How to Use Twitter To
Educate Patients And Increase
Professional Visibility
Do You Tweet?
Social Media isn’t a fad; it’s a fundamental shift
in the way we communicate.
Are You On Facebook?
Mayo Clinic’s Philosophy of Social Media
“Mayo Clinic believes individuals have the right and responsibility to advocate for their own health, and that it is our responsibility to help them use social media tools to get the best information, connect with providers and with each other, and inspire healthy choices.”
Social media helps to reach people when, where and how
they want to receive health messages; it improves the
availability of content and may influence satisfaction and trust in
the health messages delivered.

• Promote your Twitter name on your
business cards, email, or website
• Live tweet from conferences and events
• Join Twitter chats
How To Take Part In A Tweet Chat
• Join the chat by searching for and clicking
on relevant # (e.g. #physiotalk)
• The chat will be hosted and the host will
ask questions along the way to stimulate
discussion and sharing of ideas
• You don’t have to tweet - you can just
follow the conversation, especially if you are
still getting used to tweet chats
• Introduce yourself, using the # and mention
that you’ll be there watching and listening
Live Tweeting
Benefits Of Live-Tweeting
• Twitter followers who cannot be at the event in person can follow along using the # hashtag
• Attendees who live-tweet a conference can deliver valuable insights to those who are unable to attend the event in person
• This in turn expands the reach of the conference
• This learning is further consolidated with an archive of tweets after the event
Some Live Tweeting Tips
• Tag your tweets with the designated conference hashtag
• Tweet links to websites, studies, or other information which will enhance understanding of the topic
• Share key quotes and statistics
• Attribute quotes to the speaker who made them, by using quotation marks (add their Twitter name if known)
