1 Introduction

The EG30xx devices host an Ethernet port that can be used to wire the eGauge directly via Ether-net. If Ethernet-direct is not an option when monitoring a 3-phase 277/480V system, or an oldereGauge2 model unit is being used, this guide describes how to use a small step down transformerto supply power and communication to the HomePlug adapter.

The Actiontec HomePlug adapters supplied by eGauge Systems LLC are rated for voltages up to240Vac (50 or 60Hz). Sites operating at higher voltages require a small transformer to step downthe voltage to a range suitable for the HomePlug adapter. The transformer must be small enoughso as not to filter out the HomePlug signal, but large enough to power the HomePlug adapter, alongwith any auxiliary devices that may be required at the installation-site, such as a small Ethernetswitch or cell modem.

HT1001 277V HomePlug Transformer Kit Manual 1 INTRODUCTION

For 3-phase/277V (480V-phase-to-phase) installations, eGauge Systems LLC stocks a transformerkit, which transform 277Vac down to 120Vac, suitable for powering the HomePlug adapter. Thetransformer is rated for 50VA of power, suitable for powering another one or two auxiliary devices, provided total power consumed does not exceed 50VA. Included with transformer kit is a fusedesigned to protect the transformer from overloads.

2 Installation

Installation must be performed by a licensed electrician according to all applicable local, national, and international codes.

2.1 Materials included in the HT1001 Kit

• One Functional Devices TR50VA008 transformer.

• One 5x20mm fuse holder.

• Two 5x20mm 250mA, slow-blow fuses (one spare).

2.2 Additional materials required for installation

• 120V outlet with box.

• Stranded wire (AWG14 for use with a 15A breaker, AWG12 for use with a 20A breaker);length depending on installation location.

• Conduit, wire nuts, and couplings as needed.

2.3 Installation Location

The transformer and associated equipment should be installed indoors, near the eGauge main unit. The HomePlug adapter will need to be connected to an Ethernet cable, so usually the nearest placeto the eGauge with an Ethernet cable available, or to which an Ethernet cable can easily be run, isa good choice.

2.4 Kit Overview

The Functional Devices TR50VA008 transformer shown in Figure 1 is fitted with 10” leads exitingthrough a 1/2” chase nipple.

The fuse holder and a fuse are shown in Figure 2. The fuse holder is rated for 250Vac/20A and isfor a single 250mA 5x20mm slow-blow fuse. For installation, cut the red wire in half and wire itonto the secondary side of the transformer.

2.5 Typical Wiring Diagram

Figure 3 is a schematic wiring diagram showing a typical installation scenario with an eGauge mainunit wired to a 3-phase 277V/480V power system. The neutral (N) and the phase wired to L1 ofthe eGauge are also wired to the primary side of the Functional Devices TR50VA008 transformer, since L1/N is where the eGauge main unit outputs the HomePlug signal. The secondary side ofthe transformer is then wired to the outlet box. The hot leg of the secondary side wired through thefuse-holder to ensure that the transformer is protected against accidental overloads.

NOTE: Since the outlet powered by the TR50VA008 transformer is rated for a max-imum of 50VA, we highly recommend labeling the outlet “For eGauge Use Only.50VA max.” Also, whenever possible, we recommend mounting the outlet inside anenclosure to reduce the likelihood of someone accidentally plugging another device inthe outlet that could blow the fuse.

2.6 Verifying Proper Operation

With the Action HomePlug coupler plugged into the newly installed outlet and connected to theLAN with an Ethernet cable, the eGauge device(s) should be reachable from the LAN as describedin the eGauge Owner’s Manual. If that is not possible, check the status LED on the ActiontecHomePlug adapter. The LK LED should be a steady red/orange, except for possible occasionalflickers, which indicate network traffic on the power-line medium. (If using an older eGauge2 withHomePlug 1.0, look for a steady green Power LED). If the LED turns off for prolonged periods oftime (several seconds or longer), it indicates that the HomePlug signal is too weak. In this case, verify that the primary side of the TR50VA008 transformer is wired to the same phase/neutral asthe L1 and N pins on the eGauge, respectively.
