Ø RemodelingSpace:Creatingflexible,efficient,andinnovativefacilitiesforhealthscienceseducationandresearchprograms:7,200squarefeetoflibrarystaffspacewasremodeledintoalargeconferenceroomcalledthePacificRoomandcompletedinJune2015.
Ø HigherUtilizationofSpace:Forthesecondconsecutiveyear,HSLuseincreasedby7%overFY13-14duetopartnershipusesand24/7accessforhealthsciencesstudents.

Partnershipswiththecampus,communityandhospitalsserveasthefoundationofanewhubforintegratedlearningforclinicalcaredelivery,interprofessionaleducation,andinterdisciplinaryteams,withouttheconstraintsofphysicalprintcollectionsandinformationaccess.Usinganincrementalinvestmentstrategytotestnewtrendsandleverageresourcesfromschools,Centers,andclinicalenvironmentslocallyandintheregionisahighpriority.Reorganizingstudentlearningformodernhealthscienceprogramsisbothanopportunityandachallenge,asprojects’scopesandfacilityconditionsarenotconducivetosuccessfuloutcomes.
HSLStaffAreaRemodelProject
TheHealthSciencesLibraryrenovated7,200squarefeetoflibrarystaffspacetosolveproblemsofaginginfrastructure,stafffunctionsthatnolongerexist,andoutdatedspaceconfigurations–anddoingtheupgradeslive.PfeifferPartnersworkedwithTaniaBardyn,in2012,tosetoutthevisionforthenewDirector’sreinvestmentinitscorestaffspace,andthemodernresearch,clinicalandteachingworkplacewearepursuingincludinglayouts,officeandsupportspaceratios,andworkplaceresourcesforwork/life.HSLfast-trackedPhase1ofamulti-phaseproject,duetotheupcomingretirementofNanetteWelton,whichreducedcost,maximizeduptime,andsupportstoday’sprogramprioritiesinthehealthscienceslibrary.GiliMeerovichofPfeifferPartnerssetoutastakeholderengagementprocess,preliminarybudgeting,andswingspacestrategies.Inthecourseofthisproject,theUniversityintroducedsustainabilitygoals.Keystaffengagementstepsforsuccessaffirmedneedsvs.wantsandtheimpactanewenvironmentwouldhaveonnewhiresandfuturestaff.Fundamentally,thegoalwastopositiontheHealthSciencesLibrarystaffspaceforafuture-readyteaching,clinicalandresearchenvironment,tofosterinnovation,andimproveproductivitythroughcollaborativeworkspace.
PHASE1:
a) PacificRoom:
TheresultincludesthePacificRoom-a1,100squarefoot,technology-rich,multi-functionconferenceroomforlibrarymeetings,projectplanning,activelearningworkshops,andspecialevents.Theroomincludesneutralair,soundproofing,andvideoconferencingtoseatapproximately78people.ThePacificRoomisimmediatelyadjacenttothestudents’24/7accessentrydooronthelowerlevel.ThiscollocationwillallowHSLtodevelopfuturegoalsforexpandeduseandbetterintegratestudentstudyandlearningspacesforagroupwhoselearningneedsareconstantlyevolving.Thespacehasbeensetuptoaccommodatehalf-dayandfull-dayworkshops.

Dismantlingoffice-basedcubiclesanddevelopingflexible,open,andcleanspaces
inPhase1facilitatedtheadministrativesuitereconfiguration.Overthelast10years,thenumberofadministrativestaffhasbeencutinhalfattheHealthSciencesLibrary.Positionswerenotgoingtoberefilled;therefore,cubiclesweredismantled,aphotocopierroomwas

repurposedfortwoprivateofficesforfuturelibrarianpositions,andstaffmovedintoasharedofficespacewithprivateentrances.
T-228wasdividedinto3semi-privatecubicles.WaitingareafurnitureandartwereaddedtotheAdministrativeareatocreateawelcomingspaceandabilitytohostsmallofficeeventslikecoffeebreaks,farewellcelebrations,andfurtheradvancementefforts.
c) ILL&Print/ElectronicResources
InJuly2014Print&ElectronicResourcesstaffmovedinto900squarefeetofremodeledspacethatincludednewcarpetandabrightgreenwallinplaceofanolderwallthatpreviouslyhadanon-functionalwindowandslidingdoor.
ILLstaffmovedinto1500squarefeetofremodeledspace.Themoveconsolidatedstaffwhohadpreviouslyworkedin4differentareasofthelibrary,improvingefficiencyforthedepartment.
Thenewspaceincludednewcarpetandcubicledividers.
Phase2,fundingpermitting,willfocusoncreatingnew,moreefficient,workspacesforNNLM/PNRstaff.Phase3willcreateasmallstaffroomwithakitchenetteandachangingareaforstaffwhoexerciseduringtheworkday.

