What is a Chanticleer?

A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal

Carolina University one of the most unique nick-

the University of South Carolina system.

A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barn-

COASTAL CAROLINA TRACK & FIELD

2008-2009 Track & Field Media Guide

Jeff Jacobs begins his fifth year as the

head coach of Coastal Carolina University’s

men’s cross country and outdoor track and

field programs.

The 2008 cross country team placed

fourth at the Big South Championships.

Jacobs mentored Jamie McCarthy to a spot

on the Big South All-Conference team and

Big South All-Academic team.

The Chanticleers picked up their first

team title at the Gamecock Invitational,

with six runners in the top 12. In the 2008

track and field season, the Chanticleers

established five new school records. Jacobs

saw seven members of the squad qualify

for NCAA East Regional. At the Big South Conference Championships,

the Chanticleers came away with five individual titles, including Coastal

Carolina’s first ever Big South high jump crown. Under the direction

of Jacobs and his staff, 10 athletes earned All-Conference honors, two

were named to the All-East Region Team and one advanced to the

NCAA Championship. Last spring marked

the fifth consecutive season at least one

Coastal Carolina athlete has qualified

for the Outdoor Track & Field National

Championship.

During the 2007 cross country

season, Jacobs guided the Chanticleers to

their third consecutive Coastal Carolina

Invitational title, placing four runners in

the top five. Coastal Carolina finished sixth

in the team standings at the New Balance

Big South Conference Championships.

Blair Paul was named to both the All-

Conference and All-Academic teams.

Jacobs led the 2007 track and field

team to a record setting season. The squad

re-wrote most of the school record book,

setting 10 school records. Meanwhile,

Thomas Jordan set a new facility record

in the javelin at the Big South Championships. Coastal Carolina claimed

two individual champions at the Big South Championships en route to

a runner-up team finish. Coastal Carolina registered 15 All-Conference

athletes and five regional qualifiers, while Jerome Simpson qualified for

the NCAA Championships in the long jump.

Jacobs led the 2006 cross country team to a second-place finish at

the Big South Championships, coaching two athletes to All-Conference

honors, one to the All-Academic team and the Big South Freshman of

the Year in Jamie McCarthy. The Chanticleers spent the majority of the

season ranked 10th in the Southeast Region and sent seven runners

to the Regional meet where they finished 18th in the team standings.

The team claimed first place in both the Covered Bridge Open and the

Coastal Carolina Invitational.

The 2006 track season was a banner year for Jacobs’ program

at Coastal Carolina. The squad captured just the second Big South

Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship in school history,

scoring 205 points. In the course of the meet, 14 Coastal Carolina

athletes posted All-Conference performances, including five conference

champions and the Big South Freshman of the Year Tyrone Murphy.

Jacobs also earned Co-Coach of the Year honors and had five athletes

qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championships. From there, Jordan

advanced to the NCAA Championships in the javelin and became just

Coastal Carolina’s second track and field All-American.

In his first year at the helm, Jacobs guided the Chanticleer track and field

team to a runner-up finish in the Big South Championships as 11 athletes

had All-Conference finishes, including three conference champions.

Three athletes qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships, and two

advanced to the NCAA National Championships, including Mark Johnson

in the pole vault, who became first All-American in program history. Seven

school records were established during the 2005 season.

Jacobs came to Coastal Carolina from the University of California

at Santa Barbara, where he served as the assistant men’s and women’s

track and field and cross country from 1999 to 2004.

Jacobs began his coaching career during the 1991-1992 season as

an assistant at UCSB with the men’s cross country team. He took a few

years away from the sport before rejoining the Gauchos during the fall

of 1999 as an assistant.

During his time with the Gauchos, Jacobs coached the UCSB

distance runners to school records in the women’s 1,500 meters, 5,000

meters, 3,000-meter steeplechase, 10,000 meters and the distance

medley relay. Under Jacobs’ guidance, men’s records were also set in

the 800 meters and 10,000 meters. Two athletes achieved All-American

status during Jacobs tenure, with one in men’s cross county in 2001 and

another in women’s track and

field in 2003.

UCSB also achieved great

team success as the men’s cross

country squad qualified for the

NCAA Championships for the

first time in 2001, finishing 17th.

The women also made their

mark in 2003, making their

first-ever trip to the NCAA

Championships, finishing 29th.

In 2004, four Gaucho distance

runners qualified for the NCAA

Championships.

In addition to his assistant

coaching duties with UCSB, he

also worked for a local financial

planning organization for five

years.

Jacobs was an accomplished athlete with the Gauchos, capturing

the cross country team’s MVP award in three seasons as well as being

named All-Conference in 1988. His best 5,000 meter time in college

was 14:34.11.

