The Giants and Eli Manningagreed to a six-year, $97.5million contract extensionyesterday, which makes him thehighest-paid NFL quarterbackper year. Manning, though, wasn't even a top 10 gunslingerlast season.

Is Eli insanely underrated, or justunworthy of the $106.9 millionhe’ll make over the next sevenseasons?

“Sixteen million dollars perseason seems absurd,” said

“Mick,” in a post on the Giantsblog bigblue101.com.

The only player making moreper season is Carolina Panthers

defensive end Julius Peppers, who signed a one-year, $16.7million deal in June.

Manning went from Super

Bowl MVP two seasons ago tothe goat in last season’s earlyplayoff exit. He’s just 3-4 all-timein the playoffs, hardly in TomBrady or Ben Roethlisberger ter-ritory. Yet, Manning now makesmore than both of them.

Sure, he’s been solid, just notspectacular. And bland. Stableand bland, though, may be justwhat the Giants need. For a teambattling off-field distractions, such as the Plaxico Burressshooting, Manning is a welcomeface out front. METRO

“I want to be sure peopledon’t confuse what Bill did, which was a private hu-manitarian mission to bringthese young women home, with our policy, which con-tinues to be one that giveschoices to North Korea,”Clinton said. “They can con-tinue on the path they areon, or perhaps they will

now be willing to start talk-ing to us within the contextof the six-party talks aboutthe international desire tosee them denuclearized.”

The administration toldthe North Korean govern-ment that Clinton’s visitwould be a private, hu-manitarian mission uncon-nected to other issues be-tween the two countries.Clinton met with Kim JongIl for about an hour and 15minutes. BLOOMBERG

Car manufacturers are all inthe race to go eco thesedays, and now even theworld’s armies are gettingin on the act.

Making military transporta-tion greener is a no-brainer— as nations’ economiessuffer, their equipmentneeds to be more efficientand cheaper to run. Fuel-ef-ficiency is key when troopsare deployed in remote des-tinations, and fuel needs tobe shipped in. But even justfueling the vehicles thatrun the tanks is a logisticalnightmare, points out PaulSkalny, Director at the US

This spring the

TARDEC showed off a col-lection of eco-friendly mili-tary vehicles to CaliforniaGov. Arnold Schwarzeneg-ger, including a diesel-elec-tric hybrid that gives thecar up to six miles of silentmobility.

The US Army isn’t the on-ly one to go eco, though;other armed forcesare thinkingahead, teamingup with civil-ian compa-

When news broke lateTuesday night that PaulaAbdul would not bereturning as a judge onthe ninth season of“American Idol,” most of

the nation’s televisioncritics were gathered

at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena,

Calif. for the an-nual TelevisionCritics Associa-tion summerpress tour.Abdul shocked

us all by confirm-ing her departure

on Twitter: “I’llmiss nurturing all

the new talent, but mostof all being a part of ashow that I helped fromday 1 become an interna-tional phenomenon,” shewrote.

Fox soon responded in astatement, saying thesinger was “an importantpart of the ‘American Idol’family over the last eightseasons and we are sad-dened that she has decid-ed not to return to theshow.” The announce-ment came on the heels ofKara DioGuardi being con-firmed as a returningjudge, joining Simon Cow-ell and Randy Jackson fora second season.

I was eating dinner witha number of TV scribeswhen we first learned ofthe news, and our friendAndy Dehnart of Reality

Blurred.com got the exclu-sive scoop from an em-ployee at Fremantle, theshow’s production compa-ny, that Abdul wasn’tasked to return after de-manding a $20 millionsalary.

On the effect Abdul’s ab-sence will have on theshow, perhaps TV Guide’sSenior Writer Damian Hol-brook summed it up best:“Losing Paula takes awaysome of the water coolerfun of the show, becausemore than even some ofthe performances, it’s hercrazy talk we all remem-ber and rehash the day af-ter,” he said. “Plus, thejudges’ table needs the bal-ance of her sweet ram-bling comments forRandy’s canned critiquesand Simon’s mustache-twirling villainy.”

Marc Lamont [email protected]

Last week, one of our nation’s most enigmatic, controversial and influential figures passedaway. Rev. Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II, betterknown as “Reverend Ike,” died at the age of 74.Ike, one of America’s first major televangelists,

is largely remembered for drawing millions of Ameri-cans into his “gospel of health and wealth” thatpromised material success for true believers.Although Reverend Ike has faded from the publicconversation in recent years, his impact on Americanreligious life has undoubtedly endured.

Over the past few decades, many American preach-ers have gained national prominence by offering theirown updated versions of Reverend Ike’s gospel of pros-perity. Some, like Creflo Dollar and Fred Price, flashexpensive clothing, jewelry and cars with the recklessabandon of a Top 40 rapper. Others, like Joel Osteen, operate as life coaches whose scriptureless sermonsare more devoted to selling self-help products thanpromoting righteous living. By reducing social miseryto a lack of faith, these preachers reinforce the tiredconservative argument that the problems of the poorare largely self-inflicted. They also promote the neo-liberal belief that all social problems can be resolvedby expanding capitalism and increasing consumption. As a result, these churches displace traditional narra-tives about collective struggle, sacrifice or redemptivesuffering with demands that the poor “get right” withGod by accumulating things for themselves.

