Final Review Meeting – Brussels, 22 April 200816

Final Comments…

• The area covered by VD-H is relatively new and, as such, researches around it is still quite heterogeneous

• After a relatively slow start, we managed to gather around VD-H a critical mass of researchers working on short reach optical network, transmission and components

Final Review Meeting – Brussels, 22 April 200817

…Final Comments

• During the period of this e-Photon/ONe+, Home and Short-Reach Network have gathered increased interest in all fields of communication technology

• Some operator research centers, such as FT, are envisioning “optical backbones” inside our apartments:– Plastic Optical Fibre to provide a point to point architecture

suitable for already constructed houses where the installation of a new cable can be performed by the user itself

– Silica Fibre infrastructure for new houses where the optical cables will be installed in ducts running in the walls at construction time.
