Qualities of Good Pharagraph• A good paragraph always takes several tips for

success into consideration.• General guidelines:

A paragraph has to be:> United – focused on a single thing;> Coherent – easily understandable to a

reader;> Adequately developed;> Neatly structured.

• Our tips on writing a paragraph:Long paragraphs aren’t always of high

quality, and vice versa. The length of paragraph writing depends on how good a topic is unfolded.

The Example of Bad Pharagraph

I live in a house in west Provo. I like the view from our house. We have lived there since November. We also have a car that I like very much. We were in an accident a few months ago. We hit a deer that was crossing the street at night. I felt sorry for the deer, but it cost a lot of money to repair the car.

The Example of Good Pharagraph

My husband and I bought our first house last November, and we love it. It is located in west Provo near Utah Lake. Although we cannot see the lake from our house, we do have a beautiful view of Mount Timpanogos. Our house has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a family room, and a large kitchen and dining area. We also have a large backyard and a small garden. We are very happy to own our own home, and I hope that we will live there for several years.

Pharagraph Structure

A paragraph should have a logical structure that is easy to put into an outline:I. Topic SentenceII. Supporting DetailIII. Supporting DetailIV. Supporting DetailV. Concluding Sentence

SupportingSentences

Page 10: How to write a good pharagraph?

Topic Sentence

• A topic sentence is the sentence that tells the reader the main idea of the paragraph, and motivates the reader to want to read more.

• The topic sentence should contain only one main idea. It should be specific and detailed.

• The topic sentence is often found at the beginning of the paragraph, but it can be in other places, too.

• Our tips on writing a paragraph:Some journalists say that a good topic

sentence is made of five words. Five words are quite enough to state a problem.

Topic Sentenc

e

can’t be an incomplete sentence

can’t be a fact

can’t be a

questiontells the reader the subject of

the paragraph

has a topic and a

controlling idea

The topic is narrow

topic

implies a question that the paragraph

is going to answer

Page 12: How to write a good pharagraph?

The Topic is Narrow Topic

• The topic of topic sentence is not wide or too wide, and not too narrow.

• For the example, “marriage” and “Fullerton College” can’t be the topic of topic sentence, because the topics is too wide that would be impossible to write about these topics in ONE paragraph.

• The topics must be narrowed, so...

Page 13: How to write a good pharagraph?

The Topic is Narrow Topic

• marriage– teen marriage– cross-cultural marriage– age differences in marriage

• Fullerton College– Student services at FC– Fullerton College soccer team– Applying to FC

Page 14: How to write a good pharagraph?

The Example of Bad Topic Sentence

• Jenny went to the Grand Canyon this winter and to Mexico in the spring of 1994.

Page 15: How to write a good pharagraph?

Page 16: How to write a good pharagraph?

Supporting Sentences

• Every good paragraph should have 3 – 5 supporting ideas. Each supporting piece of evidence must be tied back explicitly to the thesis.

• These sentences give evidence.• Don’t assume your reader understands your

logic – lay it out for him or her.• Be brief and to the point – a supporting

argument shouldn’t take more than 2 – 3 sentences to explain.

Page 17: How to write a good pharagraph?

Supporting Sentences

• General guidelines:> Share an idea with your reader;> The more sentences you add to a

paragraph, the more your ideas are developed;

> move from general, abstract ideas to specific qualification of an idea.• Our tips on writing a paragraph:
