3 d EVERY FORTNIGHT No. 38 IMPERIAL C O L L E G E 13 JUNE I9S2 PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT SECRETARY I.C. REPRESEN- TATIVE Pbllip Allsopp Derek Power Edmund Harding Derek Crossley The matters of moment having been dispersed, official recognition is given to the advent of the silly season. T h e P r e s i d e n t makes a s p e e c h , up comes the hardy annual concerning the p l u m b i n g o n the top floor, w h i c h i s being looked into or sat on a c c o r d i n g t o the p o s i t i o n o f the President's drawing office, and every-one congraulates every- one else. Duty done, the F i e l d Cup Race can be run. The F i e l d C u p w a s o r i g i n a l l y presented to the winners of a n i n t e r d e p a r t m e n t a l b o a t r a c e on the Serpentine, but due to l a c K o f appreciation in some quarters, the course is from time to modified. The enigmatic smiles of the Guildsmen who knew were rewarded - not only by a b o a t r a c e but a chariot race a s w e l l . In less time, than it ta^es to undo another team's bolt, a l l departments were busy c o n s t r u c t i n g c h a r i o t s (see working drawing in Room 17) of scaffolding a n d U n i v e r s a l couplings - but a l l too soon, the appropriate start by Jack and the Spanner had not been given - the machines were d i s m a n t l e d ( w e l l , officially) . Down went the Spanner and almost at once the Civils, who had been furthest from the P r e s i d e n t i a l e y e , had hoisted their vehicle aloft a s t h e y staggered to Exhibition Road. By a few masterful strokes of a two by four angle the charioteer d i s p e n s e d w i t h the services of a l l who were not actively assisting him (some 200) . Closely h a u l e d b y the Electricals, the Civils tore u p t o the Pari, waived on by affable police- men ,and reached the bridge over the Serpentine with 2 0 y a r d s ' lead. Over the parapet went the flag and away shot the boat b e n e a t h , p r o p e l l e d by McKenna and McKenna, ably h i n d e r e d b y the Civils captain at the r u d d e r e n d a n d a c h a r a c t e r w i t h a broom at the other. Due i n n o small measure to the fishing activites of the Civils, the Electri- cals, who were rowing strongly, began to creep up, until a boat propelled by two Civils admirers who were not l o o k i n g w h e r e they were going, caused a break In the rowing a n d a heated exchange of pretty compliments. By now the Mechanicals had given their flag to the duly grateful Ghemicals and one brave, spirit delivered h i s f l a g personally, when he came up affcer j u m p i n g o f f the bridge. R u n n i n g b a t t l e s were fought a s t h e r i v a l c r e w s tried,hard to over- take the leaders. The Civils, some 5 l e n g t h s up, were met by a merman who tried h a r d i f u n s u c c e s s f u l l y t o make an i m p r e s s i o n u p o n t h e d i s c u s s i o n a s to the best means of making the shore w i t h d i g n i t y . The pennant was h u r l e d b u t fell short of the bank. Rising to the occasion, or did he f a l l ? Newman plunged into the water to come d r i p p i n g t o the bank. By now a l l the boats h a d a r r i v e d and chaos reigned as revenge was taken. ENGINEERING PAPER PRIZE The Links Club M e m o r i a l P r i z e for the best student paper written for the ' G u i l d s E n g i n e e r ' has t h i s y e a r been awarded to M. W. ^nill for his contribution "Methane Production from Sewage Slud<£", The prize was first awarded last year and has a value of three guineas. It was instituted in memory of the seventeen 'Links' killed in the war. GUILDS CIVIL SUCCESS Guilds elections this year were again prece- ded oy the s t u d i e d c a l m a n d i n d i f f e r e n c e so charagteristic of the engineering fraternity. Not for G u i l d s t h e glorious h u s t i n g s o f lesser places nor the i n t r o d u c t i o n o f the candidates to the electors before the great denouement. The few articulate members entertain the house with spark- ling wit a n d a p a s s i n g r e f e r e n c e to their protege, thus e n s u r i n g t h a t the best m a n w i n s .
