How to Use PowerPoint Effectively
Start With the Main Goal
• It is important to make sure that your students know what the objectives are for the presentation.
• In this particular presentation we will be reviewing basic tips for effectively using PowerPoint.
• The following topics will include appropriate formatting and slide presentation skills with reference to use in the classroom.
Use a big enough font
• Any less than a 24 point font size is too small to read recognizably.
• 28 or 32 point size is preferred for text and 38 to 44 point size for titles.
• If a small font size is used (such as for graphs), make sure the group is close enough to see the projection clearly.
Use Contrasting Colors
• In order to see the slides clearly, there must be enough contrast.
• Some people prefer to use a light background with darker text.
• You can also use a dark background with light text such as a blue background with white text.
Get to the Point
• Using short phrases and sentences are a great way to convey the main idea and get your point across.
• If the sentences become too long, it can be difficult to follow and can take away from the overall presentation.
Use Simple Transitions
• Too many different transitions will be distracting to your students and will take the attention away from the subject.
• Some transitions take a long amount of time to complete and can slow down the whole presentation.
Use Graphics Correctly
• Graphics can be a great eye-catcher or aid in demonstrating a point.
• Too many graphics used just to be showy distract from the teacher and the subject matter.
Keep it Easy to Read
• Using bold, italics, or underlining can be distracting if used too much.
• Keep the font size fairly uniform in each slide - huge font in the middle of a sentence cancels out the rest of the message.
• Keep the same font style for the whole slide.
Some Ideas for the Classroom
• Students can use PowerPoint to assist their oral reports. This can make it less stressful and go smoother for them.
• Teachers can use PowerPoint presentations to outline a plot, show steps of a math problem, or review material.
• PowerPoint is a great way to show videos or organize photos of class projects and trips
