December 2010

One of my favorite parts of the Advent/Christmas season is the music. Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without some of our favorite old carols. Why do certain pieces stand out for us? The tune? The words? Associations we may have with that piece?

One of my LEAST favorite Christmas carols as a child was “O Little Town of Bethlehem” (UMH #230). Why? Because as a relatively new piano student, I had to play it on the piano, and it was full of sharps and flats thrown in as ‘acciden-tals’. That made it difficult.

Phillips Brooks (1835-1893), the author of the words of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” was a giant of a man (he stood 6’6”), and enjoyed a distinguished career in the ministry, serving churches in Philadelphia and Boston. Though he remained a bachelor, he was fond of children, and wrote the words of this hymn for a children’s program in his church.

In 1865, Rev. Brooks spent Christmas Eve in Bethlehem, where he worshipped in the Church of the Nativity, built over the site where it is thought that Jesus was born. This hymn was written in 1868, remembering his experience in Bethlehem… “O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie!”

We, too, had the privilege of visiting Bethlehem in the Christmas season ~ December 27th, 1998. (Hard to forget the date, since it was our 19th wedding anniversary!) Bethlehem was hardly ‘still’. It was hustling and bustling, with merchants out on the streets, selling their goods to tourists. Much construction was going on because HUGE celebrations were planned for Bethlehem for the year 2000.

On the one hand, it was thrilling to walk where Jesus had walked (we also visited Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea, Jericho, and, of course Jerusalem.) On the other hand, I felt a sense of emptiness. Places deemed ‘holy’ seemed to have become merely ‘tourist traps’, with pressure to buy things. I was ruminating on these feelings with a priest who shared my seat on a bus, and he expressed the same thing. Then, almost together, we quoted the same scripture: “He is not here, he is risen!” (Matthew 28:6) We would not find Christ’s pres-ence in a PLACE.

The message is the same for Christmas as for Easter … “He is not here, he is risen!” We will not find Jesus in a manger, sleeping on straw, with animals round about mooing and cooing. We will not find him in a place, nor in a time (as on Christmas). We can remember the circumstances of his birth, and enjoy

hearing about the shepherds and the wise men and the angels, and about Mary and Joseph. But we will not find Jesus in a cattle stall in Bethlehem today. That is not where he is found. Then where IS he to be found? Jesus Christ is found in the hearts of the faithful.

It is nice to celebrate that Christ was born in Bethlehem so many years ago, but what is truly important is that we not only remember, but that we re-create that experience for ourselves. What matters is that he is born in our hearts. And that can happen at any time - not just Christmas.

“How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given; so God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven.

No ear my hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray;

cast out our sin and enter in, BE BORN IN US today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;

O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!”

May the peace and the joy of this season be yours always!

Blessings,Rev. Kit

The Gathering TableFirst Baptist Church, 124 So. Main St., Brockport, NY

A free community dinner, will be heldon Sunday, December 19, 2010

from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.

All are welcome to join us for a hot meal and conversation.

A report from NomiNAtioNs I wish to offer a big ‘thanks’ to our Nominating Team for a job well-done. On

November 9th, the Church Conference voted on the 2011 officers for the Brockport UMC. (a list will be in the January newsletter). And I wish to thank all those who are willing to serve as leaders in our congregation - those who have served, and those who have agreed to serve in the future. YOU are what makes our church strong!

We still have a few opportunities for leadership and service. Please pray about how you might be able to give of yourselves - and let me know if you might be interested in serving in any of the following ways:

a. Christian Education Chair: (to coordinate the Sunday School, make sure curriculum is ordered, and that we have teachers in place)

b. Stewardship Chair: (to coordinate our fall financial ‘campaign’; to inspire people - year long - to consider how we use our time and talents for Christ)

c. Trustees, Class of 2011: (to be part of a team that oversees the physical and financial assets of our congregation)

d. Hospitality Team, committee member: (to help serve funeral refreshments, etc. We are not limited to how many can serve here - the more, the merrier, and the easier for all!)

e. Worship Team, Class of 2013: (to be part of the team that oversees all of the details involved in our worship experiences.)

f. Outreach Committee: September Fest: (to work with the community in put-ting together a fun day of activities that seeks to ‘put our church out there’, working with the other “Inner Village” congregations, coordinating local organizations in a fun day of PR and service.)

g. Outreach Committee: Dinner Chair: (to coordinate church-wide dinners, such as the Strawberry Festival at Garland, our chicken bbq, possible roast beef, ham and/or turkey dinners. This is separate from funeral refresh-ments.)

