• Social Etiquette Rulings– Jim Crow Laws: Laws of Racial Segregation
• Plessey v. Ferguson– Segregation was legal (Separate but Equal)
• African American Leaders’ Reaction to Segregation–Booker T. Washington believed that blacks need
to upgrade their economic status.• This will help alleviate the racial segregation
–W.E. B. Du Bois & Ida B. Wells believed otherwise• They demanded an immediate stop in the
segregation
• Violence–African Americans and other who did not follow
racial etiquette were lynched
Discrimination in the North ( De Facto Segregation)
– As blacks moved to the North in search of social equality and better-paying jobs they found discrimination
– They had to live in segregated neighborhoods
– They were not hired by employers, except as a last resort
– They were not paid equal to the whites
– Competition between the working class whites & blacks ended up in race riots.
Discrimination in the West
• Discrimination against Mexican Workers:–Employed in the railroads, mining and
agriculture of the Southwest; they were paid less
–Debt Peonage was used to bind them to slavery
• Discrimination Against Chinese–Whites’ fear for job competition pushed Chinese
to the segregated schools and neighborhoods.
