A Tool for ExcellenceHRSD created the nation’s first wastewater industryapprenticeship program to preserve excellence inour workforce. Our eight apprenticeship programsare custom-designed to help individuals achievethe training and experience needed for a successfulcareer at HRSD.
A Key to Higher WagesApprentices can receive a training increase and amerit increase each year. Upon completion of theapprenticeship program HRSD employees areeligible to receive additional merit increases untilreaching the end of the pay scale.
EligibilityCandidates for HRSD’s apprenticeship programsmust be:• Hired by HRSD into an apprenticeship position• At least 18 years old• A high school or vocational school graduate
or have a GED• Physically able to perform the work
Eight Career ChoicesHRSD’s eight apprenticeship programs are acombination of on-the-job training and relatedclassroom instruction. All can be completed infour years. The following description of duties canhelp you select the position that’s right for you. Thenumber of job openings in each career determinesthe number of apprenticeship opportunitiesavailable.
Plant OperatorOperates and controls various wastewater
treatment plant processes and equipment. Performsfield and laboratory tests. Collects, analyzes andrecords data on wastewater treatment samples.Operator apprentices obtain the skills and credits
needed to earn their wastewater licenses andthe accompanying bonuses.
Maintenance OperatorPerforms maintenance and repairactivities for wastewater treatmentfacilities.
Interceptor TechnicianMaintains and repairs interceptorsystem force mains, gravity mains,
pump stations and equipment such as pumpsand compressors. Assures proper servicing andreadiness of equipment. Maintains stocks ofexpendable tools, fittings, pipes and other materials.
Instrumentation Specialist Uses highly specialized tools, computersand testing equipment to install, maintain,repair and replace electronic equipmentin wastewater treatment plants and pump stations.The equipment includes meters, programmablelogic controllers, variable frequency drives anddistributed control systems. Troubleshoots mal-functioning mechanisms, performs maintenanceand periodic inspections of all instruments in orderto calibrate and adjust in accordance with industrystandards.
ElectricianUses specialized tools, computers andtesting equipment to install, maintain,
repair and replace electrical equipment, motorsand generators in wastewater treatment plantand pump station electrical systems.
CarpenterBuilds, repairs, alters and maintains wood structures, buildings and furnishings. Prepares and paints wood, metals, plaster and sheetrocksurfaces.
Automotive TechnicianPerforms repairs and maintenanceon automotive and engine-poweredequipment used by HRSD. Trouble shoots andrepairs gasoline, natural gas, propane and dieselengines.
MachinistFabricates, rebuilds and repairs
replacement parts for large mechanical equipment.