Jacobs remains a competitive long-distance runner. He finished 25th

out of 15,000 runners at the 33rd annual “Wharf to Wharf” six-mile race

at Santa Cruz in July of 2005. He won the Coastal Carolina Homecoming

5k in November of 2004 in a course-record time of 15:40. He set the

course record of 1:30.29 in the 2000 “Pier to Peak” Half Marathon, a

4,000-foot elevation climb. Jacobs captured the individual crown in the

2000 Santa Barbara Half Marathon with a time of 1:12:12. In 1991, Jacobs

won “The People’s Race” in Carlsbad, Calif., posting a 5,000-meter road

personal best time of 14:23. His best 10,000 meter track time remains

at 30:22.63, which he set in March 1997. His best half marathon time is

1:09:24 and his best marathon time is 2:33:57.

Jacobs earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in communication

studies at UC-Santa Barbara in 1992 and also completed the Coaching

Certification Program at UCSB. Jacobs is a certified USATF Level II Coach

in both endurance and sprints and hurdles. Jacobs currently serves as

the Big South Conference Representative on the NCAA Executive Track

& Field Committee.

17 individual events en route to a team total of 202.5 team points. Connie

earned Big South Indoor Coach of the Year honors, leading his team to

its third-straight indoor team title.

Coastal Carolina faired even better in the outdoor campaign,

winning the outdoor team title by a 46 point margin over Charleston

Southern. The squad boasted six individual titles, and earned 230 team

points for their fourth title in the past five years.

The 2005-06 year was a special one for the Coastal Carolina

women’s cross country and track and field programs. Connie’s Chants

captured the “triple crown”, sweeping the Big South in all three seasons

(cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field). Coastal Carolina

set a record for the most points ever totaled at the Big South Indoor

Championships when they won the title with 233.5 points. Additionally,

the teams also set records for largest margin of victory in Big South

history in both indoor and outdoor competition.

In Connie’s tenure, he has witnessed multiple athletes reach the

pinnacles of their careers. Among them was Amber Campbell, a member

of the USA Olympic Team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she was

the top American finisher. At Coastal Carolina, Campbell was a five-time

All-America selection, and member of the USA National team at the

World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Campbell also graduated

as the all-time American collegiate record holder in the indoor weight

throw. Another standout was Jolene (Williams) Byrne, a two-time All-

American, who finished second at the NCAA Division I Indoor National

Championships for 3,000 meters, and earned the Bronze Medal at the

2005 World University Games in Turkey, in the 5,000 meters. She also

finished 14th at the 2005 World Cross Country Championships in France.

Four members of the Coastal Carolina Track and Field team have been

named to the USA, Great Britain, Ireland and New Zealand World

University teams during their tenures at Coastal Carolina.

In addition to the successes on the track and cross country courses,

Connie’s student-athletes have proven that the student definitely comes

first. The cross country team has earned twelve consecutive Academic

All-American Team with Distinction honors from the United States Track

and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The

track team has ranked as a top 15 All-Academic team since the award

was inaugurated seven years ago. In 2007, Coastal was sixth out of 327

Division I track and field programs with a 3.421 cumulative team GPA

and earned a 3.319 cumulative GPA in 2008 to rank 21st in the nation.

Additionally, four of Connie’s athletes have earned Academic All-

American honors, as selected by CoSIDA. Felicitas Mensing earned the Big

South Scholar-Athlete of the Year Triple Crown in the 2007-08 seasons,

and was only the third athlete in

Big South history to accomplish the

feat. Her efforts in the classroom

earned her Second-Team ESPN the

Magazine Academic All-America

honors. Additionally, seven of the

last 11 Big South Female Scholar

Athletes of the Year have been

members of Coastal Carolina’s track

and field squad.

Before coming to Coastal

Carolina, Connie led the North

Myrtle Beach High School boys’

cross country team to two state

titles. He also guided the girls’ track and field program to two state titles

and three state runner-up finishes. During his tenure at North Myrtle

Beach High, Connie compiled a 169-2-1 record in dual and tri-meets. He

was voted the South Carolina Track and Field/Cross Country Coach of the

Year four times. Connie has two daughters- Sara (28) and Kira (24).

Alan Connie enters his 23rd season

as the head coach of Coastal Carolina

University’s women’s cross country team,

his 14th as the head women’s outdoor

track and field coach, and his 12th as the

head coach of the women’s indoor track

and field team.

Connie has also been named the Big

South Conference Coach of the Year a

record 25 times — 12 in cross country,

seven in indoor track and field and six in

outdoor track and field. In 2003-04 and

2005-06, Connie received the triple crown

for Coach of the Year in Cross Country,

Indoor Track and Field and Outdoor Track and Field. Also in 2004, he

was named the Southeast Region Coach of the Year for Indoor Track

and Field.

Over the years, Connie has built the women’s cross country

program into the most successful program in the Big South Conference.

