to the BC.

The CG9812 can communicate with the BC through the following protocols:

FTP When using FTP, the CG9812 supports two modes:

l PULL mode In PULL mode, the CG9812 acts as the server. The CDR collector is the client. The CDR collector gathers the CDRs from the CG9812.

l PUSH mode In PUSH mode, the CG9812 acts as the client. The CDR collector acts as the server. The CG9812 sends the CDRs to the BC.

FTAM When using FTAM, the CG9812 supports the PULL mode. It acts as the responder, while the CDR collector acts as the initiator. The CDR collector gathers the CDRs from the CG9812.

1.2.4 NMS and MT The CG9812 provides the MML interfaces to the NMS, LMT, and RMT.

The CG9812 consists of servers and clients. You can install a PC in the equipment room as the LMT. You can also install another PC in the NMC as the RMT. The CG9812 client application runs on the PCs.

1.3 Product Features This section describes the product features of the CG9812.

1.3.1 High Reliability

Two-node cluster The billing system is special in the network. It requires high reliability of the CG9812. For this purpose, the CG9812 uses a two-node cluster design in both hardware and software. If a server fails, the GSN redirects the CDRs to the other server.

Disk system The CG9812 server uses Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) to ensure that the following files and data are secure:

l Operating system (OS) of the CG9812 server l CG9812 server application l CDR files

Network backup The CG9812 can automatically back up CDR files to another server through WAN or LAN, to further improve the data security.

Auto control A monitor module is designed in the software. The monitor module can automatically start up the CG9812 in case of a power failure. The purpose is to ensure the normal running of the system when unattended.

1.3.2 Multi-Access The CG9812 can receive and process various CDR formats at the same time, store them separately, and provide them for the BC one by one.

1.3.3 Large Capacity The available capacity of the hard disks configured in the CG9812 determines its CDR buffering capability. With greater CDR buffering capability, the CG9812 can store more CDRs on itself and archive fewer CDRs in the billing center, which enhances the security of CDRs. Currently, the hard disks configured in the CG9812 provide a sufficient valid capacity to store the CDRs in at least seven days in the case of maximum subscriber quantity.

2 Hardware Architecture

This section describes the hardware configuration and functional principle of the CG9812.

2.1 Hardware Configurations The CG9812 uses HUAWEI N68-22 cabinet. It is a 19-inch wide cabinet compliant with the IEC297 standard.

Figure 2-1 shows the appearance of the N68-22 cabinet.

As shown in Figure 2-2, the CG9812 uses a separate cabinet. The cabinet holds the following parts:

2.1.1 CG9812 Server

l IBM x3650T is a type of server that the CG9812 uses. l The type of servers is changed frequently. This section takes IBM x3650T for example.

The CG9812 is a two-node cluster. Two CG9812 servers work in load sharing mode. Once a server fails, the other one continues to process the CDRs from the GSN. This ensures the continuity of services.

The CG9812 provides four network adapters to communicate with other devices.

Figure 2-3 shows the locations of the network adapters when the CG9812 uses IBM X3650T server. Also, Table 2-1 lists the purpose of each network adapter.

2.1.2 KVMS The CG9812 is configured with two servers. Therefore, a KVMS is installed in the cabinet. The KVMS aims to switches the LCD monitor, keyboard, and mouse between the servers.

2.1.3 LAN Switch The LAN Switches enable the CG9812 to communicate with other devices. HUAWEI Quidway product series are preferred as the LAN Switches that work with the CG9812. The LAN Switches uses the network bridge to connect to the #1 and #2 network adapters of the CG9812 to build up the redundant links between the CG9812 and GSN.

2.1.4 PDB The PDB in the integrated management cabinet supplies the power for the CG9812. The nominal voltage is –48 V DC.

2.2 Functional Principles Figure 2-4 shows how the two-node CG9812 connects to other devices.

2.2.1 Communicating with the GSN

Communications solution The GSN sends the CDRs to the CG9812 through the LAN Switch. Each CG9812 server opens an IP address to the GSN.

The CG9812 uses GTP' to receive the CDRs from the GSN through the Ga interface.

Implementation mechanism The CG9812 connects to the GSN through #1 and #2 network adapters.

For description purpose, name the two CG9812 servers igwb0 and igwb1.

The connection between igwb0 and the SGSN are described as follows:

l #1 network adapter of igwb0 connects to the SGSN through LAN Switch 0. l #2 network adapter of igwb0 connects to the SGSN through LAN Switch 1. l Two core LAN Switches interworks with each other through the cascade cable.

The connection between igwb0 and the GGSN are described as follows:

l #1 network adapter of igwb1 connects to the GGSN through LAN Switch 0. l #2 network adapter of igwb1 connects to the GGSN through LAN Switch 1. l Two core LAN Switches interworks with each other through the cascade cable.

Obtaining CDRs from the GSN The internal timer of the GSN triggers the process that sends the CDRs automatically. The timer monitors the CDR pool. If it finds CDRs, it sends them to the CG9812. The software sets the timer to the millisecond level. Therefore, the GSN are considered to send the CDRs in real time.

Sorting CDRs The CG9812 saves the CDRs in /var/frontsave/R6. These CDRs are original CDRs. In the path, R6 is the access point name. This is an example. You can set the access point name in the igwb.ini configuration file.

Based on the sorting and conversion conditions, the CG9812 sorts and converts the original CDRs into final CDRs. This process is called CDR processing. The processed CDRs are final CDRs.

Before generating the final CDRs, the CG9812 creates a temporary file as a buffer. It generates formal CDR files based on the trigger conditions (file size or generation interval).

