Abstract: We propose that Hewlett-Packard provide Linux as a complement to Windows NT and HP-UXon the Merced platform. Linux is a fully featured Unix system that runs on many hardware platforms, including Intel, DEC Alpha, Sun SPARC and SGI MIPS, with one single source code base. Linux supports a vast array of commercial software and it offers multiple graphical user interfaces, including OSF/Motif with CDE and Windows95. Linux interoperates very well with other operating systems, including those from Apple, Microsoft and Novell. In 1996, its fifth year of existence, Linux was already selling more than half a million copies, which amount to almost 20% of the shipping volume of all Unix distributions combined. Its unofficial installed base is estimated to have grown far beyond ten million sites - this far exceeds any other operating system except, of course, DOS and Windows95. Today, Linux drives hardware that ranges from mission-critical embedded systems, such as experiments on-board the last few Space Shuttle missions, up to parallel supercomputers, such as Beowulf clusters, which are sponsored by the San Diego Supercomputer Center, among others. 8 Pages