Please prayerfully consider how you might serve in one (or more!) of these posi-tions. God bless! --- Rev. Kit

Kudu’s to our youth who took part in the amazing production of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” at the Brockport High School recently: Serafina Breslawski, Hannah Cohen, Lyssa Fradella, Rachel Smith, Hannah Applebaum and Corinne Killenbeck, Alma Haddock.

Because of the Christmas season, the next meeting of the Worship team will be not be held until the end of January. Because of this, we ask now that you plan to help us out in a BIG way by staying after service on sunday, January 9th, 2011, to help us “un-decorate” our church. This information is for advance planning purposes…please mark your calendars. It’s a big job made much smaller by many hands. And, after all, it is YoUR church!

Also, in the interim, if you have any concerns about our worship process, please contact Gary thomas, sandy mosher, or Rev. Kit at any point.

January 22nd there will be a “Dessert social" from 6:30pm-8:00pm in the Fellowship Hall. Following dessert, there will be a time for fun and fellowship. Care will be provided for small children. Mark your 2011 calendar now and watch for a sign-up sheet to be posted on the office window in January. The Outreach Committee.

CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS FROMYOUR WORSHIP TEAM

If you watched some of the footage last October of the Chilean miners coming up out of the mine after their 69 days in captivity, you might have noticed that many of them were wearing the same dirty tee-shirt over their really cool green jump-suits. Why would they do that?

On the front of their shirts was written:“Gracias, Señor”-- thanks be to God.

On the backs of the shirts was a verse from Psalm 95:4: “In God’s hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are God’s also.” And below that, the shirts said: “To God be the honor and the glory.”

And, if you caught it, on the sleeve was written simply: “Jesús”.

The green jump suits were pretty neat. But it was even neater to see these min-ers witness to their faith, after all they had been through!

Dear Friends in Faith:

As in the past, I am “plugging in” names of those who have expressed a willing-ness to contribute their time for this important role in our weekly worship services. If you have a conflict with a particular date, please attempt to change with another volunteer. I have attempted to not overburden anyone. It would be helpful if you let Jean Brien know of any changes so she can change her master copy and include the correct information in the weekly bulletins. She would need to know the Wednesday before the Sunday in question. Her e-mail is [email protected] and the church phone number is 637-4240. Please arrive at the sanctuary at least 15 minutes early on your scheduled Sunday(s) for any last minute instructions from the Worship Coordinator, Sandy Mosher, or from Pastor Snyder.

Again, thank you for your continued service and contributions to our worship services. As Lay Leader I would like to express my personal appreciation for your cooperation; hopefully you will continue to do so in the years to come. As is the custom, a copy of the schedule will be posted on the Church office window.

We are blessed with a rich heritage as Brockport’s first church. We offer great programs in music, Christian education, outreach, and small group ministries. We have a dedicated staff led by Rev Kit and a team of volunteers whose faith in Jesus Christ is solid and unwavering.

We reach out to the local community via active support of the annual CROP Walk, the ecumenical clothing and food shelters. We reach out to the global community with our support of UMCOR and paying our apportionments in full to the Conference. Your generous gifts make a difference at home and abroad.

Year-end is a time to take stock and reflect on our many blessings. And it seems only natural to express our gratitude with a gift. Year-end is also the Christmas sea-son. For Christians this is an opportunity to give in gratitude for God’s greatest gift to us, Jesus Christ. Why not make a special effort to honor Him in your giving this Christmas season.

