Football Reports U11 Teams vs St Faiths A Team reporter, William L On Wednesday, we faced St Faith’s. We started off strong but St Faith’s scored. We started again but suddenly a cross came in and they scored a volley. The score at half time was 2-0. The next half began, and I took the ball and passed it to Rafael, then he scored. Five minutes left and a cross came in and Josh scored a header over the keeper and in. The full time score was 2-2. Man of the match was Josh. Thank you Mr Smith for the coaching and Mr Curtis for the burger. B Team reporter, Charlie Y On Wednesday, the Spring Grove B Team hosted St Faith’s B Team. The weather was terrible but we played well. At the start of the game we didn’t pass that much but with great encouragement from Mr Curnow, we started to pass more and as a result, Svarmin scored 2 goals and a few minutes later—I scored! We defended really well and the final score was 3-0 to SG. The man of the match was Edward C-S. Thank you Mr Curtis for a great match tea and Mr Smith for training us. Well done SG. C Team reporter, George B St Faith’s kicked off and sneaked the ball into the goal and I found myself kicking off again. It was one way traffic as the ball kept heading towards our goal again and again and again. We defended well but just couldn’t get it out of our half. All of our attack were beaten back. Sadly we were not able to score any goals and St Faith’s managed to score… including a bizarre own goal at a corner. Edward C-S was man of the match for his energetic defending and passing. Thanks to Mr Curnow for refereeing and coaching and Mr Curtis for the love-ly burgers at match tea.

Hockey Reports U11 A&B Teams vs St Edmund’s A Team Match Reporter , Abigail W On Wednesday, the SG U11 As went to Ball Lane to play a hopefully interesting match against St Edmund’s. They started with the ball but it didn’t take long for us to take the ball off them. We were attacking well and had strong defence. Our first goal was quickly scored by Celina which gave us high hopes. We managed to get back up there and Alice scored a handy goal. Then it was half time. Mrs Brogan-Jones gave us an inspiring team talk. When we got back on the pitch, we played a ping-pong game going up and down the pitch. When we had a attempt to score, the ball got stuck in the goalie’s pads and with Anna whacking her pads many times, we managed to score our third goal! Darcey and Poppy both did some brilliant goalkeeping. Player of the match was Celina for her brilliant play. The final score was 3-0 to SG. Thank you to Mrs Brogan-Jones and Miss Drury for coaching us. Well done SG. B Team Match Reporter, Millie D On Wednesday the U10 girls played hockey against St Edmund’s. We started strong and Evie and Lola both scored straight away. We were off to a great start. In half time, Mrs Langford gave us an encouraging team talk. Evie and Lola both scored again and Olivia scored as well. The final score was 7-0 to SG. Well done SG. Thank you to Mrs Langford for organising, to Mrs Brogan-Jones for the support and finally a big thank you to Mr Lutz for the yummy chicken nuggets. Lola was voted lady of the match.

House matches for both girls and

boys are being played this coming

Wednesday. Please come and sup-

port your House.

SG PTA CHRISTMAS MARKET

Thank you to SG PTA for organising the Christmas Market today, and to everyone who supported it—

stallholders and customers.

IN MEMORY Charles Jenyns is a very interesting former resident of Spring Grove. He was a London businessman who was

attracted to moving to Wye in Kent in 1844 because of the new, fast train service into London. It is quite likely that he is one of the first daily London commuters. In those early years of train travel through Wye, the trains

used to stop and wait for people crossing the line rather than the other way round! Charles was also a talented amateur painter and his lovely image of Wye Church with a train chugging through in the background offers a wonderful glimpse of what the village looked like 160 years ago. The brass plaque has now been embedded in the floor beside the side door to the school (which can be reached via the back stairs). His sisters-in-law, Emily

and Ellen Young inherited the lease to the house upon his death in 1887.

BARONESS TRUMPINGTON

The death at the age of 96 of Jean Barker, Baroness Trumping-

ton was announced this week. Lady Trumpington was a highly

regarded and witty politician who worked as a codebreaker at

Bletchley Park during the Second World War. She also lived at Spring Grove for a time

during her early years, and on the occasion of the school’s 40th anniversary, Mr Jones invited her to return to her former home. A terse response came

back “No!” followed by the lovely letter below:
