Quality of Dial ServiceDepends Upon Proper Use

Dial telephone service is easy to use. How-ever, the quality of that service depends to alarge degree on how the dial telephone is used.It is important that subscribers understand theproper method of dialing numbers.

The suggestions in this booklet will be ofassistance to you in using dial telephone service.Your cooperation will be appreciated.

New Des Moines Telephone Building at Ninthand High Streets

Dial telephone equipment in two new build-ings will serve present Market, Walnut andMaple subscribers and about 1800 subscribersin the southeast corner of the Drake centraloffice area. New long distance and informationswitchboards also are being placed in the down-town building. This building, in addition tohousing telephone equipment also contains theDes Moines local and district offices and theTelephone Company's headquarters for thestate of Iowa.

FirstRefer to the Directory

Refer to the latest issue of the TelephoneDirectory to obtain the correct telephone num-ber of the person you are calling.

When dial telephone service is in-troduced, changes in numbers of allDes Moines subscribers will be effec-tive. Beginning at that time, it isimportant that you use the new direc-tory which will be delivered shortlybefore the change to dial service ismade.

Remove the ReceiverCarefully

After obtaining the correct telephone numberfrom the directory, remove the receiver. Whiledoing so, avoid jiggling the hook for it is likelyto interfere with the completion of your call.

This is a portion of a column in the new Telephone Di-rectory being prepared for u*e starting at the time when dialservice is introduced. It illustrates how the new telephonenumbers will appear in the new directory.

Listen for the Dial Tone

The dial tone is a steady humming soundwhich can be heard in the receiver as soon asthe dial equipment is ready to handle your callGenerally it is heard as soon as the receiver isremoved. Do not start to dial before you hearthis tone.

If you are calling from a party line telephone,or an extension telephone, and you do not hearthe dial tone, inquire if the line is in use.

After hearing the dial tone, you are ready todial the number. Be sure to keep the receiveroff the hook while dialing.

First, place the forefinger firmly in the dialopening through which the figure "3" is seen.

Remove your finger and let the dial return toits normal position without forcing or retardingits movement.

To Complete Dialingthe Number

Proceed to dial each one of the figures"4-6-9-0" in the same manner as "3" wasdialed

The Ringing Signal

When you have completed dialing the numbercorrectly, and if the telephone you are calling isnot in use, you will hear a burring sound atintervals. This is the ringing signal and indi-cates that the called telephone is ringing. Ifno answer is received after hearing this signalrepeated for a reasonable length of time, hangup the receiver and call again later. Be sureto allow the called person sufficient time toanswer before hanging up.

The Busy Signal

If the line of the telephone you are calling isbusy, you will hear a buzz-buzz-buzz sound.This is the "busy signal." When you hear thissignal, hang up and call again later.

Caution

Do not move the dial or the receiver hook afteryou have dialed the number and are waiting forthe called person to answer or while you aretalking.

This may break your connection and inter-rupt your call.

When Through Talking,Replace the Receiver

When you have finished your conversation,replace the receiver on the hook. This releasesthe equipment in the central office and makesyour telephone available for another call.

If you wish to make a call immediately afteranother, allow the receiver to rest on the hooka few seconds.

Always listen for the dial tone before startingto dial. Dialing may be started as soon as thetone is heard.

In case someone on your line interferes withyour dialing before you hear the ringing signal,replace your receiver and call again. If youhave heard the ringing signal, it will not benecessary to dial the number again.

In Case of Error

While dialing, if you make a mistake or ifyour finger slips from the dial before it reachesthe finger stop, replace the receiver for a fewseconds, then remove it and listen for the dialtone. When it is heard, dial each figure of thenumber again.

How to Call the Other Subscriberon Your Party Line

If you are served over a party line, you willbe furnished the name and the address of theother subscriber on your line, together with aspecial telephone number. When you wish tocall the other person on your line, it will benecessary to dial the special number instead ofthe number listed in the directory.

After dialing the special number, replace yourreceiver. The bell on your telephone and thebell of the subscriber whom you are calling willthen ring intermittently unti l the called personanswers. When your bell stops ringing, it in-dicates that the subscriber called has answered.You may then remove the receiver and startyour conversation.

If your bell does not stop ringing after areasonable period it indicates that there is noone to answer at the called telephone. Youshould remove your receiver for a few secondsand then replace it. This will stop your bellfrom ringing and disconnect you from thecalled telephone.

If you do not have the special number of theperson on your line whom you wish to call,dial "OPERATOR" and explain the case to her.

To Make Emergency Calls

To report a fire, dial 4-3212To summon police, dial 3-4121

For your convenience, these numbers arelisted on the first page of the telephone directory.Also, they are listed on the outside back coverof this booklet.

The fastest service will be obtained by dialingthe fire or police number. However, in anemergency, if you do not know the number todial, you may dial "OPERATOR" or "0" (zero),and ask for the fire or police department.

I£ the figures on the dial cannot be seen, re-move the receiver, listen for the dial tone, thenplace the finger in the first dial opening belowthe finger stop, turn the dial completely aroundand release it. This is the same operation asdialing "OPERATOR" or "0" (zero) and itsummons a special operator. She will assistyou in obtaining the desired connection.

If you are making an emergency call from apublic or semi-public telephone, be sure that thedial tone is heard, then deposit a coin and dialthe number or dial 4'0" (zero) to secure the as-sistance of an operator.

To Secure the Assistanceof an Operator

If you need assistance in completing a call orif after several attempts you fail to completeyour call, dial "OPERATOR" or "0" (zero).

When the operator answers, explain the situa-tion to her and she will render all possible as-sistance.

To Call Out-of-Town Points

To make a long distance call, dial 110 andgive your call to the long distance operator.

To call a subscriber in Valley Junction, dial112 and give the operator who answers the num-ber you are calling.

See the information pages in the front part ofyour directory for additional information re-garding long distance calls.

To Call Information

To secure numbers of Des Moines telephonesubscribers not listed in the directory, dial 113and give the operator the name and address ofthe person you wish to call.

To Call Repair Service

If your telephone is out of order, dial 114. toreach Repair Service.

It may be necessary to use another telephoneto do this. If you use a telephone without adial, ask the operator for Repair Service.

To Make a CallFrom a Public Telephone

First, remove-the receiver and listen for thedial tone.

Second, when you hear the dial tone, deposita coin.

Third, after depositing the coin, dial the de-sired number. If no one answers the calledtelephone or if the line is busy, your coin will bereturned after you replace the receiver.

To Call the Telephone Company'sBusiness Office

If you desire information regarding applica-tions for service, changes in service, directorylistings or advertising, bills for service, or ifyou wish to discuss some unsatisfactory con-dition, dial 4-6161. This will connect you withthe Telephone Company's private branch ex-change. Then ask for the Business Office.

Incoming Calls

Incoming calls are answered over a dial tele-phone just like those over a telephone withouta dial.

When your telephone bell rings, answer aspromptly as possible by announcing your nameor number.

I f no response is obtained when you answer acall and the dial tone is heard, it indicates thatthere is no one connected with your line andthat any connection that may have been estab-lished has been released. In this case, hang upyour receiver.

The new Telephone Directory which will bedelivered just previous to the change to dialservice in Des Moines, wil l contain severalpages of helpful information on how to use yourtelephone service. When the suggestions madein those pages of information are followed, yourservice will be the most satisfactory.