The proof is 12 Big South Conference Championships, 83 All-Conference

selections, 15 individual champions who have been named the Big South’s

Runner of the Year, 18 NCAA All-Southeast Region selections, nine NCAA

National Championships qualifiers and two NCAA All-Americans. The

15 Big South individual champions includes a stretch of eight consecutive

titles from 1992 to 1999, two consecutive winners in 2002 and 2003

and three straight winners from 2005 to 2007. He has also coached

10 Big South Rookies of the Year, including five straight from 2002 to

2006. To top it all off, Connie has coached the Big South’s only set of

women’s cross country All-Americans in Julia Viellehner (2006) and

Diana Jepchirchir (2007).

While Connie has established the cross country program as the

Big South’s best, he has also led the Lady Chanticleers into the national

spotlight. Following a No. 24 national ranking in 1996, Connie coached

Coastal to a ranking of 20th nationally in 1997. In 2002, the Lady Chants

were ranked 30th in the country during the season.

In track and field, Connie has coached athletes to eight All-American

honors, as well as 73 Big South Indoor Champions, 78 Big South Outdoor

Champions, and a combined 384 indoor and outdoor All-Conference

selections. Connie’s most recent All-American in track and field was 2007

graduate Chasity Johnson, who was All-American in 2005 in the indoor

triple jump. She holds the Big South Conference records in the indoor

and outdoor triple and long jump, and was the

2005 Big South Conference Track and Field

Female Athlete of the Year. Johnson also qualified

for the USA National Outdoor Championships

in Carson, Calif.

The 2008 season saw the Chants capture

both the indoor track and field team title, as

well as the outdoor team title. The two titles

marked eight Big South indoor and outdoor

championships in a five year span.

The 2007-08 academic year produced

two more Big South Championships in track

and field and a Big South Runner-Up finish in

cross country. The cross country season was

highlighted by Diana Jepchirchir earning All-

America honors to become Coastal Carolina’s second-straight cross

country All-American. Jepchirchir also set Big South and Coastal Carolina

records with a time of 20:22.50 at the NCAA Southeast Regionals held

in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Chants ran away with the Big South Indoor title by a 29.5 margin

over runner-up Liberty at championships, winning seven of the possible

COASTAL CAROLINA TRACK & FIELD

2008-2009 Track & Field Media Guide

Coastal Carolina’s men’s and women’s throwers have achieved great success under the guidance of Jacquie Grimes. As Grimes enters

her fifth season as an assistant coach, her athletes continue to achieve success at the regional and national levels. In addition to coaching the

throwers, Grimes is also the strength coordinator for the group.

In her tenure at Coastal Carolina, she helped guide the Lady Chanticleers to Big South Outdoor Track and Field titles in 2005, 2006 and

2008 as well as Big South Indoor titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Grimes has coached one All-East performer, 10 NCAA East Regional Qualifiers,

four Conference Champions and 26 All-Conference performers. Under Grimes’ guidance, Brittany Connor qualified for the 2008 U.S. Junior

Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the hammer throw.

Grimes also helped Coastal’s men’s team to the 2006 Big South Outdoor title. She has coached one All-American, three All-East Region performers, 12 NCAA Regional

Qualifiers, five Big South Individual Champions and 13 All-Conference performers. In 2006, Grimes coached Thomas Jordan to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA

Championship meet, as well as All-American status.

Grimes came to the Chanticleers from UNC Wilmington where she was the assistant track and field coach from 1997-2003. She helped the Seahawk men’s team to six

consecutive CAA titles from 1998-2002. In 2002, she was named the CAA Men’s Track and Field Coach of the Year. While at UNCW, Grimes coached two indoor NCAA

provisional qualifiers, four outdoor NCAA Regional qualifiers, 33 CAA Champions and 134 All-Conference selections. She also served as the strength coordinator for the

sprinters, jumpers, and throwers.

Before her time at UNCW, Grimes spent two years as a graduate assistant at Troy State, her alma mater. She coached five conference champions and seven All-Conference

athletes.

Grimes earned her bachelors of science degree in biology from Troy State in 1996. She was a member of the Trojan track and field team from 1993-95. Prior to heading

Troy State, Grimes attended Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill. and was a two-sport athlete, participating on the track and field team and basketball for two seasons.

Grimes currently resides in Myrtle Beach.

In the third season of his third stint at Coastal Carolina, Berry Shumpert serves as an assistant track and field coach and works with the

sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers, and multi-events.

