Hymn: TiS 273
1. Lo! he comes with clouds descending,
once for favoured sinners slain;
thousand thousand saints attending
swell the sound of this refrain:
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
hallelujah!
God appears on earth to reign.
2. Every eye shall now behold him
robed in awesome majesty;
those who have betrayed and sold him,
pierced and nailed him to the tree,
deeply shamed before him, deeply
shamed before him,
deeply shamed before him
shall the true Messiah see.
3. Those dear tokens of his passion
still his dazzling body bears,
cause of endless exultation
to his ransomed worshippers:
with what rapture, with what
rapture,
with what rapture
gaze we on those glorious scars!
4. Sing amen! let all adore you,
high on your eternal throne;
Saviour, take the power and glory,
claim the kingdom for your own;
O come quickly, O come quickly,
O come quickly;
hallelujah! Come, Lord, come.
Charles Wesley
1707–88 alt.

Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to
his king, and exalt the power of his anointed. 1 Samuel 2.10
Prayer of Preparation:
As we gather as God's people let us pray together:
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration
of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your
God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and
with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment.
And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’
4
The Confession
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution (Celebrant)
Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to
him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
5
Gloria – Ushaw Setting (Alan Rees)
CHOIR: Glory, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest,
ALL:
and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
6
Prayer of the Day
O God, welcoming refuge for the outcast, and upholder of justice for the
oppressed: maintain the hope of the poor, so that the time may soon come
when no one need want for food and shelter, and all will learn to share freely
following the example of your Son, who gave his very self; who now lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: First Reading: 1 SAMUEL 1.4-20 4On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife
Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; 5but to Hannah he gave a double
portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. 6Her
rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had
closed her womb. 7So it went on year after year; as often as she went up to
the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and
would not eat. 8Her husband Elkanah said to her, ‘Hannah, why do you weep?
Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten
sons?’ 9After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented
herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the
doorpost of the temple of the Lord. 10
She was deeply distressed and prayed
to the Lord, and wept bitterly. 11
She made this vow: ‘O Lord of hosts, if only
you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not
forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set
him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither
wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.’ 12
As she continued
praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13
Hannah was praying
silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli
thought she was drunk.14
So Eli said to her, ‘How long will you make a drunken
spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.’ 15
But Hannah answered, ‘No, my
lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong
drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. 16
Do not regard
your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great
anxiety and vexation all this time.’ 17
Then Eli answered, ‘Go in peace; the God
of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.’ 18
And she said ‘Let your
servant find favour in your sight.’ Then the woman went to her quarters, ate
and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. 19
They
7
rose early in the morning and worshipped before the Lord; then they went
back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the
Lord remembered her. 20
In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She
named him Samuel, for she said, ‘I have asked him of the Lord.’
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
Psalm: The Song of Hannah
My heart exults in the Lord:
my strength is exalted in my God.
My mouth derides my enemies:
because I rejoice in your salvation.
There is no Holy One like you, O Lord:
nor any Rock like you, our God.
For you are a God of knowledge:
and by you our actions are weighed.
The bows of the mighty are broken:
but the feeble gird on strength.
Those who were full now search for bread:
but those who were hungry are well fed.
The barren woman has borne sevenfold:
but she who has many children is forlorn.
Both the poor and the rich are of your making:
you bring low and you also exalt.
You raise up the poor from the dust:
and lift the needy from the ash heap.
You make them sit with the rulers:
and inherit a place of honour.
For the pillars of the earth are yours:
and on them you have set the world.
Second Reading: HEBREWS 10.11-14, 19-25 11
And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again
the same sacrifices that can never take away sins.12
But when Christ had
offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, ‘he sat down at the right hand of
8
God’, 13
and since then has been waiting ‘until his enemies would be made a
footstool for his feet.’ 14
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time
those who are sanctified. 19
Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence
to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20
by the new and living way that
he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21
and since
we have a great priest over the house of God, 22
let us approach with a true
heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil
conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23
Let us hold fast to the
confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is
faithful. 24
And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good
deeds, 25
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but
encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
Gradual Hymn: TiS 154
1. Great is your faithfulness, O God my Father,
in you no shadow of turning we see;
you never fail and your love is unchanging:
as you have been you for ever will be.
Great is your faithfulness,
great is your faithfulness,
morning by morning new mercies we see;
all we have needed your hand has provided:
great is your faithfulness, Lord God, to me.
2. Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
join with all nature in unspoken witness
to your great faithfulness, mercy and love.
3. Pardon for sin and a peace that’s enduring,
your living presence to cheer and to guide,
strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow —
these are the blessings your love will provide.
Thomas Obadiah Chisholm 1866–1960 alt.
based on Lamentations 3:22, 23

