HOW TO USE GOOGLEOR ANOTHER SEARCH ENGINE
Lisa Huelle, LMSDardanelle Middle School
To Google or not? First of all, you should try the Library
Databases that you can access while at school
Much of the research you will need at DMS can be found in those databases
Occasionally you need information that cannot be found on the databases, Google is a good search engine to use to look for that information
Why Google? Google is not the only
search engine out there – other common search engines are ask.com, Bing, and Yahoo
Google tends to be a good general search engine to use for educational purposes
Advanced Search Using Google Have students use the “Advanced
Search” on the right of search bar on the Google home page
Depending on what the student is searching for top two lines in the blue box of the advanced search need to be filled out carefully
The top line says “Find Results---with all these words”
The second line says “Find Results---with the exact phrase”
Advanced Search Continued
In the second line put the exact thing you are searching for (ex. Benjamin Franklin)
In first line then put the topics that will narrow down your search (ex. Inventions)
The information searching for will be more specific
Another important step is to go the Domain – searching for .edu or .gov will give students fewer and more reliable resources to use than resources that have a .com URL
Searching for one domain at a time seems to work better
Hit Enter to get results
More Google Search Tips A well done search on Google should
result in quality results – therefore students should not have to go to the second page to find information.
If a student does not find what they are looking for on the first page of results, they should do another advanced search using other keywords that would narrow down the results even further
Using Boolean terms – and, - or, and –not will also narrow down the search results.
Google is a business and usually the first two results on a page are sold to businesses, so do not use