Inadditiontorecruiting,theunitalsoventuredintothecreationofvideostosupportvariouslearningprojects.Videoswerecreatedandtestedforavarietyofactivitiesincludingmarketing,presentationcontent,andorientations.Expandingintothisarena,givesthedepartmentanopportunitytobegindevelopingsupplementarycontenttothemoretraditionalLibGuides.Additionally,severalmembersoftheteamwereawardedfundingfromtheNN/LMPNRtoexpandwritingcenterservicesattheHealthSciencesLibrary.Thefundingwillallowformoretutorhoursandspecializedtrainingtohelppreparetutorstoaddressspecificsrelatedtoscientificwriting.Theserviceshavebeenheavilyutilizedduringthefallandspringquarters.Thedepartmentisveryexcitedtobeabletoprovidetheseservicesforthecomingyeartoourusers.
2.MajoractivitiesandinitiativesanticipatedfornextyearandhowtheycontributetotheLibraries’StrategicDirectionsandfocusareas.
Thebiggestactivitiesforthedepartmentwillbehappeningonthecurriculumfront,whichtiesdirectlyintotheStrategicDirectionofTeachingandLearning.TheSchoolofMedicineissettobegintheirnewcurriculuminAugust.Withthesignificantchangeshappening,reflectedinthenewthemes,threads,blocks,anddesign,therewilllikelybenewexpectationsforhowandwherewesupportourstudents(Canvas).Thischangeisechoedinseveraloftheotherschools,eithercurrentlyundergoingorpotentiallyundertakingcurriculumchanges,suchasNursing,SocialWork,andDentistry.

TheUserExperienceDepartment’sactivitieshavebeenfarreachingandvariedforthelastyear.Thegrouphasparticipatedinorledanumberofinternalinitiatives.BelowisarecountofthemostimpactfulactivitiesandaccomplishmentsthroughJune2015.

• Conductedapilotprojectforstudentstotryout3DprintingintheHealthSciencesLibrary.

• SubmittedasuccessfulSTFproposal.HSLreceived$66,208.55toreplaceworkstationsintheCommonsdrop-inareaandtheLibraryTeachingLab.
• Implementedanewprocessforwithdrawingrecordsformissingitems.
• Replacedthewaterfountainwithabottle-fillingfountain.ThisimprovementwasrequestedbynumerousstudentsintheUWLibrariestriennialsurveyandcompletesoneoftheobjectivesintheEngagement&CommunitysectionofHSL’sstrategicplan.

TheHealthSciencesLibraryhastakenseveralstepstoexpandandimproveaccesstoonlineresources.InadditiontopurchasingtheaboveeBooks,thePrintandElectronicResourcesteamworkedwiththeHealthSciencesLibrary(HSL)WebTeamtodiscontinueCybertoolsastheA-ZjournallistandtopointuserstoPrimoA-Zjournallist.InanticipationofanHSLspecificA-ZeJournallist,thePrintandElectronicResourcesdepartmentdownloadedover2700eJournalRecords(MARC,XML)fromCybertoolsforfuturemigrationtoa“userfriendly”platformforuniversityclinicians,students,staff,researchersandfaculty.
PrintandElectronicResourceshasmadeanefforttoaligncollectionsandaccessstrategieswithcurrentandemergingUniversityneeds.AswiththeSuzzalloLibrary,theHealthSciencesLibraryhasbeenslowlyrunningoutofroominthebuilding.Inanefforttocreatemorespace,aplanforweedinghasbeenimplemented.However,priortoweeding,aSerialLabelingProjectneededtobeinitiated.Here,thePrintandElectronicResourcesteamcoordinatedtheworkflowandapplicationofover40,000classificationlabelstofacilitatefuturerelocationtooff-sitestorage.
OnJune15,2015,thePrintandElectronicResourcesdepartmentlostastaffmember.WithouttheLibraryTechnicianIII,theLibraryTechnician,Supervisorhashadtohandletheworkloadoftwopeople.Thisworkloadsupportstheinfrastructureofthelibrarybymaintainingnotonlytheelectronicresources,butalsothenewprintresourcesthatcometoHSL.WithoutthisinfrastructurethelibrarianscannotprovidetheservicestothevariedcustomersofHSLfromclinicianstostudentsoftheUniversityofWashingtonandUWMedicine.
Majoractivitiesandinitiativesanticipatednextyear,andhowtheycontributetotheLibraries'StrategicDirectionsandfocusareas.
Provideaccesstoworld-classcollectionsattheUW:
ToensurethattheeBookspurchasedwouldberelevanttoallusers,theteamislookingtoexpandtheHealthSciencesLibrary’sPDAservicefromRittenhousetobeopentothelargerUWpopulationinsteadofjustHSL.Assuch,UniversityofWashingtonatBothellandTacomaarebecominginvolvedinthisservice,especiallyastheyareexpandingtheirhealthsciencescurriculum.

AstheUWLibrariesworkontheExLibrisPrimodiscoverytooltoimprovediscoverabilityandaccesstoresourcesoftheUWLibraries,thePrintandElectronicResourcesteammembersareworkingwiththeHSLWebTeamontheA-ZeJournallistthatisfocusedonHealthSciencesLibrary-specificeJournalsinadditiontoworkingwiththePrimoOperationsGrouptoensureusabilityofPrimodiscoverytool.
ThePrintandElectronicteamwillalsocontinuetofocusoneBooksinsteadofprintbookstoensuredistancestudentscanaccessnecessarybooks,bypurchasingeBookswithmultipletounlimitedusersdependingonpriceandbudget.
AligncollectionsandaccessstrategieswithcurrentandemergingUniversityneeds:
WiththestartoftheHealthSciencesLibraryCollectionsManagerandClinicalLiaisonrolethatisembeddedinthePublicandResearchServicesdepartment,theneedforaseparatecollectionscommitteeisnolongernecessary.ThisrolewillhaveregularcontactwiththeotherliaisonlibrariansandthedepartmentsofSuzzalloLibrarythatwouldensurethatthereisregularcommunicationandcentralizedcoordinationofresourceinvestigation,negotiationandpurchasing.Theplanwillhavethisrolenotonlyhandlingcollectiondevelopmentandmanagement,butalsowithcollectionassessmenttohelpwithmanagingelectronicandprintresourcesbasedonqualitativeandquantitativeevaluation.