It maybe the most meaningful gift you give?

A prayer to reflect:

Lord, we have so much to be grateful for in our daily lives. Help us to see and hear wher e we can be at our best in our church family. Help us to listen to your vision and mission for our lives and for the life of our church community. Amen.

May God bless you as you make an expression of your faith.

StewardSHip Recently you received a Stewardship letter from Rev Kit and Bruce Rex asking

you to make a pledge for our 2011church programs. Many of you have all ready made a pledge. We thank you for your generous support.

As of this date our 2011 pledges are less than last year. If you have yet to make a pledge, we ask you to consider making a pledge now for 2011. Or maybe you would prefer to make a special gift to honor a friend or loved one.

Your pledges and gifts helps the church leadership plan the programs and finances for the coming year. We seek your support.

We have a fine history of supporting our church programs and maintaining our church buildings. Let us continue as we serve the Brockport community in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

CRAFTY MINDS AND TALENTED HANDS NEEDED DEUX

We are still in need of a person or persons to agree to tackle these projects, so we are repeating this plea for a second month:

The Worship team is searching for a person or persons who are skilled in crafts-manship or just in planning to undertake two distinct woodworking projects. First, we are searching for someone to make us some sort of rack on which to hang our new name-tags. We are currently using a small table which is lacking in space and is cumbersome and in-the-way. We’d like to have someone design a rack that could be folded up or otherwise enabled to be moved out of the way after weekly worship.

Secondly, we are searching for someone to make us some sort of storage com-partment in which to hang our many church banners. We currently use a hall closet near the upstairs bathroom, but it lacks adequate space to hang the banners properly.

If anyone would care to tackle either or both of these projects, please contact Worship team Chairman Gary thomas for specifics.

THANKS SOOOOOOOOO MUCH! The bUm Players would like to thank everyone who helped to make our recent

“whodunit” murder mystery a true success this year. We realize this took place back in October, but we wanted to let you know how grateful we are for all your support through your presence, your “presents”, and your prayers. Thanks to your support, the brockport Kiwanis Club was able to turn a very nice profit which is earmarked to be used to fund children’s programming in our area. Thanks again for helping support such a worthy cause!

We purchased for the Church Office $200.00 in food coupons for Ryan’s Big M. The office budget also met our donation with $200.00. As most of you know, we often have walk-in people who need food at a time when the food shelf is not open. We gave a gift of $ 500.00 to one of our church families during a difficult period. We paid our annual $40.00 dues to BEOC and sent $150.00 to UMCOR (toward Haiti Relief).

We, on the Outreach Team are very pleased to be able to help our community in these ways. A big thank you to Kathy Klump for all her work in organizing the rummage sale and the many people of the congregation who assisted us that week-end. Thank you, too, to George and Kathy Klump and Rick Cordori for all their effort in getting together the Garland chicken barbeque. Again, we had lots of help in this endeavor. We would not be able to help these groups if not for the assistance of many people in our church family.

December MusicListen to the angel Choir sing “Ev’ry Little Angel” during the

sunday school Pageant on sunday, December 12th.

Join us for our Senior Choir & Friends annual Christmas Cantata on sunday, December 19th. “I Hear the Prophet Callin” is a refreshing new cantata by Pepper Choplin that uses folk music styles based on Appalachian, Irish, Latin, Cajun and Early American music.

Both of these presentations will take place during our Sunday morning worship at 9:30 am.

Because of various conflicts, it was deemed necessary to can-cel our November meeting. We will hold a combined November/December meeting on Monday, December 6th at 6 PM at THE PARSONAGE (54 Sweden Hill Road). As always, our meeting will consist of food, fellowship, some business, and a seasonal devo-tional. The Snyders will be providing our meal…please bring a couple bucks to help offset the cost. ALL MEN ARE WELCOME! Our focus remains upon our ongoing missions programs and ser-vice projects for BUMC. We ask that all attendees bring $10 to send as a donation to Miracle Garden, a tsunami orphanage in India. This is NOT MANDATORY, but is simply a request.
