Mission StatementThis excursion will broaden student’s horizons

and expose students to the needs of our global community through humanitarian aid. Building and strengthening virtuous relationships will remain central as students recognize their ability to serve the underprivileged. Through service, students will impact the lives of those around them and challenge their own opinions and way of thinking.

When? June 9th – July 9th 2010* Students will have

completed the academic school year

The trip will take place during the first summer term

Students will receive 4 high school credits 2 Social Studies: Cultural

Studies - Africa 1 English: Journalism 1 Fine Arts: Drumming

1st two weeks: Building Project During the first two

weeks students will work on building projects in Akuapem Hills

Located about 1.5 hours to the east of Accra

Building projects include: constructing housing & refurbishing schools and/or orphanages

2nd two weeks: Orphanage Project During the 2nd two

weeks students will assist staff at an Orphanage in Cape Coast

Located about 2.5 hours to the west of Accra

Students will organize various activities: arts & crafts, sports, dancing, and English lessons

Lodging Lodging is provided by

Projects Abroad Students will live with

host families in order to experience Africa on a deeper level

Host families are assessed by Projects Abroad and are commonly teachers or other civil servants

2 - 3 students and 1 GBA staff member per host family

Who is Eligible?

Past and current students who are aspiring towards Humility & Honor and/or Trust

Students must be at least 15.5 years old when the trip commences

Limit of 10 students 3 GBA staff will be joining

students on the trip

Drumming Workshop Students will drum with local

instructors 4 - 5 nights a week for the duration of the trip

At the end of the trip students will bring home the drum they used in the workshop

Pana-fest

+ Students will teach the rhythms they know andlearn new ones

Vaccinations A Yellow Fever vaccination is

required for entry into Ghana Must show proof with upon entry

Vaccinations recommended by CDC: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Meningitis,

Rabies, and Polio Hepatitis dosing can take 6 months

Routine inoculations should be up-to-date

Students must take an anti-malaria regiment a little before, during, and a little after the trip

Travel Insurance

Projects Abroad supplies each student with travel insurance

Policy covers: Medical expenses up to 2

million pounds ($3,159,413)

Repatriation if needed Transportation to nearest

acceptable treatment facility Travel of one relative needed

for medical advice, if required Cancellation, baggage, and

important documents

Signing up & First steps In order to reserve your student’s seat GBA must receive the

$500 nonrefundable deposit Payable to Greenbrier Academy & memo must state “Ghana deposit”

Passport Information Any current or past disabilities or infirmities (Psychological or

Physical) - For travel insurance purposes Seats are first come first serve *Dates and final price are dependent on flight schedule and

are subject to change Flights will be reserved when deposits are received Parents will be promptly updated to any changes