Unlike Reverend Ike, today’s cadre of prosper-ity preachers are not on the margins ofmainstream Christianity. Instead they arebecoming leaders of a mainstream churchmovement that has grown increasingly un-

responsive to the social conditions of its members. Oneof the more disappointing examples of the New BlackChurch’s profit-driven cowardice came in January 2005when President George W. Bush spoke to the First Bap-tist Church of Glenarden, a mega church in Maryland.Pastor John Jenkins, an affirmative action advocate, re-fused to publicly challenge the president’s stance onthe subject because he considered it inappropriate totake a stand against the president’s policy from thepulpit. By eliminating protest from the church’s agen-da, except for when they’re echoing Republicantalking points regarding so-called “moral issues,” theseleaders effectively strip the church of itstransformative potential while enhancing their ownearning capacity. In the wake of Reverend Ike’s death,we must confront the possibility that many churcheshave gained the whole world but lost their souls.

Marc Lamont Hill is associate professor of education and African-American studies at Columbia University.

Reverend Ike’s loss is great

The race is onYankees eye first win in season series, Sox eye first place

The heat is on the Red Soxto recapture first place. The pressure is on the Yankees to win a gameagainst their biggest rival.

Despite the Yankees’ 0-8record against Boston thisseason, it’s the Yankeeswho are in first place inthe ultra-competitive ALEast. The Bombers hold ata 2 ½ game edge going in-to the four-game show-down that begins tonightat Yankee Stadium.

While the Yankees havethe small edge in thestandings, the pitchingmatchups appear even.

The Yankees seeminglyhave the edge tonight andSaturday with Joba Cham-berlain and CC Sabathiaopposing John Smoltz andClay Buchholz, respective-ly. The Red Sox appear tohave a slight advantage Fri-day and Sunday with JoshBeckett and Jon Lestersquaring off against A.J.Burnett and Andy Pettitte, respectively.

The Bombers will try tomaintain an edge offen-sively by packing a left-handed lineup againstSmoltz and Buchholz.

Left-handed hitters havehit .403 off Smoltz in sev-en starts. Five of thosegames were against sub-.500 teams, so the Yan-kees’ lineup, which is sec-ond in the majors in runs, should do some damage.

Meanwhile, lefties arehitting .366 off Buchholz.

While those are poten-tial problems for the RedSox, Beckett and Lestercould stifle the Yankees.

Beckett is 9-4 lifetimeagainst the Yankees; 6-2 inhis last nine outings, in-cluding six innings of one-hit ball in Boston on June 9.

Lester is 3-0 in six career

starts against the Yankeesand two of those wins havebeen in the Bronx.

“We’ve got over 100games to go,” Yankees out-fielder Johnny Damon said

MLB. On a day when thetalk should have beenabout another muscularperformance by a suddenlyrevived offense, the focusinstead shifted to morefelled bodies.

Only the Mets.Starting pitcher Jon

Niese tore his right ham-string in yesterday’s 9-0win over the St.Louis Cardinals.Niese, who leftthe game after1 2/3 inningswill have sur-gery and is outfor the season.

Niese covered first dur-ing an attempted 3-6-1double play in the secondinning and stretched to re-ceive a throw from short-stop Angel Berroa. Follow-ing the play, he threw awarm-up pitch, promptlycollapsed and had to becarried off the field.

“When he went to firstbase, he said he kind ofstretched it a little bit and[said] he was OK,” managerJerry Manuel said.

Gary Sheffield joined inon the hamstring train, straining his while round-ing first base in the sixth. The 40-year-old, who hadjust returned from the dis-abled list, is listed as day-to-day.

While Sheffield expectsto be back, Jose Reyes maynot. Reyes, who hasn’tplayed since May 20, flewto New York yesterday tohave specialists examinewhat was termed “differ-ent” pain in his injuredhamstring. The Mets short-stop has significant scartissue and inflammationbehind the right knee, which has caused contin-ued pain. He will remain inNew York for manual phys-ical therapy in an effort tobreak up the scar tissueand reduce the inflamma-tion, the team said.

“It’s been a difficult timefor us,” Manuel said.

FANTASY FOOTBALL. You knowwho doesn’t think aboutWeeks 15 and 16 on draftday? Losers.

If you expect to be in theplayoffs and competing towin leagues, you will wantto have good matchups atthe end of December.

How can you know whatthe good matchups will beby then? It’s often saidtraining camp is too earlyto predict how good anNFL defenseis goingto be.False!

Overthe lasttwo sea-

sons, the top 10 defensesin the league (yards pergame) only has one newteam (Minnesota). Therewas a little more fluctua-tion at the bottom of thebarrel, but the usual sus-pects were there.

So we can make edu-cated guesses.Pittsburghisn’t suddenlygoing to goswiss cheese

MIKE BLOOMBERG: STRONG, INDEPENDENT LEADERSHIP TO KEEP NYC MOVING.

What Mike Bloomberg’s plan to reform mass transit means to your neighborhood:

“ Our reform plan means faster, safer and better subway and bus service. If the MTA adopts our plan, it’ll make a real difference in the lives of the 7.5 million people who use the transit system every day.”

—Mike Bloomberg

Cut $247 million from the MTA bureaucracy and use the money for better bus & subway service.

Keep commuters better informed with a 311 Transit Hotline and “Countdown Clocks” that show when the next bus or subway will arrive.

Improve the quality of our commute by keeping subway stations clean and graffiti-free.

Implement faster overhead toll collection on all MTA bridges and tunnels to speed up traffic and reduce congestion.
