Forces and Energy

3TS 2013-14

How The World Works

Page 2: HTWW: Forces and Energy 3TS -13-14

Central Idea:The way objects move depends on a variety of factors, including their size, shape and the forces acting on them.

Learner Profile: Inquirers, Thinkers, Communicators, Open-minded

Attitudes: Curiosity, independence, Enthusiasm

Page 3: HTWW: Forces and Energy 3TS -13-14

Forces can be exerted by one object on another through direct contact or from a distance

Motion is the product of an unbalanced force Forces act upon all objects affecting how these

objects move and change Science involves making predictions and describing

patterns and relationships Science knowledge helps people to understand the

effect of their actions In a fair test the conditions are identical except for

the one variable being tested.

What lines of inquiry will define the scope of the inquiry into the central idea?

Provocations

1. Parachute

Page 5: HTWW: Forces and Energy 3TS -13-14

PARACHUTE ACTIVITYTHOUGHTS BASED ON THE ACTIVITY:

-HOW THINGS REACT WITH WHAT WE DO WITH THEM- ERIN

-MOVEMENT- CHRISTOPHER

-WEIGHT- TRISTAN, KIANA

-HOW CAN YOU MOVE THINGS WITHOUT JUST PUSHING THEM WITH YOUR HANDS- ANNA, JOONG GUN

-PHYSICS- KIND SCIENCE- WEIGHT AND GRAVITY AND -HOW STUFF WORKS- TONY

-HOW YOU USE SOMETHING WITHOUT HAVING CONTROL OF THE OBJECT- MALY, SONNY

KEY WORDS/ IDEAS: -FORCE -WEIGHT - GRAVITY -STRENGTH - CONTROL - ENERGY - MOVEMENTS: PUSH, PULL, THROWING, TILTING, LIFTING, LOWERING, UP, DOWN - POWER - HEIGHT - RHYTHM/BEAT - SHOOTING - CATCHING - HOLDING - FLICKING -WACKING/HITTING

Provocations

2. ScenariosHow would you solve the problem? I.e. Move a sleeping elephant, put a flag on the ES building, keep a heavy door open. Rank the ideas:

What does our CI mean?We highlighted words we didn’t understand and reworded the CI to one we all understood.

3TS Main Idea:

The way items move depends on a lot of different things including their size, shape

and the forces doing something to the items.

Teacher posed problems

I give person A 1 hour and person B 30 minutes to bake a cake. Is this ok?Turn and discussOverheard:Its not really fairWhat skills do they have? Are the cakes the same size?Do all cakes need the same time?

What do we think?• Depends on which kind of cake- Tony• No because the time is not fair one gets to keep cooking – Christopher• No fair because they both should get enough time and depends on what time and how big the cakes are-

Lilly Bea• Unfair because 2 persons do not have the same time to cook the cakes- Jeongseo• Fair because the person B can cook a little cake -Joong Gun• Depends on the size of the cakes and the skills of the 2 people- Erin• I think it’s unfair because of the time -Daisy• Unfair because maybe they don’t have the correct tools -Tony

What did we test?*Magnetism: We looked at the size and shape of the magnet and recorded what they attracted.

Page 12: HTWW: Forces and Energy 3TS -13-14

*Friction: We observed the affect of different surfaces on how far an object can travel.

Page 13: HTWW: Forces and Energy 3TS -13-14

*Paper Planes: We looked at how size, shape or weight affects the distance a paper plane flies

Page 14: HTWW: Forces and Energy 3TS -13-14

What definitions did we need and find for this

unit?

Water Resistance

Question: How does the shape of an object affect how much water resistance it has on it?

Turn and discuss what you think what you will do in this experiment and what you think it will look like.

Page 17: HTWW: Forces and Energy 3TS -13-14

*Class discussion to confirm and clarify experiment

*You will need to make 3D shapes from you groups piece of plasticine.

*What 3D shape will be the quickest and what will be the slowest?

*Write up your experiment and work in groups of 2 or 3s to conduct it.

The Science Guy came to UNIS and we did extra experiments using forces!