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet
our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 13
beginning at the 1st
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
1As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Look,
Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!’2Then Jesus asked him,
‘Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon
another; all will be thrown down.’3When he was sitting on the Mount of
Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him
privately, 4‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these
things are about to be accomplished?’ 5Then Jesus began to say to them,
‘Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say,
“I am he!” and they will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars and
rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still
to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom;
there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but
the beginning of the birth pangs. 9‘As for yourselves, beware; for they will
hand you over to councils; and you will be beaten in synagogues; and you will
stand before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to
them. 10
And the good news must first be proclaimed to all nations. 11
When
they bring you to trial and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about
what you are to say; but say whatever is given you at that time, for it is not
you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church)
The Nicene Creed
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
11

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)
{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ.
His Spirit is with us.
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
[A greeting of peace is exchanged with those around us]
Offertory Hymn:
TiS 560
1. All my hope on God is founded;
all my trust he will renew,
through all change and chance he
guides me,
only good and only true.
God unknown,
he alone
calls my heart to be his own.
2. Human pride and earthly glory,
sword and crown betray our trust;
all we build with care and labour,
tower and temple, fall to dust.
But God’s power,
hour by hour,
is my temple and my tower.
3. God’s great goodness lasts for ever,
deep his wisdom, passing thought;
splendour, light and life attend him,
beauty springing out of naught.
Evermore
from his store
new-born worlds rise and adore.
4. Daily the almighty giver
will his bounteous gifts bestow;
in his will our souls find pleasure,
leading us where’er we go.
Love will stand
at his hand,
joy shall wait for his command.
5. Still from earth to God eternal
sacrifice of praise be done,
high above all praises praising
for the gift of Christ his Son.
Hear Christ call
one and all:
those who follow shall not fall.
Robert Bridges 1844–1930 alt.
after Joachim Neander 1650–80
13
Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.
Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our
offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom.
BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.
The Prayer of Thanksgiving (Kew)
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Priest: Lift up your hearts:
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise...
Priest: ... Forever praising you and singing:
ALL:
CHOIR: God of power and God of might.
ALL:
CHOIR: Heaven and earth are full, are full of your glory.
ALL:
CHOIR: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
ALL:
14
Priest: …. do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me
Priest: in songs of never ending praise:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
15
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION
{Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
We who are many are one body,
For we all share in the one bread.
The Choir sings the Agnus Dei
Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in
remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with
thanksgiving.
Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church
are invited to share communion with us.
Communion wine may be received:
(a) from the common cup from the first of the two Eucharistic Assistants.
(b) by intinction from the second of the Eucharistic Assistants where a small
part of the wafer is carefully dipped in the wine, or
(c) from an individual glass on request from the first Eucharistic Assistant.
Or you may choose to receive the wafer only (Communion in one kind).
The Choir sings: “Cantate Domino”, Pitoni
THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE
Post-Communion Prayer
Prayer of self-offering
Father, we offer ourselves to you
as a living sacrifice
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your praise and glory. AMEN
16
Final Hymn: TiS
1. There’s a wideness in God’s mercy
like the wideness of the sea,
and forgiveness in his justice
sealed for us on Calvary.
2. There is plentiful redemption
in the blood that has been shed;
there is joy for all the members
in the sorrows of the Head.
3. For the love of God is broader
than the measures of our mind;
and the heart of the Eternal
is most wonderfully kind.
4. But we make his love too narrow
by false limits of our own,
and we magnify his strictness
with a zeal he will not own.
5. If our love were but more simple
we should take him at his word;
and our lives would be illumined
by the goodness of our Lord.
Frederick William Faber
1814–63 alt.
