This tutorial will walk you through the steps necessary to upload a raster image to

MapStory from ESRI ArcGIS software.

Step 1: To begin, your raster needs to be in the projection WGS 1984. To find out whatprojection your data is currently in, left click on the file in ArcMap or ArcCatolog. Select

Properties when the menu appears. This will bring up all sorts of information about thefile. When the Properties window is open, select the Source tab. Scroll down and you

will see the spatial reference section, this is where you can see what projection your data

is in (see picture). If your data is already in WGS 84, skip to step six (6).

Step 2: If your data is not in this projection, open ArcCatolog. You will need to use

ArcToolbox (which is within ArcCatolog) for the next step. A quick way to find the tool

needed is to open the search window and search for the Project Raster tool. The searchwindow can be opened by going to the Windows tab at the top of the screen and

clicking Search. Once this is done the search box will appear on the left side of the

screen.

Step 3:Once you select the Project Raster tool, a separate window for the tool willappear. The first box is Input Raster this is where you will put your raster. When youplace the file in this box, ArcCatolog will detect its current projection and fill in the next

two (2) boxes for you (see picture)

Step 4: The input coordinate system of your raster will be different than the example, but

it does not matter what coordinate system is displayed, the important part is that it is

recognized by ArcCatolog. Now you must select an Output Coordinate System. When

you click the button to the right of the box a window will appear with various options. Itis important that you select the following buttons to find the WGS 1984 option:

Select>Geographic Coordinate Systems>World>WGS1984.prj

Once you have selected the proper projection you probably, but not always, have

to select a Geographic Transformation. This ensures that ArcCatolog successfullycompletes the reprojection process. The options for transformations will vary case to

case, but usually it is easy to find which one you want to use. Below is an example ofgoing from Maryland State Plane NAD 83 to WGS 1984

Step 5: Click OK and the process will begin. Depending on file size, it may take a few

seconds or a few minutes. There will be a blue progress indicator in the bottom right

corner of the screen. This will give percentage updates 3 times, after is runs through the

3rd

time an icon will appear in the same bottom right comer indicating that the process iscomplete. It will be a small box containing a green check mark with a hammer looking

symbol next to it. Your new reprojected raster will be automatically placed in the samefolder as your original file, unless you denote otherwise.

Step 6:Now that your raster is in the proper projection, its ready for upload to

MapStory. Before upload, however, a few steps need to be taken to ensure things workcorrectly. To do this open up Windows Explorer and find your reprojected file in

whatever folder the original was in. You will notice that instead of being one file as it

was in ArcGIS, it now appears to be 5 files. This is because Windows Explorer is not a

GIS oriented platform and therefore it displays the image differently. The screenshot

below is an example of what your file may look like in Windows Explorer.

Step 7: Now that you have identified he 5 parts of your file in Windows Explorer, it istime to create a zip file that can be uploaded to MapStory. It is VERY IMPORTANT

that this zip file contain all parts of your file, usually this number is 5 (such as the parts in

the image above) but sometimes it will only have 3 or 4 parts, which should not be anissue. If it does not contain all parts it will encounter an error during the upload process.

Step 8: After creating the zip file, go to MapStory.org and navigate to the Upload

StoryLayers page by clicking the icon on the home page.

Click the Browse button next to the layer data file box as seen in the picture.

The SLD box is for a different kind of format; dont worry about it for uploading most

rasters. Browse for the zip file you just created and click OK. The upload will beginonce you do this. This part may take several minutes depending on the size of the file.

When the upload completes you will be directed to a screen like the one below, whereyou can customize information about your newly created StoryLayer

Once you fill out this info your StoryLayer will be complete. Happy MapStoryTelling!