Last season, Shumpert’s event group performances set new standards for Coastal Carolina Track and Field and the Big South Conference

overall. Shumpert coached a total of 12 Big South Champions and established six new school record and three Big South all-time best

performances. The Chanticleers swept the sprint events at the New Balance Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships, claiming

champions in the 60-meter dash (Ikeiylah Brown), 200 meters (Shanta Johnson), 400 meters (Vondeeshia Humphries) and the 60-meter

hurdles (LeAuna Sistrunk). Also at the conference’s indoor championships, Shumpert’s athletes accounted for 13 of Coastal Carolina’s 21

All-Conference selections. For his efforts during the indoor season, Shumpert was voted the Southeast Region Coach of the Year, marking the third time he has earned

such an award from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association. Also during the 2008 campaign, Shumpert coached Jacques Watson to All-Region

honors. Watson became the first Coastal Carolina athlete to qualify for the NCAA National Championship in the high jump with a leap of 2.16m (7’1”), establishing a new

school and Big South conference record. Shumpert’s event group also produced NCAA Regional qualifiers in the pole vault (Claire Young), 110m hurdles (Ben Wheeler),

long jump (Keith Graham), 100m hurdles ( LeAuna Sistrunk) and 400m (Vondeeshia Humphries).

In 2007, Shumpert’s athletes broke 17 program records and five Big South records. Shumpert coached Jerome Simpson, who set a new Coastal record in the long

jump, earned All-Region honors and became the first Chanticleer to qualify for the NCAA National Championships in the long jump. Under Shumpert’s guidance, Ikeiylah

Brown and Shanta Johnson both qualified for the United States Track and Field Junior Nationals. Shumpert also coached multiple athletes to NCAA Regional qualifying

status in the 200 meters, 400 meters, 400-meter hurdles, 4x400-meter relay and the triple jump.

Shumpert returned to Coastal after spending two years as an assistant track and field coach at the University of Miami, where he coached, Tabia Charles, the 2006

NCAA National Champion in the Triple Jump. He also trained and developed 12 All-Americans, six Atlantic Coast Conference champions and 18 national qualifiers. He

was named the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Assistant Coach of the Year for women’s jumps/combined events in each

of his two seasons with the Hurricanes.

Prior to Miami, he spent three years at the University of Tennessee as a volunteer assistant track and field coach while he earned his master’s degree in sport management.

Shumpert assisted one NCAA Champion, 13 All-Americans and nine All-Southeastern Conference performers. Shumpert also helped coach Tianna Madison, who was the

Amber Campbell is in her fourth year as a volunteer assistant coach for throwers at Coastal Carolina University after finishing

her career as one of the most distinguished athletes ever to compete at Coastal Carolina.

Most recently, Campbell participated for Team USA in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. She placed 21st in the prelims of the

hammer throw with a mark of 67.86 -meters. The effort was good enough for the top American finish in her first Olympics.

She was a five-time NCAA All-American in the hammer and weight throw and a 16-time Big South Champion during her four

collegiate years at Coastal Carolina. She owns the school records in the weight, indoor shot put, outdoor shot put, discus and

the hammer throws. She also was named the Big South Women’s Track Athlete of the Year each of her final three years. In 2002-03, she was honored

as the conference’s Female Athlete of the Year.

She will work with the Coastal Carolina throwers this season as she continues her training for the U.S. National Team and U.S. International

Competition. In 2007, Campbell won her first USA Indoor National Championship in the weight throw with a throw of 80’6.25” (24.54m). She was

the bronze medalist at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials and also was third at the 2005 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Home Depot

Center in Carson, Calif. With that finish, she qualified to compete for Team USA at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, where she

finished 18th. Additionally, she has captured consecutive USA Indoor National Championships in the hammer throw.

She will continue to train in preparation for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Campbell is a 2004 graduate with a degree in psychology. In addition to her volunteer status with the Chanticleer program, she works as a personal

trainer and a night manager at Sport Doctors. She resides in Myrtle Beach.

Zola (Budd) Pieterse is entering her first season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Coastal Carolina University track & field

program.

A native of South Africa, Pieterse is a two-time Olympian, having competed for Great Britain in the 1984 Los Angeles Games

and represented South Africa at 1992 Barcelona Games as she had dual citizenship due to her grandfather. During her international

track career, she twice broke the world record in a period of less than three years in the women’s 5000 meters, and twice was

the women’s winner at the World Cross Country Championships.

Best known for training and competing barefoot during her track and field career, Pieterse still holds two junior world records in the mile and the

3000 meters and during her career broke records in the 2,000 and 3,000 meters in outdoors and the indoor 3,000 meters.

In 2008 she won the Asheville Half-Marathon, in running shoes, in a time 1 hour, 25 minutes, 16 seconds, almost eight minutes ahead of the runner-up.

She is currently training and plans to compete in Master’s Road Race events in the United States.

As a volunteer assistant, Pieterse has competed at the Blue Ridge Mountain Open, winning the 5k race with a time of 17:53. Additionally, she participated

in the 2008 New York Marathon, placing 10th in her age group and was the 69th female overall with a time of 2:59.53.
