SOME DEFINITIONS - CONVENTIONAL

“Plagiarism is passing off a source's information, ideas, or words as your own by omitting to cite them, an act of lying, cheating, and stealing. Plagiarus means kidnapper, in Latin, because in antiquity plagiarii were pirates who sometimes stole children:” Appendix F: Academic Conduct, Academic Honesty,

and Student Grievance Procedures in the Kansas State University Faculty Handbook

SOME DEFINITIONS - CONVENTIONALSOME DEFINITIONS - CONVENTIONAL

“Plagiarism: is using or copying the work of others (whether written, printed or in any other form) without acknowledgement in any coursework orRepeating work previously submitted for another assignment without full acknowledgement of the extent to which that previous work has been used."

Plagiarism could also be done by disturbing issue among academic societies across the world.

More and more students in the higher education levels are resorting to plagiarism to complete assignments, tasks and research papers. In fact, many websites are established to accommodate this need.

Research papers are made available for free or at a price online. Despite students having ample warnings, both written and verbal, the rates of plagiarism has increased rather than decreased.

Current Situation

What will happen if someone caught plagiaries?

The act, whether intentionally or unintentionally, may result in the severe punishment of being expelled from an institution.

Less major cases may simply result in lowering a student's grade in the subject involved. Regardless of severe warnings to students, cases of plagiarism seem to be on the rise.

Plagiarism in China

In China:Plagiarism is common in Chinese college, from students to professors. Although plagiarism will result in failing grade and be expelled from the class, it still did not deter the students from plagiarizing.

- Example from The Scourge of Plagiarism in China, By Terence Chen, April 29, 2011

The hot topic today in China's academic is the revelation of the scandal in which Li Lianshan, a former prominent professor from Xi'an Jiaotong University, copied research analysis from others. The data on the economic benefits of his work was also found rigged, as the Ministry of Science and Technology recently confirmed. Li has been stripped of a top national science award by the Ministry.

It isn't the scandal per se that is disturbing. When six retired colleagues found out about Li Lianshan's plagiarism and reported it to the school three years ago, nobody paid any attention. Li's colleagues said that the university tried to persuade them to take back their accusations in order to "save school's face" and "save China's face." The unnamed "school leader" also said to them that "it is not easy to see our school being placed among the top of the Chinese universities ranking, so please do not tarnish the school's reputation."

The request was refused by the six retirees when Li Lianshan agreed to share the award prize with the six colleagues to shut them up. The school continued to cover up the scandal and didn't sack Li until a TV program reported it to the public last year.

SERIOUS?

in other countries, plagiarism is also a serious issue in China. When students are reported cheating in their exam, the consequence is failing grade. They will also be in danger of being expelled from class.

However many cases of plagiarism will not be reported. As I mentioned in the example, some colleges concern about their reputation, so they decide to cover the plagiarism and keep silence. I also experienced a lot and heard a lot from my friends that many students, who were caught cheating in exam by their teachers, gave their teachers money and then they will not be reported to the school.

The Americans' views toward the Plagiarism

In the United States, plagiarism is similar to a theft and has potentially severe consequences, such as suspension or even expulsion from schools. Al Jimiad suggests that America's individualistic culture leads to differences in plagiarism ideas.

The U.S. culture views a work as an individual's property and thus requires citation to show where the idea came from.

Back home at the UAE plagiarism is a big issue. The government gets involved and you might face jail time. And might also, not studying on public school. And they also put you in the black list.

HOW SERIOUS PLAGIARISM IS IN UAE? First of all if you get caught cheating the

punishment depends on the teacher and the school and it could be from a zero in the test or full termination or jail time.

So it’s not a universal rule, some teachers kick you out of school, some get the government involved, some just warn you and talk to your parents. So you really do not know what you’re facing.

Page 14: Hu Junhao Bob Alabd. “Plagiarism: Unoriginal Sin” Daniel Finkelstein, Quotations, 2005, p205 “ The secret of creativity is knowing how to hide your sources

my school handled plagiarism strictly the suspended right away and then you could get kicked out or you can get another chance but you will be under supervision. If it’s a big issues that the cheating was done during a final test you are more likely to get terminated.

If you got kicked out of the school you will not be able to attend any public school and you will have to go to private school which is not free.
