How to Survive a Car Accident

There is more to successfully surviving a car accident than simply walking away relatively 'unscathed.'

The soft tissue injuries received during a heavy auto collision can cause on-going health problems

resulting in long term discomfort and pain.

Injuries that are clearly visible are often the ones that cause the sufferer a great deal of stress and worry

about unsightly bruising, the possibility of permanent scarring or disability or the prospect of a lengthy

period away from work. However, internal damage to the neck, spine and surrounding soft tissue can be

infinitely more serious than surface scrapes and scratches.

Car Accident Side Effects can be Long Term- The injury caused by jolting and jarring to the spinal area

and the neck during a car accident, especially rear end collisions, need not necessarily cause discomfort

immediately or even appear on X-ray. These are injuries that present as slight stiffness at first, not

particularly painful and certainly nothing that would ring alarm bells.

Over time, these injuries could cause pain, abnormal curvature of the spine, misalignment and

eventually long term disfigurement or disability. Eventually, major surgical intervention is required to

correct posture and relieve pain but without any guarantee of a permanent fix.

All of this can be avoided by early consultation with a qualified chiropractor. A chiropractic consultation

can uncover injuries that evade X-ray and the well-meaning examinations carried out by general

practitioners.

A great number of car accident victims only suffer discomfort weeks or months after the incident and

believe their pain has no connection with their car accident. They fail to connect the two events simply

because the pain did not appear immediately following the auto accident. Soft tissue injury will often be

pain free in the early days but the injury at the source of the problem does not simply 'go away by itself.'

Do I get compensation for chiropractic consultation?

Compensation comes through insurance claim processing and therefore the decision to compensate for

treatment lays with the insurance company or companies involved. However, a report that will support

a claim for insurance is readily available and may be submitted along with X-rays and other relevant

information.

If there is no pain, how do I know I have an injury?

Good question! You don't! That is why it is imperative to see a chiropractor at the earliest possible

opportunity after a car accident. A timely check up with your chiropractor could save years of

discomfort, pain and eventual loss of mobility.

The spinal area in particular is vulnerable to impact injury. The diagnosis and treatment of this kind of

injury is a specialist area and although general practice will make every effort to attend a patient after a

car accident, soft tissue spinal and neck injury is often overlooked and allowed to worsen over time.
