Moly-Cop Tools, Version 3.0 About the HPGRSim_Open Spreadsheet ... Scope: The HPGRSim_Open spreadsheet was designed to simulate the Size-by-Size Mass Balance response of a High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR), operating in Open Circuit. Theoretical Framework: The attached HPGR model has been adapted from Magín Torres' MS Thesis at the University of Chile, published in April, 2010 plus additional documentation made available by the main equipment suppliers. The model consists of 3 specific equations which all combined allow for the calculation of the Specific Energy Consumption (kWh/ton), the key input for the solution of the linear grinding model equations; as they can be applied to a HPGR type of equipment: 1. Operational Gap Equation: The Operational Gap or separation between the two rolls is determined on the basis of the degree of compression that the ore particles are subjected to in their pass through the rolls: g = 1000 D cos a c (1 - cos a c ) / (r c /r a - cos a c ) where: g = Operational Gap, mm D = Roll Diameter, m r a = Apparent Density of the bulk particles being fed to the rolls, ton/m 3 r c = Apparent Density of the compressed particles (Cake), ton/m 3 a c = Critical Compression (Nipping) Angle defining the point at which particle compression starts, (°) Typical values of a c are in the range of 7° - 9°. 2. Capacity Equation: The grinding capacity developed by the HPGR is given by: M = 3.6 r c g L U c where: M = Grinding Capacity, ton/hr (metric) L = Roll Length, m U = Peripheral Roll Velocity, m/sec c = Extrusion/Slippage factor (between 1.0 and 1.15) Krupp Polysius, HPGR manufacturer, recommends U = 1.35 D 0.5 when D < 1.82 m or U = D when D > 1.82 m, in order to avoid excessive ore slippage through the rolls. 3. where: F = Compressive Force, kNewtons p = Compressive Pressure, Bars The Net Power Draw may be estimated from a typical '(torque) x (angular velocity)' equation where the torque against rotation of the rolls is being exerted by the friction component of the compressive force:

w = Rotational Roll Speed, radians/sec N = Rotational Roll Speed, rpm

m = Friction Coefficient; which may be approximated as sin(ac) The factor 2 in the above equation takes into account that both rolls must be provided similar amounts of power. Finally, the Specific Energy Consumption (kWh/ton) may be calculated as: E = P/M As it is widely recognized, a small fraction of the feed ore by-passes the grinding device near the edges of the rolls. In order to account for this effect, it is assumed that the energy actually applied to each ensemble of particles will vary along the length of the rolls, as illustrated: Under such assumption, the following energy balance must apply: E M = Ec Mc + Ee Me

is the specific energy applied to the center particles, while E is the average specific energy applied to the whole ensemble of particles. 4. Linear Grinding Model: The Linear Grinding Model equations (Ref. About in any of the BallSim spreadsheets) are applied to the whole ensemble of particles as well as the center particles using E and Ec, respectively, to calculate the resulting product size distributions. The edge product is then calculated by difference. In terms of Residence Time Distribution, a HPGR is assumed to behave as a nearly plug flow reactor. Data Input and Program Execution: The data required by the simulator must be defined in each corresponding unprotected white background cell - inside the red double-lined border - of the here attached Data_File worksheet. Gray background cells contain the results of the corresponding formulas there defined and are protected to avoid any accidental editing.
