Yota is one of the largest telecom providers in Russia, and a pioneer of providing 4G services in the country. Towards the end of 2011, the company piloted its first commercial LTE network in Novosibirsk, later rolled out to major cities across Russia.

The launch of 4G has made a significant impact on Yota’s backoffice systems. It resulted in a massive increase in data traffic, upload times and real-time processing requirements rising unified federal data warehouse, one capable of handling big data in real-time.

Objective Ensures fastest uploading, analysis and process scalability of large data, to keep in line with business growth

ApproachSpent two months reviewing available options from IBM Netezza, EMC Greenplum and HP Vertica

IT improvements• Provides real-time and long-term data analysis

for all business units and IT infrastructure

• Automates data processing resulting in fewer service interruptions

• Compresses data up to three times better than alternative options, saving disk space

Business benefits • Improves employee productivity due to faster

data uploads

• Delivers better analysis of real-time data to support staff, improving customer service

Yota Networks creates a unified federated data warehouse

“HP pays great attention to the co-operation with Yota Networks, one of the most innovative Russian telecom operators. I hope that the HP Vertica implementation will provide the company with the solutions to the most complex tasks, to improve the subscriber service quality.” —Andrey Kutukov, general manager, HP Software in Russia

System requirementsAs Yota Networks produced its requirements for its new database, the greatest attention was paid to data upload and processing speed. With data being collected continuously it would be necessary to upload simultaneously. The data warehouse could not stand idle. As a result, Yota considered only the MPP-based data warehouses.

In addition, the new data warehouse had to support gradual data volume increases without the necessity to purchase expensive new storage systems.

It needed to also provide business analytics data on a planned and ad-hoc basis. As a given, it had to be reliable and fault free, with automated basic processes allowing personnel to carry out maintenance, enhancement and task optimisation without external resources.

SolutionYota conducted a detailed, two month investigation of available options. This produced a short list of three: IBM Netezza, EMC Greenplum and HP Vertica, which pulled away at one stroke. All the three solutions were MPP-based but HP Vertica was the only next generation system focused on big data processing.

It was also distinguished by allowing the smooth extension of both performance and data volumes by adding new nodes to the cluster. Also, the process is fully automatic and doesn’t require any service interruptions. The system is by default highly efficient in various requests processing and it can be extended using further data structures without extra expenditures.

HP Vertica can also process partially compressed data which can lead to significant performance increases in certain search types. The HP data warehouse compresses data up to three times better than rival solutions, leading to considerable savings in disk space.

The system was deployed by one specialist with Yota managing the maintenance operations in the house. However the contract enables the company to access HP technical support at any time. The company claims the majority of users didn’t even notice the transition.

The other factor influencing the selection of HP Vertica was the room to create a testing zone without any additional costs. Preliminary testing started at the selection stage and test system was deployed on virtual platforms. The initial period included the data warehouse processing real data from LTE test networks and lasted approximately two months.

The transition to HP Vertica involved uploading new data types and connecting local offices. Thus, when Moscow LTE network was put into operation mode, the data was transferred to the new warehouse. Currently the unified federal data warehouse has the capacity of approximately 4 TB and takes in roughly 25 GB daily. Over 50 data tabulations (processing around 10 data types) and 10 reference books have been already been created. The IT systems from five departments have been integrated to conduct analytics.

Co-operation fruits and prospectsThe HP Vertica unified data warehouse has resulted in immediate improvements to network data uploading and processing rates. The company’s call centre has benefited from better, more accurate network and data, leading to improvements in customer service. For instance, Yota has a device to enable temporary increase of the connection speed at an extra charge, capacity allowing. The new system is able to estimate current network load based on the data delivered by the warehouse and to regulate the mechanism accordingly.

“HP pays great attention to the co-operation with Yota Networks, one of the most innovative Russian operators,” says Andrey Kutukov, general manager HP Software in Russia. “I hope that the HP Vertica implementation will provide the company with the solutions to the most complex tasks and improve the subscriber service quality.”
