HPE STOREONCE SYSTEM OVERVIEW
Björn Gierisch, WW Technical Marketing Engineering – Storage Solution16. September 2020
• StoreOnce is a stand-alone, disk-based data protection appliance that can be implemented as hardware or deployed as a software virtual storage appliance on VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V
• The key features of StoreOnce are deduplication, compression, encryption, remote replication, and direct application-managed integration
• Backup applications use StoreOnce backup systems as targets• The StoreOnce portfolio spans from entry to enterprise and can expand into the cloud with HPE
Cloud Bank Storage, tripling usable capacity

• StoreOnce VSA extends the StoreOnce family to enable cost-effective data protection for virtualized environments
• By deploying StoreOnce in a software-defined form factor, customers can increase flexibility and cut storage costs compared to deploying purpose-built appliances
• StoreOnce VSA is a virtual appliance that delivers fast, efficient, and scalable backup in Hybrid IT environments
• A virtual appliance increases deployment flexibility and reduces costs through improved use of storage resources, compute resources, rack space, and power
• VSA capacity licensable up to 500 TB. Scales in 1TB increments• StoreOnce VSA High Availability (HA)
• Non-FC StoreOnce VSAs HA supported by native vSphere HA• StoreOnce High Availability Manager Overview allows failover of StoreOnce VSAs

• Cloud Bank Storage enables StoreOnce to utilize public and private cloud services for long term retention and disaster recovery.• Combines the efficiency of StoreOnce deduplication with the cost benefits of cloud storage.
– Optimized to reduce cloud storage and access costs.• Single management point for copy control by utilizing the existing backup application• Supports public and private cloud service providers including AWS S3, Microsoft Azure and Scality.• Recover from the cloud to any StoreOnce Systems• Scalable up to 3x the capacity of the associated StoreOnce System

Catalyst, NAS or VTL?CHOOSING THE MOST APPROPRIATE SOLUTION
Backup Interface Key Features Best Used In Comments
NAS (CIFS / NFS) • Shares are easily configured and viewed by the operating system
• Environments preferring to use backup to disk
• Environments where lower licensing costs are required
• Ethernet environments not using Catalyst integrated ISVs
• NAS target is for backup – should NOT be used for random NAS file access
Virtual Tape • Uses virtual tape drives and virtual slots to emulate physical tape libraries
• Fibre Channel and iSCSI connectivity (model dependant)
• Enterprise FC SAN environment• Customers wanting to emulate
current physical tape environments
• Tried & tested, well understood but lacks sophistication
• Uses Robot and Drives device types
StoreOnce Catalyst • Backup application has total control over backup & copy / data lifecycle
• Network efficient backup / copy• Improved DR• HPE owned IP
• ROBO to DC backups• Network resource constrained
environments• Environments requiring a single
management console for all backup and replication activities
• Requires StoreOnce Catalyst license
• Requires backup application support
• Is the StoreOnce interface of choice
• Where possible, split a backup session into multiple backup streams. Allowing StoreOnce to process multiple backupstreams in parallel increases backup performance
• Do not delete backup items (StoreOnce Catalyst items, VT library cartridges, or files from NAS shares) directly from the StoreOnce Management Console. Instead, use the backup application to expire the backup items to ensure application consistency
• Do not enable backup application level compression, encryption, or deduplication. These processes will severely impact StoreOnce deduplication
• Housekeeping is an important process to maximize the deduplication efficiency of the appliance. Ensure that the housekeeping process has enough time to complete by not overloading the device
19
CONFIGURATION BEST PRACTICES - GENERAL
• Be sure the “Number of Devices per Login” is set appropriately for StoreOnce Catalyst Copy, Windows, Linux, HP-UX,AIX, and Solaris media and database servers.
• If running the backup application as a non-root or non-administrator, be sure that the correct access permissions have been set on the StoreOnce Catalyst over Fibre Channel client device files.
• Zone every backup/media server to a minimum of two Fibre Channel ports with at least two StoreOnce node Fibre Channel ports across different Fibre Channel cards, ideally across different SANs. Multiple connections allow for higher availability.
• Wherever possible, use low-bandwidth StoreOnce Catalyst for optimal backup performance and network usage.• When performing low-bandwidth StoreOnce Catalyst backups, spread the number of backup sessions
across multiplemedia servers to reduce the possibility of a media server becoming a performance bottleneck.
20
STOREONCE CATALYST OVER FIBRECHANNEL BEST PRACTICES
• VTL/NAS/Catalyst• Where possible send the same data
types to the same device configured on the StoreOnce system, to maximize deduplication ratios.
• Run multiple backups in parallel to improve aggregate throughput to a StoreOnce appliance
• To be able to reach an acceptable performance work with minimum two stores and split the number of reference streams per appliance equal to each store.