2.2.2 Communicating with the BC The CG9812 server communicates with the BC through #3 network adapter. The BC can then gather the CDRs. The communication protocol can be FTP, FTAM or GTP'.

Typically, the BC accesses the two servers at the same time. The two servers provide the same virtual IP address for the BC.

2.2.3 Communicating with the MT and NMS The CG9812 provides the MML interraces and connects to the NMS and MT through #0 network adapter.

#0 network adapter of the two servers must be in the same network segment as the MT and NMS.

3 Software Architecture

This section describes the key terminologies, overall architecture and service process of the CG9812.

3.1 Key Terminologies This section describes the key terminologies of the CG9812. Correct understanding of the key terminologies will facilitate the use and maintenance of the CG9812.

3.1.1 Access Point To access the GSN, the CG9812 uses the concept of access point. Each access point corresponds to an ap_proc process. This process realizes the modules that communicate with the switches and the modules that store and convert the CDRs.

3.1.2 Channel Channel is a logical concept. A channel is a combination of CDR processing mode and storage folders that match a certain sorting condition. Each channel corresponds to a CDR storage path. Only the backsave path has channels.

3.1.3 Original CDR Original CDRs are the CDRs that the CG9812 has gathered from the GSN but not yet processed.

Original CDRs are saved as files with a fixed size (3 MB by default, configurable). These files are called original CDR files.

3.1.4 Final CDR Final CDRs are the CDRs that the CG9812 has processed (sorted, converted, and consolidated).

Final CDRs can be saved as files with a fixed size or generation interval. These files are called final CDR files.

3.1.5 Format Library The format library is the key that the CG9812 uses to convert the CDRs. The CG9812 has a format conversion module, namely, a dynamic link library (DLL) and a series of format configuration files.

3.2 Overall Architecture The CG9812 is a client/server architecture that supports multiple processes and threads.

Based on separate services, the CG9812 sets the thread modules. Then the thread modules with most related service functions are combined into one process. So the entire software forms a multi-process and multi-thread architecture. For the communication modes between processes, the CG9812 adopts the client/server mode (currently, this is the most mature application mode). Specially, the CG9812 has one process as the core process with other processes as sub-processes so that one process can schedule and monitor the sub-processes of other services.

The overall software architecture of the CG9812 is shown in Figure 3-1.

3.3 Service Processes As shown in Figure 3-1, the CG9812 server consists of five processes:

l Kernel process l Access point process l Operation and maintenance process l Cluster process l Parameter configuration process

Except the parameter configuration console, the other four processes each contain the following two modules:

l Management module This module manages and dispatches the internal modules of a process.

l Message forwarding module This module releases the intra- and inter-process communication and forwards messages.

3.3.1 Kernel Process The kernel process is the core of the software. It acts as the TCP/IP server of the other processes. It starts, stops, and monitors the access point process, the operation and maintenance process.

3.3.2 Access Point Process The access point process incorporates the main service functions of the CG9812, including CDR receiving, CDR processing, and CDR storage. The service functions are integrated to be a network module, a front disk module, a CDR processing module, and a back disk module. The four modules constitute a CDR processing flow, in which the service logic is uni-directional and can be cut down, as shown in Figure 3-2. (The arrows stand for the flow directions of the CDR data.)

3.3.3 Operation and Maintenance Process The operation and maintenance process integrates the operability and maintainability functions of the CG9812.

3.3.4 Cluster Process It starts and manages the kernel process.

3.3.5 Parameter Configuration Process The parameter configuration process is the parameter configuration module of the CG9812. The CG9812 supports remote parameter configuration through the GUI of the parameter configuration console.

3.3.6 BS Process The CG9812 uses the BS process (bs_proc) to transfer the CDRs only when GTP' is used.

4 System Functions

This section describes the main functions of the CG9812, including service functions and operation and maintenance functions.

4.1 Service Functions Service functions include the following contents.

4.1.1 CDR Processing Function The CG9812 system sorts the original CDRs as required. The different types of CDRs can be sorted and consolidated to different storage directories in accordance with the pre-defined sorting conditions, for example, sorting by CDR type.

4.1.2 Flexible Billing Interface The CG9812 system can communicate with the billing center through FTP or FTAM. The CG9812 system supports configuring CDR file name, file size, and file generation time. The CG9812 system supports flexibly converting CDR format.

4.1.3 Reliable Switchover Functions The CG9812 system supports automatic switchover and manual switchover of the two nodes.

4.1.4 Comprehensive Alarm Functions The CG9812 system provides a variety of alarms, such as medium space alarm, file read/write error alarm, dual-system switchover alarm, CDR collection timeout alarm, and heartbeat interruption alarm.

4.1.5 CDR Network Backup The CG9812 system can back up the CDRs in real time to another computer over the network. The purpose is to improve the security of the data.

4.2 Operation and Maintenance Functions The CG9812 provides the following operation and maintenance functions.

4.2.1 User Management The system provides functions to add and delete an operator account, and modify and query operator information.

4.2.2 Software Management The system provides functions to query information about the software version of the CG9812 server and the client.

4.2.3 CDR Storage Settings What can be set includes storage paths for original CDRs and final CDRs, size of a final CDR file, generation duration of a final CDR file, and buffer expiration of CDRs.

4.2.4 Routine Maintenance

Log management The system provides log browse and query functions. Log of a specified user in specified time can be queried. The system log can be queried.

CDR browse and query CDRs can be queried according to CDR type, date, subscriber number, and conversation duration.

Performance monitoring The system supports monitoring the memory space, hard disk space, and CPU usage in real time.

Debugging The running status of the system can be displayed in real time.

Protocol tracing The system provides functions to trace the message flow inside the system and the message flow between the CG9812 and the GSN.
