How to tell when a relationship is over
(in 90 seconds) -Tony Roache
Holly Hosler-White
Mise-en sceneIn every scene of the film we see that the male character has the same style of costume, whether it be a short sleeved t-shirt of long sleeved, it always the same blue color. I feel this could be a highlighter of the man and woman's relationship, how its stuck in a routine. The color could also foreshadow the couples feeling, the note of blue usually implying that the character is ‘blue’ or ‘sad’, an emotion the male character feels at the end of the film.
Camera
The Same medium shot is used through out the film, in every scene we see. Implying, to me, that a setting can stay the same, but time can change the people in the setting. It also shows, again, how their life is in a routine and how this can effect a relationship.
Editing
The first shot we see in the film is a shot of the couple looking very happy, and laughing. The final shot we see is the man alone, these contrasting shots show how people can change in a space of time, and is also used to make an impact on the audience.
Sound
The diegetic sound of the clock in the last scene, I feel, shows the fact that time is the thing that made this relationship breakdown, and also re-enforces the fact that the film has completed what it set out to do tell us ‘How to tell when a relationship is over (in 90 seconds)’
In the same way, the music in some of the scenes is very much set in the rhythm of a clock, used as almost a count down of the 90 seconds set by the title.
