Moon Phases

When the bright part is getting bigger, the Moon is waxing.

When it is getting smaller, the Moon is waning.

When the Moon is more than half-lit, it is called a gibbous Moon. (big)

When the moon is less than half-lit, it is called a crescent Moon.

MODELING THE Earth’s MOON PHASES- Mini LabProblem: To create an ACCURATE model of the Earth-Moon system and the phases of the moon,

Materials- Each student will receive only 8 chocolate cookies with white filling (Oreo ® ).

Safety- FOOD ALLERGIES, wash hands before and after!!, wait for permission, sharp toothpick

Procedure:1) Use the cookies to make the models of the following phases of the moon:a) New moon b) Waxing Crescent c)First Quarterd) Waxing Gibbous e) Full Moon f) Waning Gibbousg) Last/Third Quarter h) Waning Crescent

2) Separate your cookies carefully, so that ½ of the cookie has ALL of the frosting and the other ½ of the cookie has NO frosting. *Use the side of one cookie to “cut away” some of the white filling to create each of the moons.

3) Using the provided placemat, place your completed cookies in the correct order.

3) Put the cookie models IN ORDER in relation to the Earth and SUN, use the sun as your guide.

4) You need MY approval of your model before you have permission to “munch on the moon”.

5) Draw in and label each of the moon phases that you created on the back side of the sheet. CLEAN UP YOUR AREA!!
