Tutorial 2: How to Join LinkedIn Groups (Principles)

There are two parts to the “join” process:

1. Follow the LinkedIn protocol

for joining groups;

2. reassess each group

after joining to check its

usefulness as an

employment-promoting tool.

Tutorial 2: How to Join LinkedIn Groups

1. The LinkledIn protocol for joining a group (Principle)

It is very easy to use:

Just click on the “join” button located next to the group you wish to join:

Then wait till you are either accepted or rejected.

NB: Getting accepted may vary from instant acceptance (open groups) to days, weeks or even months before acceptance. Occasionally there will even be a rejection.

Tutorial 2: How to Join LinkedIn Groups

1. The LinkledIn protocol for joining a group (walk through)

a) Join the first group on your to-join list (in this example it should be the ‘Animation and Film Jobs’

group:

b) You MUST adjust your settings or you will be inundated with emails from the group.

As you will become a member of several groups this will quickly become extremely annoying and as it is not a necessary part of the benefits of belonging to the group can be easily avoided by adjusting settings from the beginning:

When you click the “join” button, you will get the following message:

b cont) Open groups will accept your join-request immediately. The instructional design professionals group, for example, is an open group

NB: You will need to adjust your settings for open groups as well - as recommended

2. Reassess each group after joining (principle), or using the “leave group” option:

A group may look great from the information provided in the group profile but it may turn out that it does not satisfy any of the three criterion we used for joining a group:

- Deliver professional/industry-relevant information

- Have members that demonstrate what a viable career path in your

field looks like

- Provide information about new job opportunities This is because, some groups have members who:

- engage in shameless self-promotion - engaged in trivia- spam the group (eg conference managers)- are not very active – last discussion was some months ago!- are international and so not relevant to your purpose of attracting notice from local recruiters

<<This will keep your groups relevant and worth participating in>>

If a group turns out to be not worth visiting – use the “Leave group” button which you can find by going to the group and selecting “your settings” in the “more” drop down box.

2. Reassess each group after joining or Using the “leave group” option (walk through)

For illustration purposes lets say that you decide that the “Instructional Design Professional Group” is not useful for enhancing your job prospects (ie: discussions show it is not the career for you).

a) Go to “your groups”, click on the unwanted group, then when on the group page, click on the “more” tab and select “your settings” from the drop down box

b) Scroll to the bottom of this page and click “leave group”. Then click “save changes” and you are done.

The group will then be removed from your list. (NB: “Games Professionals in Australia” is a example of a group with –sadly - little participation)
